In an active community it is a complete shame that our shuffleboard courts at McGee Park (the only public shuffleboard courts in Carlsbadistan) are being torn down this week so Hi-Noon Rotarycan move their “historic” gazebo to a spot even more popular with homeless people than Rotary Park.
A North County Times article explains exactly how the shuffleboard destruction is going down:
The city is supplying the electrical wiring and lighting for the structure, and assisting in converting the existing shuffleboard court to concrete walkways and turf, where additional tables and chairs will be placed during events.
Please note the words “converting the existing shuffleboard court to concrete walkways and turf.” The City of Carlsbad is actually destroying another action sports facility so people will have a place to sit in the shade? Seriously? Guess us shuffleboard players will go underground. Hopefully street shuffleboard is still legal in Carlsbadistan. . . We might have to buy one of their “custom pavers” just in protest.
Hyatt Hotels Corp. representatives insist that guests at the 329-room resort will notice no difference after the Aviara becomes a Park Hyatt, which is the Hyatt chain’s upscale, contemporary brand. All signage will be changed during the first two days of the changeover, they said. . . “We are thrilled to be managing one of California’s most beautiful resorts,” Chuck Floyd, Hyatt’s chief operating officer for North America, said in a news release. “Park Hyatt Aviara Resort will be a wonderful addition to our luxury Park Hyatt portfolio and Hyatt Resort properties worldwide.”
It will take a while to get things straightened out. A Google search for “Aviara Resort” still returns a list of links to the Four Season’s webpage which “regrets to inform you that the resort is no longer managed by Four Season Resorts and Hotels” but does not offer a link to the new site. It does, however, offer links to other Four Season’s properties. We’re sure the Park Hyatt Aviara wil eventually begin showing up properly.
We have more questions, but we’ll have more info after we give the new Hyatt a test run.

Yes, we tried it. It was fun. We didn’t even get wet. It was a lot like canoeing standing up. Or, like hiking on water. . . [click to continue…]

Commuters who begin their day at the Carlsbadistan Coaster Station with a copy of the soft-porn tabloid California Gentlemen are going to have to get their kicks elsewhere after NCT officials pulled the publication from station racks, according to a story in the North County Times.
Southern California Gentlemen, which features young women clad in bikini bottoms and little else, plus sex tips and a listing of the region’s strip clubs, sold for $1 this week inside a locked green dispenser on the station’s train platform. . . Its front, shown through a clear plastic dispenser cover, featured a busty young brunette called “Big Boobs Vanessa.”
Can’t say we’re going to miss Vanessa, but we’re guessing there will be some who do.

A man and woman wearing black sweatshirts, blue jeans and masks used a semi-automatic pistol to rob the Holiday Inn on Palomar Airport Rd at approximately 11:30 PM Monday, June 7, 2010 according to a story in the North County Times.
A desk clerk called police about 11:30 p.m. Monday to report that the duo had just robbed the Palomar Airport Road business, Carlsbad police Sgt. Chris Boyd said. The clerk told investigators that the robbers demanded cash, then ordered her onto the floor while they fled, Boyd said.
Freeway close businesses seems to get the brunt of these robberies lately. Luckily, no one was hurt.
A 20-year-old Carlsbad man who apparently could be “suicidal” was reported missing Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2010, according to a story on the San Diego News Network.
Thomas Mar Quine, 20, was reported missing around 3 p.m. Saturday, Lt. Paul Mendes said. Quine is described as Asian, 5-feet-10 and 135 pounds, wearing a gray sweatshirt, a black shirt with white print, black shorts and sandals. . . He was carrying a case containing a ukulele, Mendes said. Police searched until dark on Saturday and resumed around 6 a.m. today, and a helicopter joined the hunt after morning clouds burned off, according to the lieutenant.
If you heard the helicopter, that’s what it was.
[Update June 6, 2010 North County Times: Thomas was found safe sitting in a canyon about a mile east of the search area and was returned home by police.]
A 60-year-old Carlsbad man may have broken his neck today, Sarturday, June 5, 2010, after diving from his board in shallow water, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
[The man] may have fractured his neck when he hit his head on the ocean bottom, Oceanside Police Lt. Mike Goldsmith said. . . . Another surfer saw the surfer floating in the water and dragged the man to the surfline, where lifeguards began resuscitating the man with CPR. . . The man was taken by air ambulance to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends.
