After a Gold medal in the X Games Vert Skateboarding, Carlsbadistan’s extreme sports wünderkinder Shaun White rolled up to Portland, Oregon for the Vans Invitational stop of the AST Dew Tour and won his third Dew Tour event of the season.
I was just watching everyone else and, after my first run, I just focused and landed it,” said White, from Carlsbad, Calif. “I didn’t want to pull another X Games and wait to the last minute.”
Even after we warned everyone about the DUI trap, there were still six people who drove right into the Carlsbad Police Department’scheckpoint Friday night August 17 on Palomar Airport Road at El Camino and were arrested for driving under the influence (not too bad considering they checked 2000 cars). Police also nabbed two on felonies. If you see someone swerving around, call the police.
A new multiple-agency program is asking people with cell phones to be vigilant, look for swerving cars and other tell-tale signs of impaired motorists — then to call 9-1-1 when they spot a drunk driver, said Lynn Diamond of the Carlsbad Police Department.
Then again, The San Diego Police would rather you not dial 911 unless it is more serious.
Sgt. Kerry Tom, Watch Commander of the San Diego Police Department said that, although the idea is a good one, “people should steer away from using the 9-1-1 system unless it’s a life-threatening emergency.”
Apparently, drunk driving isn’t that big a deal downtown. . .
Last night, while strolling the Carlsbad Seawall at sunset, we crossed paths with an attractive woman in her fifties, sporting jogging clothes and headphones. She was singing along in the way people do when the volume on their iPod is a little too high. As she high-stepped past us, these were the words she was singing:
. . . and I lost my libido to a hysterectomy, yeah. . .
Now that’s a country song we’ve never heard before. . . nor are we all that interested in hearing it again. But the sunset? It was beautiful.

It’s not called the “land of Gold” for nothing. Terramar’s oceanfront street Tierra Del Oro is experiencing a large construction build out. In fact, of the streets 12 beach-front houses, two have been torn down (one has been rebuilt), another is scheduled for demolition, and a lot that has been empty for years is finally getting built out.
With a hard-driving soundtrack and many quick camera transitions, this year’s 28-minute video offered many shots of the city’s much celebrated golf course, which opened earlier this month. Located on a 400-acre, hilly site along Palomar Airport Road, the course is known for its elegant clubhouse structure and its costly construction price tag. It took more than a dozen years to get to opening day, and city officials estimate the project cost more than $60 million.
Those who missed the live presentation can catch the video in a public showing Monday evening August 20 at 7 p.m. Monday at the Ruby Schulman Auditorium of just watching on on Time Warner Cable’s channel 19 Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 PM where it will run until mid-November.
The Carlsbad Police Department is setting up a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint on Palomar Airport Rd east of El Camino Real today. So, if you’re planning on dining at restaurant row and your license isn’t exactly up-to-date you might want to figure out an alternative route home. Then again, if driving drunk is one of your problems, we’re guessing you’re not the kind of person who plans ahead, which is great. Drive right into the check-point and get arrested. We don’t need you on the streets.
After a short two-gig stop in the heart of CarlsbadistanTGIF Jazz in the Park is wading back into the suburbs and the cool, breezy beauty of Calavera Hills Park at 2997 Glasgow Drive with the hard-driving blues craftsmanship of the Bill Magee Blues Band. A review on Bill’s website sums it up pretty well.
For those few of you who haven’t had a Bill Magee experience, don’t hesitate to get out there and see this band! This group delivers some of the finest blues you’ll ever hear and it was enough to get music fans of all ages dancing and air guitaring.
We’ve also heard rumors that back in the day Bill (known as Willie then) used to play with a guitarist named Jimmy James. . . Purple Haze indeed. The show starts at 6 PM. Bring a picnic dinner and your dancin’ shoes.
Tonight enjoy the mellow warm sounds of the Hawaiian Islands in an authentic Irish pub as Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub and Grill (where Tamarack meets The 5) presents The Cheap Leis featuring former pro skater Adrian Demain, San Diego music and action sports industry icon O (the power pop genius behind the bands Olivelawn, Fluf, and Reeve Oliver), and a couple other hitters you may recognize.
There is no reason to miss this show. If you haven’t seen the Cheap Leis, watch this clip and you’ll get a little idea of what will be going down tonight. And, if you’re lucky you’ll get to hear their cover of The Misfits “I Turned Into A Martian” sung as “I Turned Into a Tahitian.”
Grab your low back chair, warm clothes, a flashlight, and blanket and enjoy some nostalgic entertainment outside under the evening stars. Movie starts promptly at sunset, with a showing of the Cisco Kid before the main feature.
Admission is free and hot dogs, chips, popcorn, cotton candy, and sodas can be purchased at the Barn Theater. The next four Fridays will feature the following films: Mister Antonio, Guilty Generation, If You Could Only Cook, and I Promise to Pay.
