Epic Wake Boats Go Electric

by The Editors on March 18, 2009

Carlsbadistan wake boat builder Epic has launched a new plug-in electric hybrid wake boat that reportedly cuts carbon emissions by 50%.

The 22-foot craft is expected to bring its hybrid equivalent of 375 horses to the water sometime in July. The price tag could be as much as $150,000 dollars for this specialized boat though the company foresees being able to produce a $70,000 version by 2012. We can only wonder if some of the plug-in hybrid technology used here will also find its way into into the Aptera 2h.

And it makes sense, Epic CEO Chris Anthony is also the co-founder of Aptera.

Carlsbad Woman Helps Sea Lion Pup

by The Editors on March 5, 2009

Sealion T350.JpgCarlsbadistan resident Barbara Henkel was sitting in her car sipping coffee with a friend at about 10:15 PM on February 3, 2009 when she saw something strange moving through the Chevy’s Restaurant parking lot in Del Mar, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Walking toward us was this seal. It was just a surreal moment,” she said. She called 911 while her friend followed the sea lion to prevent him from getting hit by a car. At one point, the yearling scurried and hid under a patrol car. Police said he appeared to have minor injuries and was trembling. . . .“We couldn’t get our heads around how he possibly traveled that far,” Henkel said.

This was the second time the pup had made a run for it. Last month he was picked up in Solana Beach, according to the paper. He is apparently back at SeaWorld for his second rehab. Come to think of it, maybe he just wants to be a performer in one of their dancing animal shows.

Latino Water Coalition Endorses Carlsbad Desal

by The Editors on February 26, 2009

410Px-Paul Rodriguez Uso.JpgApparently, Latino’s need water, too, and they want it to come from a desalination plant on Carlsbadistan’s Agua Hedionda Lagoon, according to a press release issued today by Poseidon Resources.

On December 23, fourteen members of the CLWC joined Poseidon for an informational briefing and tour of the desalination pilot plant in Carlsbad. . . . “Water is a critical and defining issue for all Californians. Poseidon Resources’ desalination plant is one of the life support systems that California is going to need in order for us to meet the needs of the future,” said Paul Rodriguez. “Our state is going to need these plants and I’m proud to announce that the California Latino Water Coalition has endorsed the Carlsbad Desalination Project.”

Leave it to a comedian from LA to tell us what’s best for our lagoon. How funny is that?

Desalination Plant Trudges Ahead

by The Editors on February 13, 2009

Poseidon Resources seems to be moving ahead like the Frankenstein monster over everything that gets in the way of it’s plans for a desalination plant in our lagoon. Most recently the San Diego Regional Water Quality board gave the company two months to “wrap up conditions of its permit” according to as story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The board’s executive director, John Robertus, said developer Poseidon Resources had addressed some of the agency’s concerns before Wednesday’s meeting, and the two sides would resolve a list of outstanding issues by the board’s meeting on April 8. . . . The board gave Poseidon a permit in 2006 to discharge effluent from its plant into the ocean, but required a plan to offset fish and other marine life deaths caused by the desalination process. . . . Under a “Marine Life Mitigation Plan,” Poseidon would restore 55 acres of wetlands as nurseries for marine organisms and plants.

We still don’t like it.

Surfrider Challenges Desalination Permit

by The Editors on January 27, 2009

The Surfrider Foundation, fresh off defeating the Trestles Toll Road, continues to battle the proposed Poseidon Resources Inc. desalination plant on our Agua Hedionda Lagoon, according to a post on their blog.

The contentious plan to build a massive ocean desalination on the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, California has been challenged in court. Surfrider Foundation, as lead plaintiff, claims approval by the Coastal Commission to build the largest ocean desalination facility in the western hemisphere violates California law because it was not designed or located to avoid the unnecessary destruction of marine life.

We fully support and back the Surfrider Foundation in this mission.

City Council To Vote On Powerplant Resolution

by The Editors on January 26, 2009

Jpeg-1The City of Carlsbad City Council is getting more and more serious about its opposition to NRG’s proposed second power plant. They’re even planning to vote on something:

The Carlsbad City Council will vote on a resolution finding that the second power plant proposed by NRG, called the Carlsbad Energy Center Project violates key city laws, regulations and plans at the regularly scheduled council meeting Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the council chambers, 1200 Carlsbad Village Dr. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Sadly, the city has no control over whether the plant gets approved or not, but it’s nice to see them going down with a fight. Follow the jump for the rest of the release. [click to continue…]

Matt Hall Pleads With Encinitas Over Plant

by The Editors on January 17, 2009

Jpeg-1Carlsbadistan City Councilman Matt Hall took the anti-powerplant message to the Encinitas City Council this week pleading with Encinitas to join Carlsbad in opposing the new NRG Power plant that is set to belch 900,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas into the air of North County, according to a story in the San Diego Reader.

Obviously, tourism is a big concern for us, as it is for everyone on the coast. I can’t express enough what a landmark this is going to become. When you drive down the road, you’re going to be 65 feet away from these big iron structures. You’ll be able to tell people, ‘When you see the big iron structure, it’s three ramps south and to the right to get to [your] hotel.’ This whole region has a buy in on what we do with our coastline.”

We can’t agree more.

Aptera Hits The Road In October

by The Editors on January 8, 2009

Aptera Profile-300X120In a letter to Aptera car fans, Carlsbadistan’s only car company has apologized for not getting cars out on schedule and promises to have them rolling by October 2009, according to a story on the blog Gas2.org:

Our most recent corporate commitment was that we would deliver the first production Typ-1, now known as the 2e, by the close of 2008. Despite our well-intentioned efforts, we were unable to complete that vehicle before the close of the year, so it’s now slated for January 16. However, unlike prior plans, this vehicle will not be delivered to a retail customer. We will continue our builds but at a much slower rate starting with a small test fleet of the enhanced vehicles, then moving to our volume production launch on October 1, 2009.”

The all-electric cars will be priced in the “mid $20k to $40k” range depending on options. We can hardly wait.
