Carlsbadistan’s Marie Callender’s Closes

by The Editors on December 13, 2010

On the Monday after Thanksgiving the Carlsbadistan Marie Callender’s apparently closed up shop and packed away the signs according to a story in the San Diego Reader.

Next door at the McDonalds, employees said the Marie Callender’s signs were removed right away on that morning. The restaurant obviously did not tell its regular customers. Two hand-written notes were posted on the front door December 8 advising groups that normally meet at the restaurant to go to other nearby establishments for their meetings.

The restaurant, which was shut down by for a few days in November of 2009 after a Thanksgiving day diner smelled sewage in the kitchen, has had a rough time lately. Wish we could say we were going to miss them.

The regular food may not have been very good, but the Kahlua Cream Cheese pie was one of my favorite things on Earth. I’m going to miss having that in Carlsbad.

This location should have a new Richie’s Real American Diner like the one in Rancho Coccamonga Victoria Gardens or the New Proto-type Regernerated Sizzler like the successful one in Murrieta California. It is worth the visit to see how this concept is adding value to thousands of patrons and making Sizzler the most wanted concept going forward. Has what Carlsbad needs. These two concepts would do well at this location.

YIPPPEEEEEE !!!! Another complacent, (SAGA institution) food supply restaurant BITES THE DUST. that food was so bland and gross I am amazed that it stayed open as long as it did. The BAR is what kept it thriving with it being a OL’ Carlsbad hangout with the 60 crowd. Anything you put next to the 5 with all that “Tourist generating” activities (legoland, flowerfields, shopping etc.) will do well. BUT it will be another peripheral MALL restaurant chain that will set up shop. my guess= BBQ place…Lucille’s or one of those joints. we don’t have BBQ in that area. So a Restaurant chain giant like LANDRY”S INC. will put one of their vast array of restaurants there. Just more homogenizing of the eating possibilities in america. Salt it up and gobble it down..let’s hope Claimjumper is next. BUT we (america) need a SUPERSIZE option in that area and with the touristic clientele, Claim jumper has done fine. I stopped going there the moment the pulled the salad bar. How about A “BONEHEADS”? great restaurant up in OC el toro) very healthy and Mesquite grilled oriented. and very economical !!! Or a “ONO-ONO” ( in OC, Tustin) which is awesome hawaiian/japanese fusion food. a step above Teri- Cafe. Just please No cookie cutter super chain restaurants. BUT that’s not how business works these days. PLEASE, Just not another pizza brewery or italian .

Going back to the days when Don Calendar developed the concept—which was a trend setter in every way—the concept has been sold & re-sold multiple times—each time
to groups that put bottom line before customer satisfication, quality, cleanness & team
work—-which is a formula for failure.

Carlsbad community has some great restaurants and needs to add a viable, upcoming
concept that “pleases people”‘ for breakfast – lunch – dinner —BBQ & smoked
premium steaks. Do your self a favor & check out Richie’s Diner in Murrieta, Temecula or Rancho Cucumango—you’ll say “this is what we need in Carlsbad”.
