Two male Oriental fruit flies (Bactrocera dorsalis) have been spotted in Carlsbad, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
In Carlsbad, state agriculture workers will begin eradicating the Oriental fruit fly Friday within a 8.7-square-mile area of where the flies were trapped, using pesticide-laced food for the insect; people are urged to not move fruits and vegetables out of the area.
But that’s not the biggest news. The larger issue is that 1,181-square miles of San Diego County has been “placed under quarantine for the Asian citrus psyllid” a.k.a. Diaphorina citri.

The biggest challenge facing Carlsbad’s leaders in the near future will be to agree on spending priorities without the safety net of an ample reserve fund.
The city’s yearly budget surpluses may soon disappear because of the planned opening of new city facilities and a reduction in new development as the city reaches build-out.
Enter the Carlsbad Six, City Council candidates ranging in age from 19 to 74.
Their campaign Web sites suggest they can be divided into three groups: the Insiders, the Outsiders, and the Long Shots.

Carslbadistan pro surfer Taylor Knox gave it a charge at Trestles in the Boost Mobile Pro, the continental US’s biggest surf event. He made it past Timmy Reyes this morning, but in his next heat against current world champion Mick Fanning he got stuck waveless for the last half of the heat.
Sadly, he is now out of the contest along with Carlsbad’s Ben Bourgeois who was knocked out by Bobby Martinez in heat number five of round three.

A Vista Firefighter who saw a surfboard “sticking up in the water” around 5PM tonight rescued a surfer who was apparently knocked out according to a story on Sign On San Diego.

The surfer was revived before being transported from Canon Park at 6 PM by San Diego’s copter 1 to a hospital.

This afternoon a man in his “30s or 40s” apparently tried to throw himself under a Coaster train at the Carlsbad Village Station at approximately 3:40 PM on September 9, 2008, according to a story on Sign On San Diego.
It was an attempted suicide, it appears from witness accounts,” said Carlsbad Police Cpl. Rob Shelton. . . .“He contorted his body and he threw himself at the train,” said Chris Wood, who was standing on the platform about 100 feet away.
Firefighters were able to get him out from under the train and transport him to Scripps Memorial Hospital. This is the same location where Jeffrey Samora, 24, killed himself by jumping in front of an Amtrak train on Monday April 21, 2008.

For the first time in 13 year the American’s have won the girls’ junior U.S. Open Championships. And that’s all thanks to Carlsbadistan’s Coco Vandeweghe winning over Venezuela’s Gabriela Paz 7-6 (3), 6-1, according to the New York Times.
After a competitive first set, Vandeweghe took control almost immediately in the second, breaking Paz in her first service game to take a 2-0 lead. After holding serve, Paz then double-faulted to give Vandeweghe a second break and a 4-1 lead. Vandeweghe was never in danger from there and went on to break Paz a third time to win the match on a sizzling forehand winner down the line.
She’s the first to ever win it as a wildcard entrant and the word is Coco is just beginning to hit her tennis stride. Congrats, Coco.

Carlsbadistan’s satellite products company ViaSat Inc. has just signed a $50 million deal to “intall land-based ‘gateways’ to connect European broadband subscribers to the Internet via satellite.”
The contract was awarded by Skylogic, a subsidiary of Eutelsat Communications of Paris. ViaSat will install 10 broadband gateways in Europe linked to the KA-SAT satellite, which is scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2010.. . . “This is the first network infrastructure award resulting from our transformational broadband initiative and leverages ground system economies of scale because it can be used for both high-capacity satellites — KA-SAT and ViaSat-1,” said Mark Dankberg, chairman and chief executive officer of ViaSat.
Yeah, what Mark said. We’re hoping someone got a nice fat bonus for this one.
