Great job, Carlsbad! Now we have another “mayor for life” Matt Hall, who will probably be mayor until he is ready for assisted living. And Carlsbad won’t ever vote out an incumbent, so it’ll be business as usual, more golf course boondoggles and now Aquatic or Skate complex. Open space will continue to disappear, since $300K is waaaaaay too much to pay for a parcel of land, when you pay millions for a kluge of a golf course! Carlsbad has still never spent ONE CENT on open space — so much for the Proposition we voted for way back when. Yes, congrats Carlsbadistanians……maybe someday people will get a clue. At least Keith is still a city council member and if he runs again, I will support him again!
Sorry, that was NO aquatic or skate complex.
Packard? Really? What was Carlsbad thinking? This guy is a lump! Does the “Packard” name really mean that much to you guys, I guess so. “Ocean Watcher” has it right…no Alga Norte, no Skatepark complex, no open space, and no fun! Seriously considering a move after this disaster of a turn. The stranglehold continues!
VERY SAD that Wantz didn’t get the votes…. He was the new breed of city council that Cbad could really use!
I think we as citizens should use Carlsbadistan and the North County Times letter section as a forum to pepper city hall with projects we support and believe the new administration should push through. Here’s my list:
1) Alga Norte–get this on the council agenda ASAP and this time VOTE TO AUTHORIZE CONSTRUCTION/SEEK BIDS. Enough delays–let’s build it!
2) Skate complex–council resolution supporting this wonderful proposal and asking staff to look into ways to clear up the maintenance yard to get the proverbial wheels in motion.
3) Open space–buy something, anything!
4) NRG–continue the good fight against a power plant not just on our precious coast, but anywhere in our city. We don’t need it, we don’t want it.
5) Plan a council field trip to The Grove in Hollywood, or even to Vista Village, to see what Westfield Plaza could, and should, become.
6) Run through the city and identify and fix problem intersections, such as Chestnut at El Camino, where we desperately need a left-turn lane from Chestnut, especially heading east.
7) Assemble a citizens task force to once and for all develop a plan THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED for the village, with a timetable. Elements should address parking, uniform street signs ala the Gaslamp Quarter, etc. Robin Young should get a medal for livening things up with such projects as the Farmers Market and Halloween on Elm, but she needs city intervention, help and, perhaps most of all, ears.
Thanks for the plug TK. But to be fair, Halloween on Elm was a terrific “intervention” by the City and was a great success that I hope proved that the Village is a viable center for activity in the City of Carlsbad. The program was the result of teamwork of several city departments, CEF, Boys and Girls’ Clubs of Carlsbad, New Village Arts and the Carlsbad Village Association. (I hope I didn’t leave anyone out)
While the Carlsbad Village Association can take credit for the Farmers’ Market, Art in the Village, Holidays in the Village, Thursdays on the Coast Art Walk, an upcoming Girls’ Night Out Program, Carlsbad Yard, Museum of Skateboarding & Action Art Center (if it gets approved), The Grand Promenade project and assisting in creating an viable arts community in the Village. We would be dishonest to take credit for Halloween on Elm.
Partnership is key to success in any endeavor. The more people can look to the future with a similar vision (and timelines) the more likely there will be success. In the nearly four years that I have been with the CVA, I have seen a tremendous change in the amount of partnership that has taken place amongst the various groups that operate in the City.
There is still much that needs to be done and City support in helping us bring more activity and festivity to the Village year-round is a goal we are working toward. My hope is that the new council will see the value of our organization and begin to support it in a way that most cities support their Downtown or Mainstreet Organizations.

I agree 100%.
