The Women Behind The 2016 Taste of Bressi

by The Editors on March 10, 2016

Two Locals Help Kids

Sharone Story and Brisha Cordella (pictured above) found themselves faced with a challenge. As members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s board of directors, each were tasked to raise money to support the Club’s impactful youth programming. What they came up with was an event called The 2016 Taste of Bressi.

The 2016 Taste of Bressi will be held on March 19, 2016 from 2-6 pm at the Club’s Bressi Ranch location. “Holding the event at the Clubhouse gives the public a chance to see the facilities available to Carlsbad’s kids. Each guest receives a ‘Clubhouse Pass’ to explore, play games like foosball and ping pong, and enjoy live music while sipping on adult beverages, and nibbling delicious bites,” said Story. “It’s a fun, casual, light-hearted afternoon that everyone 21 and older can enjoy.”

Cori Schumacher worked tirelessly to help defeat Measure A and now has announced that she would like to continue her involvement in the future of the city of Carlsbad, California by running for a spot on the Carlsbad City Council. She announced her intentions March 6, 2016 and wrote about it here on Facebook:

Yesterday, at a gathering of folks celebrating the monumental and historic achievement of the defeat of Measure A, I announced my intention to run for City Council this November. The possibility of pursuing a proactive role working hard for social and environmental justice and the common good in Carlsbad intimately aligns with the core of who I am and is a natural extension of the nearly 16 years I have spent as a social and environmental justice activist. I want to work for this community in the most efficacious and substantive way that I am able.

Next Measure A Result Update Tomorrow

by The Editors on February 24, 2016

carlsbad-no-signs

While the vote tally currently looks good for those hoping to defeat Carlsbad, California’s Measure A (the “no” vote is currently in the lead by 186 votes), the election is far from over. The County of San Diego Registrar of Voters says the next update to the election results will be Thursday, February 25, 2016 sometime before 5 PM.

This count will include approximately 4,100 mail ballots. The registrar is also in the process of reviewing about 3,000 “provisional” ballots, ballots that need additional verification before they can be counted. Those results are not expected until at least Friday, and possibly not until Monday, according to the registrar’s office.

In the yesterday’s election “provisional ballots” made up about 7.4 percent of the total. According to the PEW Charitable Trust, in the 2012 General Election 8.1 percent of California’s cast ballots were “provisional” so it seems like Carlsbad’s number is pretty much normal for an election in our state. It’s those late mail-in ballots that could get interesting.

The preliminary results for today’s special election in Carlsbad’s Measure A, the Agua Hedionda lagoon shopping mall, will be reported by the County of San Diego Registrar of Voters, beginning just after 8 p.m., this evening (February 23, 2016). Click here to view that report (www.sdvote.com.) The results will include early voting at the registrar’s office and all the mail ballots received up until Election Day.

The Registrar of Voters will provide updates on its website as the count continues. The count is considered unofficial until the registrar certifies the election results. The registrar has 30 days to complete the count and certify the election results, however since the ballot only has one item, it could be done sooner. Once certified by the Registrar of Voters, the election results must be certified by the Carlsbad City Council at its next regular City Council meeting.

If you love Carlsbad please take the time and go to one of theses local polling locations and Vote NO on Measure A. That is the only way to get your voice heard.

Don’t Get Phished This Holiday Season

by The Editors on December 9, 2015

santa_hackPhishing scams are a persistent problem for consumers. The Verizon 2015 Data Breach Investigations Report revealed that at least one in 10 people fall for phishing attempts. Seems we all know someone who has turned over their info to the wrong person.

During the holiday season, inboxes everywhere are flooded with e-cards and messages from relatives, friends and well-wishers. Unfortunately, some of these emails may include nefarious software.

Craig Young, security researcher for cyber security company Tripwire (www.tripwire.com) is offering practical advice to protect consumers from cybercriminals. Please consider publishing these or discussing them with Craig.

“Around the holidays, a very common ploy for cyber criminals is to send fake e-greeting cards with malicious files attached,” said Craig Young, security researcher at Tripwire. “It’s easy for busy, distracted consumers to become victims of these schemes, but armed with a few basic security practices, they can drastically reduce their chances of being victimized.”

For five tips that Young recommends you take this holiday seasons, please follow the jump.
