Families Want Carlsbad Cancer Testing

by The Editors on June 16, 2010

KUSI sits with two Carlsbad parents who believe that there is a “cancer problem” in Carlsbad even though researchers say the statistics don’t show a “cancer cluster.” They say they want more tests.

There appears to be high numbers of cancer and other illnesses in the city of Carlsbad. Why is it so difficult for the city/county to test the air, water, and soil? The property taxes in Carlsbad are high enough to cover the tests.
The health of the people (especially) children should be a priority over anything else!

Concerned residents asked for and got a comprehensive study. It analyzed the number of cancer cases in Carlsbad residents for 1996-2008. In that time there was no indication of rates that were higher than expeccted, except for melanoma. The melanoma numbers wwere high, but similar to the rest of the region where residents spend a lot of time in the sun.

That’st the reason why the city and county shouldn’t test anything. How do you find a cause when there’s no porblem? A lot of people in Carlsbad have gotten cancer. A lot of people in Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Encinitas, Del Mar, etc. get cancer.

I know Carlsbad likes to think it’s special. This time, we’re just like everyone else. Accept it. Work to find a cure for cancer. Build a memorial to lost loved ones. Volunteer in a bereavement support group. Do something positive instead of dragging our city through more baseless fear.
