Carlsbadistan’s Pacific Ridge School celebrated the official opening of their new 32,500-square-foot high school building on August 31, 2010 and it seems like everyone was there.

. . . more than 800 students, parents, faculty, community members, and local constituents gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the school’s new 32,500-square-foot high school building. . . With global engagement and ethical responsibility as cornerstones of the Pacific Ridge School mission, the building was designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable. The green project design features passive air conditioning methods, passive light shelves, Crestron lighting controls, solar tube skylights, solar shading, roofing reflectance techniques, bioswales, and a number of other green building and site components.

Nothing but the best for Pacific Ridge. Maybe if we keep playing the lottery we’ll be able to send our kids here someday. But then we’ll just get dinged with four years at Stanford, Harvard, or Yale. Follow the jump for the official release.
Pacific Ridge School Opens Doors to Energy-Efficient High School Building

Carlsbad Non-Profit, Independent School Aims for LEED for Schools Gold Certification

CARLSBAD, Calif. – September 08, 2010 – Pacific Ridge School, a non-profit, independent college-preparatory school located in Carlsbad, Calif., is aiming to be one of the most energy-efficient and sustainable campuses in the country and recently got one step closer on its path towards LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for Schools Gold Certification. On August 31, 2010, more than 800 students, parents, faculty, community members, and local constituents gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the school’s new 32,500-square-foot high school building.

As a result of the design and features, the building energy performance is expected to achieve a 40 percent (40%) savings over a similar building designed to the California Energy Code. Potable water usage is estimated to be 30 percent (30%) less than that of a conventional code-compliant building. Utilizing City reclaimed water, installation of a synthetic turf soccer field and use of drought tolerant plant material is expected to reduce irrigation water consumption by 50 percent (50%) below conventional irrigation measures.

With school enrollment two years ahead of the original plan, the first phase of the independent school’s expansion plan included purchase of the adjacent property (completed April 2009), a new synthetic athletic field (dedicated January 2010) and now, a permanent, energy-efficient high school building to accommodate up to 360 ninth through twelfth graders. The class of 2011 will be the first to graduate from the new high school building, featuring 19 classrooms in a semi-circular harkness setting, four state-of-the-art science labs, two reading lounges, a college counseling area, teacher and administration offices and a new athletic field. The total cost of Phase 1 is $20 million, of which the school has already raised two-thirds from Trustees, foundations, parents, and other school supporters. The school expansion is the result of the collaboration of architecture firm Carrier Johnson; land use planning, fiscal and environmental services firm Hofman Planning Associates; Swinerton Builders; and construction manager Downey Associates.
