Carlsbad Girls To Flaunt It For Cash

by The Editors on January 6, 2008

Misscourt SmallThere’s nothing better for the old men of Carlsbad than a beauty pageant. And we can all thank the Carlsbad Lions Club for keeping the tradition of scantily clad, pretty young things rolling with the 54th Annual Miss and Teen Carlsbad Scholarship Pageant.

With $3000 in educational funding as it’s ruse, the event will be held at 6 p.m. March 22 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center, 3557 Lancer Way. All single girls, ages 13 to 26, and residing in Carlsbad are eligible.

An orientation will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Harding Community Center, 3096 Harding St., and rehearsals will begin Feb. 5. Entry deadline is Feb. 19. Miss and Teen winners will receive cash scholarships of $2,000 and $1,000 respectively, and many other prizes.

Sadly, there is no “swimwear” or “talent” competition. Just “sportswear” and “evening gown.” But don’t get bummed. We’re sure the girls will be doing their best to look hot for the judges.

Carlsbad’s First Elected Mayor Dies

by The Editors on January 3, 2008

The North County Times is reporting that: “William Currier Atkinson Jr., the first elected mayor of Carlsbad, died peacefully in his Vista home on New Year’s Day, according to his wife, Charlotte.” Mayor Bud Lewis remembers Atkinson was also President of the Army and Navy Academy:

“Bill was the first elected mayor,” Lewis said Wednesday, “but I remember him more for his dedication to the Army (and) Navy Academy, where he dedicated his life to the school and did what I thought was a great job for them.”

Atkinson was 76. Our thoughts are with the entire Atkinson family.

Gallons of Poop Spilled Into Lagoon

by The Editors on January 1, 2008

A sewer line that was blocked by tree roots caused 350-gallons of sewage to bust out through a manhole on Hoover street.

Signs warning of sewage-contaminated water will remain posted at the boat dock and recreational area near Snug Harbor/Cal Watersports until sample results indicate the ocean waters are safe.

But we’re pretty sure 350 gallons of poo won’t stop any wakeboarders. They are just that committed.

Carlsbadistan To Escondido By Rail

by The Editors on December 24, 2007

News-Train280With the recent completion of the $477 million Sprinter light rail line from Oceanside to Escondido it will be possible for Carlsbadistan residents to get to Escondido (and Cal State San Marcos) by train, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

But not everyone is happy. Former Vista Councilman Dick Cooke didn’t like the cost.

I think it’s far too expensive,” former Vista Councilman Dick Cooke said. “They could have built two more lanes on the (state Route) 78, which would have been completed by now.”

Cooke is a prime example of the kind of twisted logic that continues to cripple mass transit in the United States.

Luckily, Carlsbad City Councilwoman Julie Nygaard is on the NCTD board and on the program. She was one of those behind getting a 1.7 mile California State University San Marcos loop so students could ride the train to school. The Sprinter is scheduled to open to the public on Sunday January 13.

Power Plant Hearing Draws A Crowd

by The Editors on December 18, 2007

According to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune the hearing and site tour that we mentioned on Sunday was a hit with Carlsbadistan residents.

A standing-room only crowd of more than 200 people turned out at a public hearing Monday night to comment on a proposal to replace the 53-year-old Encina Power Station with a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly electricity-generating plant. . . . Carlsbad resident Ted Viola referred to the 95-acre site owned by NRG Energy as “a profit center” and said he was concerned there is no absolute requirement for the company to retire and dismantle the Encina Power Station and its towering 400-foot smokestack.

While we think the smoke stack is the icon of Carlsbadistan, it’s obvious that NRG should be restricted in how many power plants it builds and be held to a plan regarding the old plant if they are allowed to build a new one.

The $7 Million Parking Structure

by The Editors on December 17, 2007

A new parking structure that the City of Carlsbad says we need will cost nearly $31,000 per parking spot if city estimates are correct. The 200 to 250-space parking structure could cost a total of $6 or 7 million, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.

There are two questions now facing Carlsbad officials: The first is whether to raise the in-lieu parking fee Carlsbad charges developers in the downtown in order to add more money to the parking structure fund. The second is whether to go for a shared parking structure project with the North County Transit District, which owns the downtown Coaster train station, officials said.

We’re no experts, but a shared parking structure seems like the best idea, and it would be even better if most of it was underground. Can they do that for us?

Agua Hedionda Industrial Zone

by The Editors on December 16, 2007

IndustrialWhat is supposed to be Carlsbad’s “natural lagoon” is quickly turning into an crowded industrial zone.

Let’s see: there is the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute fish hatchery, and the Carlsbad Aqua Farm oyster business. Then Poseidon Resources Inc. got Coastal Commission approval to put in a desalination plant and now NGR Engery is hoping to put in a second power plant over by Interstate 5 with two smaller stacks and a wall that runs down the side of the freeway, but they wouldn’t decommission the old plant for “five or six years” according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The California Energy Commission, which decides on major power plants in the state, will hold an informational tour of the site tomorrow [Monday December 17, 2007 at 3:15 PM] followed by a public hearing [at 5 PM at the City of Carlsbad – Faraday Center, Conference Room 173B, 1635 Faraday Avenue]

At this point it’s like why not just throw in a nuclear reactor and a ship dismantling plant while we’re at it? We’re sure it would mean increased revenue for the city. Please leave your thoughts in the comment section.

101 Bandit Suspect Caught in NorCal

by The Editors on December 13, 2007

A man police suspect of being the 101 bandit who they believe is responsible for at least one Carlsbad bank robbery on November 15 and 15 others since July may have been caught near Marysville, California yesterday.

Arthur Cheney, 64, of Napa was arrested at 4:20 p.m. after a California Highway Patrol officer saw him driving on Highway 70 in a 2002 Mercedes CL 500 with a paper license plate, CHP Sgt. Scott Klocker. A car matching that description has been linked to bank robberies from Palm Desert to the Bay Area, including San Jose and Palo Alto.

Apparently, when the CHP pulled him over and searched the car they found a “sticky note” with a handwritten message: ‘Robbery – 100s and 50s only.’ Officer Klocker joked, “We call that a clue.”

Rock ‘n Roll Founder Ike Turner Dies

by The Editors on December 12, 2007

RocketAccording to a story in the North County Times Ike Turner died today at 11:38 AM in his San Marcos home. He was 76 years old.

A groundbreaking guitarist, pianist and bandleader who helped pioneer both early rock ‘n’ roll and modern rhythm and blues, Turner’s reputation was tarnished by his drug addiction, stint in prison and allegations on film and in print that he abused Tina Turner, his famous former wife.

We know he lived in San Marcos, but we used to see his Benz (with personalized plates) around town so much that we’ve made Ike Turner an honorary Carlsbadistanian and we’re sad to see the musical genius go. He will be missed.
