Property owners in the Old Carlsbad area (a.k.a The Barrio) are getting together Thursday August 23, 2007 at 7 PM to discuss being included in Carlsbad Village redevelopment plans according to the North County Times. The meeting will take place at Father Raymond Moore Hall at 3256 Madison Street.

A Cleveland-based private jet service Flight Options LLC recently released a list of the top 10 favorite places their rich-ass customers like to fly (via private jet) and Carlsbad sneaked onto the list in ninth place behind Nantucket, Napa, Scottsdale and others. Here’s how they described us:
With seven miles of accessible beach, championship golf, world-class spas and the kid-friendly appeal of Legoland, Carlsbad is a classic Southern California destination for families and couples alike.
Then again, Las Vegas was number one on the Flight Options list so obviously these jet fliers have their priorities completely backwards.

Back in the middle of July we mentioned how a group of Lego fanatics were going to build the world’s tallest Lego tower during the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Canada and steal the current world record (94.3 feet tall) from Carlsbad, California. Though they tried all weekend, they were unable to build a Guinness World Book of Records tower thanks to heavy winds. . . Phew!
Pray for more wind in Toronto. We’ll keep you posted.

In the battle of the sports trading card giants it appears that Carlsbad’s Upper Deck has decided to terminate its tender offer for all outstanding share of Topps Co., Inc. . .
and added that the action of Topps made conditions precedent to the tender offer incapable of being satisfied. Further, Upper Deck said that all shares of Topps previously tendered and not withdrawn under the tender offer would be returned promptly in accordance with the terms of the tender offer.
Let’s just say that Upper Deck is not happy with the Topps board right now. And the deal is off.

When a man driving a Saab tried to elude police on a high speed chase down I-5 by exiting the freeway at Cannon road, he ended up slamming into the back of a Mercedes-Benz, which collided with a truck in front of it.
The Mercedes was pushed into the back of a truck which briefly caught fire. At least two other vehicles also collided after the chain-reaction crash, the CHP said.
The woman driving the Mercedes was taken to the hospital and the two children in the back seat were uninjured. The man driving the Saab was reported unhappy about his arrest:
He was shot with a Taser gun and was taken by helicopter to the hospital.
Every time a Saab driver gets Tasered we smile a little.

It couldn’t happen to a better company. Time Warner Cable has been operating it’s business in the City of Carlsbad for the past nine months with out a valid local franchise agreement. As much as we hate the idea of only having one choice when it comes to cable, it is good to know that the City is standing up for itself against the media giant.
The suit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in San Diego, is the latest step in a months long battle between Carlsbad officials and Time Warner over the franchise agreement, which allows Time Warner to use city rights of way to run its cable lines. The city contends Time Warner’s franchise contract expired Nov. 19 and has attempted to get the company to sign a new contract with higher franchise fees.
Then again, according to the North County Times as of January 1 the Public Utilities Commission handles franchise contracts for the entire state and Time Warner may not even need one.

The four-year-old boy who was found at the bottom of a pool by La Costa Spa and Resort guests has died six days after he was taken to Children’s Hospital.
Brennan Bostani of Los Angeles was pronounced dead at Rady Children’s Hospital last night, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office. . . Brennan is survived by his parents, Aileen and Arman Bostani.
Our thoughts are with the entire Bostani family.

After publishing reports of motorboaters’ rampant disregard for the “passive use/no motorboats” area on Carlsbad’s Agua Hedionda Lagoon we decided we should check it out for ourselves.
The buoys are back up (there are five of them). And, after watching for approximately 15 minutes on Saturday August 18, 2007 we found that the majority of the boaters were respectful of the buoys. We did however see one boat that seemed to be ignoring the no fly zone all together. Click the video below to see more:

Carlsbad’s Village Improvement Program is looking for board members.
The board will consist of nine members representing various groups. Among the categories are property owners, residents and retail business owners, as well as a representative each from the Carlsbad Village Business Association, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and the Carlsbad Convention and Visitors Bureau.

In classic old-school point-counter-point fashion the North County Times has paired two people up to answer the burning question: Is Carlsbad’s $68 million golf course a good investment? The pair is made up of sports editor Loren Nelson and staff writer Marc Figueroa. Would you believe the sports editor is in favor of the course? It is Figueroa, however, who makes the best point in the entire debate:
So when the city of Carlsbad trotted out its shiny, new $68 million track earlier this month, I couldn’t help but scratch my head. Why invest that much money in something that only a small percentage of people are going to use?
