A boat that was very likely headed for Ponto Landing with 24 illegal immigrants onboard tipped over in the surf at Torrey Pines State Beach early in the morning on Saturday, January 16, 2010, killing one man, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Sixteen passengers were rescued Saturday from the 58-degree water or found along the shoreline. The search continued until sundown for the remaining people believed to have fled. . . .“This is our worst nightmare,” said Lauren Mack, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “We’ve been warning about this dangerous activity, and unfortunately now we have our first fatality.”
While one man died it is believed that six or seven of the illegals escaped into freedom in the land of opportunity.
