Looks like six kids at the Calavera Hills Middle School have come down with the chicken pox and officials have warned parents that their kids may have been exposed.
“We are working closely with school officials to identify children who may have been exposed,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer. “Parents should check with their physicians to make sure their children are inoculated against chicken pox and other preventable diseases,” she said.
It’s that itchy, scratchy, red-blotchy, high fever time of year. Hopefully, your kids have been vaccinated.

The owner of Legoland would like to create a separate attraction at the park centered around an aquarium the size of the “the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla,” according to plans filed with the city of Carlsbad.
The aquarium will be called the Sea Life Center and will be a separate attraction – with its own admission price – from the rest of the 128-acre Legoland amusement park. . . . Building plans for the aquarium indicate it is intended to be a two-story structure. The first floor is slated to include a freshwater stream, a children’s maze, a harbor animals area, a theater, a toddler water play zone and a classroom.
According to Legoland spokeswoman Julie Estrada The Sea Life Center will also house “a restaurant, a sea horse display area, a ray tank, and nature discovery area.” The city, of course, “expects to issue building permits within the next several weeks” because, well, that’s what the city’s planning department does.

If you were out walking the Carlsbad seawall this afternoon and saw the Coast Guard helicopter, cutter, and a U.S. Navy hovercraft from Camp Pendleton searching the ocean between Off Shore and the Oceanside Pier it was because they were looking for a personal water craft rider thought to be a male under 20 who disappeared after crashing head on into another personal water craft, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.
An Oceanside resident on his lunch break was also surfing nearby and paddled over to investigate what appeared to be a swimmer in distress. . . . He said the victim was “grayish-blue,” but he was able to talk. . . . “The guy said he ran into his brother,” said the surfer, who declined to give his name. . . . The surfer towed the injured man to shore.
Neither rider was wearing a life jacket, as required by law. The victim who was brought to shore was “hospitalized with head and neck injuries, said Oceanside lifeguard Capt. Bill Curtis.”
Most of the intense rescue effort was suspended by nightfall, with no sign of the missing young man, believed to be under 20 years old. . . .Helicopters were expected to continue the search into the night, when they can use infrared cameras to sense heat on the surface of the water.

If you were at the beach today around 12:30 PM and tried to cross Coast Highway (like we did) you probably noticed that traffic was backed up all over the place. Turns out an injury roll-over wreck on I-5 South at Palomar Airport Rd. had the freeway temporarily shut down.
The crash was reported at 12:22 p.m. on the southbound I-5, near Palomar Airport Road, said Sgt. Tom Greenstone of the California Highway Patrol. . . Greenstone said Nelly Duran, 29, of Los Angeles, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe southbound on the freeway at about 70 miles per hour when she failed to notice slower traffic ahead. . . . The Tahoe rear-ended a 2007 Volkswagen driven by Felece Vertrees, 45, of Carlsbad, and then overturned, Greenstone said. One person was ejected from the Tahoe, he said.
Apparently five people were injured including two pre-school age children.

Linda Ann Davis of Oceanside, California has a problem. Her car just doesn’t look like it used to. Ever since it’s been “parked” on the corner of Harding and Chestnut it just hasn’t been treated right. On September 28, 2007 the City of Carlsbad Code Enforcement department reminded her that her precious Nissan Pulsar is a nuisance:
. . . you are hereby notified that the undersigned has determined that said vehicle (or parts of a vehicle) exists as an abondoned, wrecked, dismantled or inoperable vehicle at off of 3390 Harding Street, and constitues a public nuisance pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 10.52 of the Carlsbad Municipal Code.
Apparently, Ms. Davis has 10 days to respond to this letter or the car will be towed “at no cost” to her. By our count that means it should be gone by Tuesday. We don’t think she will be driving this away any time soon.

It’s going to get a whole lot easier for people from Vista to invade Carlsbadistan as Faraday Avenue finally opens to through traffic today after a “grand opening ceremony” at 11 AM, according to the North County Times.
The long-awaited, $16 million road extension will give drivers a straight shot from the western edge of Vista city limits at Melrose Drive to Orion Way in Carlsbad. It will provide a direct east-west connection between the two cities’ business parks. . . “It’s a big deal for the North County transit system,” Carlsbad Mayor Bud Lewis said Thursday.
While City officials seem ecstatic with this transit development to us it’s just one more bridge over the moat that for years offered us protection from Vista. Guess the only good thing is that Faraday doesn’t really connect to the beach. When Cannon opens all the way to Vista, then we’ll really be in trouble.

A 16-year-old girl (who was not wearing a helmet) fell from her skateboard at about 3 PM October 3 “near the intersection of Buena Vista Way and Highland Drive,” according to the North County Times.
The girl hit her head and according to a witness, suffered a seizure, Capt. Skip Clark said. . . She didn’t remember (what happened), she was kind of confused,” and suffered injuries, he said. The girl was taken by medical helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla for treatment, Clark said.
Be careful out there. . . concrete and asphalt are really hard.

Carlsbad-based real estate developer Russell “Rusty” Grosse, who was “instrumental in creating the YMCA Aquatic Park in Carlsbad and who has hosted (with his wife Bebe) the annual Magical Evening fundraiser for the Women’s Resource Center for 27 years is being inducted into the Oceanside High School Hall of Fame this year at a ceremony on October 20, 2007.
. . . a 1953 graduate and an inductee in business, [Grosse] practiced law in Oceanside before founding Foursquare Properties Inc., a company that has developed large housing, retail, industrial and office projects throughout the western United States, including several in Oceanside.
We’re usually not big fans of developers, however, Rusty is one of the most personable, kind, generous guys in the business and Carlsbadistan should be proud. . . even if Oceanside is giving him the award.

Police chased a BMW through Carlsbadistan last night at speeds up to 70 MPH until the driver (Patrick Jackson of Pauma Valley) hit a parked car on Juniper Avenue. And just as the driver jumped from the car to run away he was mowed down by an on coming Carlsbad Police car.
Officers tried to pull over the driver on Grand Avenue about 9:20 p.m. for several traffic violations, Carlsbad police Sgt. Keith Blackburn said. The driver allegedly sped off at 70 mph, struck a parked car and stopped on Juniper Avenue. . . The driver, 33, from Pauma Valley, was treated at a hospital for a broken leg, then booked into jail on suspicion of drunken driving, hit-and-run, evading police and a parole hold.
We saw the flashing lights while driving by and didn’t investigate more thoroughly. For that we apologize.

According to a story in the North County Times James Shannon, 61, died early morning October 1, 2007 when the limousine he was driving on northbound Interstate 805 toward Sorrento Valley Road crashed at about 3:11 AM.
The vehicle, which was traveling at an unknown speed, drifted for an unknown reason and sideswiped the steel guard rail, authorities said. . . . The vehicle then overturned, throwing the man out and causing fatal injuries, highway patrol officer Larry Landeros said. The limousine landed on its wheels and about 100 feet of the guard rail was damaged.
