On Saturday, September 28, 2013 the City of Carlsbad is going out to Lake Calavera and groom our mountain bike trails for us as a way of celebrating National Public Lands Day and we’d all like your help.
Volunteers will assist in planting approximately 300 native plants in a one-acre restoration site and help with other trail work. City staff will be on hand to assist with the activities and to provide information on trail maintenance and restoration. Those who attend will also learn about the boardwalk trails being built this winter and can hike any of the six miles of trails within the preserve. . . “Every day is a good day to celebrate the extensive 46 miles of trails available to the Carlsbad community,” says Liz Ketabian, City of Carlsbad park planning manager. “But once a year in September, the city welcomes the opportunity to join with other communities nationwide in a special day of volunteer activities focused on appreciating public lands throughout the country.”

On Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 9 AM to Noon the City of Carlsbad, in cooperation with I Love A Clean San Diego and International Coastal Cleanup Day will be participating in the 29th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day and they need your help.
Cleanup volunteers not only pick up trash, they also collect data on types of trash and debris found. This data is used to educate the public, businesses, industries and government on pollution prevention. . . Volunteers are encouraged to sign up at www.cleanupday.org. Click on the map to select the city-sponsored cleanup site at Tamarack Beach or any of the other registered sites. A volunteer waiver form is available on the website or at the event. All volunteers are required to sign the waiver, and participants under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

What to know where the City of Carlsbadistan stand on the city and the people that make up the community? Apparently, “Carlsbad is on its way to becoming a world class city.” Here is an official overview from Mayor Matt Hall.
Carlsbad’s last public skateboard park had some issues from the very beginning. While fun to roll, it never has had much flow and some of the sections were just plain wrong. Thankfully, that won’t be the case with the new Alga Norte Skatepark thanks to the involvement of former pro skateboarder Kanten Russell, according to a story in the U-T San Deigo.
Earlier this week, Russell walked the construction site at one of his projects, a 25,000 square-foot facility being built as part of Alga Norte Community Park in Carlsbad. It’s scheduled to open in September, he said. . . Carlsbad is where the first modern skatepark went up in 1976 — it no longer exists — and Russell sees the new one as paying homage to that history while making its own mark as a “crown jewel.” . . “I’ve done public meetings all across the country to talk about various projects, and every time I show anybody a picture of this park they say, ‘Where is this again and when will it open?’ They will definitely be flying in for this.”
We haven’t been out to check it out in a while, but once they start pouring the walls things go pretty fast. Meaning, it could be a great skate summer at Alga Norte, finally. Seems like it’s taken forever, doesn’t it?
The City of Carlsbadistan will be celebrating Arbor Day (April 27, 2013) by doing some work in the Calavera Hills Community Park.
Contribute to the community and the environment: help plant trees, restore irrigation basins and pick up litter. Get information on trees maintenance from Davey Tree Experts, West Coast Arborists and SDG&E’s Vegetation Management Department. . . Displays and booths will be set up near the lower parking lot. Volunteer registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Complete a volunteer application in advance and bring to the registration table.
The City has all the tools, however, if you’ve got the soft hands of a poet (or a blogger) then please feel free to bring your own work gloves. Work begins at 8:30 AM and finished at 10:30 AM Saturday, April 27, 2013. Calavera Hills Community Park is located at 2997 Glasgow Drive in Carlsbad.
The City of Carlsbad has officially named current interim City Manager John W. Coates as the next City Manager.
“John has the vision, style and experience we need to help Carlsbad continue on our path to becoming a truly world class organization,” said Mayor Matt Hall. “His collaborative approach to leadership and commitment to working with the community make him a great fit for Carlsbad.”

At its annual retreat last Tuesday Carlsbad’s City Council decided to forego listening to the usual parade of reports from department heads. They engaged, instead, in a creative visioning exercise, imagining the year was 2025 and Time magazine planned to do a cover story on the city. Council members were to suggest headlines and teasers for the story.
One headline declared the city “An oasis of prosperity, quality of life, and innovation.” Among the teasers were, “How a small city is raising its future workforce in its own world class university” and “Recession proof your city a la Carlsbad.”

For the next four months the Carlsbad City Library will host free business workshops at the libraries Gowland Meeting Room at 1775 Dove Lane. Topics will cover Building Business on Facebook, Link Up on LinkedIn, Steps to Starting a Business, and Doing Business in Carlsbad.
Now that we mention it, we’re realizing it might not be a bad idea for us to attend a couple of these. As we’ve mentioned many times before, but we hate it when people park their RVs out on the street for days, weeks, and months on end. We dislike it even more when they park them, live in them, and then repeatedly relieve themselves in nearby foliage. It’s ugly and the stink of urine and feces is both noxious and unsanitary.
Luckily, after years of complaints, the City of Carlsbad is attempting to do something to regulate these miscreant interlopers. They’ve created a draft city ordinance to outline when, where, and for how long RVs can be parked on our streets and they’d like you to read it over and comment on it. Granted, few things in life are more boring than reading city ordinances, but if you care either way on this issue (yes, that includes those who would like to continue planting their hulking, aluminum sided rigs anywhere they like) please read the ordinance and respond.
A draft of the ordinance is available on the city website and at the Transportation Department, 1635 Faraday Ave., Carlsbad, CA 92008. Members of the public interested in providing feedback about the ordinance are asked to put comments in writing and send via email to transportation@carlsbadca.gov or to the address above.
