Scenes like this will be a thing of the past this summer thanks to the Carlsbadistan City Council. Tonight (March 8, 2011) they approved new parking regulations for the west side of Carlsbad Boulevard that will see the end of the summer motorhomeless invasion and we can’t thank them enough.

The new parking restriction prohibits “oversized vehicles” from parking on the west side of Carlsbad Boulevard, between Redwood and Cherry avenues, between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The new ordinance applies to vehicles that exceed any one of the following three criteria:
7-foot height, including any object fixed to the vehicle’s roof;
7-foot width, including any accessory attached to the sides, but excluding mirrors;
22-foot length, including any attached accessory.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Our prayers have been answered. Follow the jump for all the details.Summer parking restrictions approved for oversized vehicles
Recreational vehicles and other oversized vehicles will no longer be allowed to park on Carlsbad Boulevard near downtown during the summer, based on a new ordinance introduced at Tuesday’s Carlsbad City Council meeting.

Residents have for years complained that the large vehicles arrive early and stay all day, monopolizing prime parking spaces along busy Carlsbad Boulevard and blocking ocean views. There have also been complaints about RV owners spreading out and blocking the sidewalk, a busy location for walkers and joggers.

The City Council has explored many options to limit the parking of such large vehicles on the coast highway and, on June 15, 2010, directed staff to develop an ordinance that would limit oversized vehicles during the busy summer months just on this stretch of the boulevard.

Carlsbad Police Lt. Marc Reno said the Police Department wanted the restrictions to be clearly understandable.

“From a law-enforcement standpoint, we wanted to make it clear to the public what they could do, and make sure the law was enforceable,” Reno said.

The new limits do not apply to vehicles parked south of Tamarack avenue on Carlsbad Boulevard, another popular spot.

The new restrictions do not alter other parking time limits on Carlsbad Boulevard. Vehicles are prohibited from parking between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., or between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. daily, depending on location. Those restrictions remain in effect.

So, so glad to see this. Really, it should be year-round, and on all streets in Carlsbad. I am so fed up with people parking their RVs on the streets in my neighborhood, moving them a couple of feet every 72 hours so as to avoid being ticketed/towed. The idea is that you’re not supposed to be using the public streets as either a) your home and/or b) your storage facility for your RV.

This was a great idea but didn’t go far enough. It covers about what, 2 blocks? They will just move south of Tamarack and down to Ponto. Like Jimbob said, they need to ban them everywhere in Carlsbad. Just take a trip down Avenida Encinas between Palomar Airport Rd. and Pointsettia. It looks like temporary housing and RV storage, it does nothing for our city.

Old skater and Jimbob are right. But at least it is a start. Cardiff is also ridiculous in the summer between restaurant row and Solana Beach – a total wall. Really, the state needs to address the issue up and down the coast…and I say this as an owner of a 38′ Holiday Rambler.
