Carlsbad Couple’s Exit Strategy

by The Editors on January 2, 2009

The older we get the less bummed we are by news like this story about Warren Mingus, 88, and his wife from the San Diego Union-Tribune.

An elderly couple were found shot dead in their La Costa home Thursday in what appears to the county’s second murder-suicide case reported on the first day of 2009. . . . When police entered the house on Cannas Court, a short street less than half a mile from the intersection of Aviara Parkway and El Camino Real, just before 5 p.m., they found the bodies of an 88-year-old man and a 90-year-old woman, who had apparently died from bullet wounds, Carlsbad police said. . . An acquaintance of the pair told officers they were both in failing health and were suffering from numerous medical issues.

We just hope this is something they planned together. Our thoughts are with their families.

Carlsbadistan’s Super Secret Police Check Point

by The Editors on January 1, 2009

Barricade TapeTomorrow night (January 2, 2008) Carlsbadistan’s finest will be holding a top secret sobriety check point on PCH just south of Tamarack, according to a press release in the North County Times. The spot is great because with water on both sides of the road there really is no way to escape.

People driving with open containers, registration problems, broken windshields, no front license plate, or bongs that take up half the front seat are discouraged from driving the coast between Cannon and Tamarack on Saturday night. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

A-Rod Better Watch His Back . . .

by The Editors on December 26, 2008

Xmas Walla 008

This Oceanside escapee was on the Carlsbadistan seawall this morning scaring up funds to pay for his wedding to Madonna (and to buy dog food). After they are married he will play Madonna some of his songs and, with the diva’s help, spread the word about the farce that is the Federal Reserve.

Either that or he needs beer money. . . apparently, this is how far a degree from USC can take you.

A Break In The Christmas Rain

by The Editors on December 25, 2008

Xmas Wall 004

During the break in the rain (and after opening presents) we snuck out and checked the surf. It was stormy. But the sky was blue. . . for a moment or two.

Carlsbadistan Has The Hanta

by The Editors on December 23, 2008

One mouse trapped in Carlsbad has tested positive for hantavirus, according to a story in the North County Times.

The virus, carried by wild rodents, can spread to humans in the form of a rare and potentially fatal illness, county health officials said. So far this year, 11 mice trapped around the county have tested positive for hantavirus. Routine tests usually confirm between two and eight cases a year, officials said.

We sincerely hope that Santa doesn’t catch the hanta.

Victoria’s Secret Manager Working Overtime

by The Editors on December 22, 2008

VictoriasecThe manager of the Victoria Secret store in Carlsbadistan’s Plaza Camino Real doesn’t seem to care about the rules as long as she gets her job done. Police were called when she refused to leave the business at 2:46 AM on December 20, 2008 claiming she had “some paperwork to do.”

According to the Carlsbad police log: A mall worker reported that “she is not allowed to work past midnight without a work order, which she did not have.”

She eventually left. Can someone give this dedicated employee a raise? Or at least a holiday bonus.

Hoehn Prop. 8 Protest Makes USA Today

by The Editors on December 22, 2008

Blacklistx-LargeLast March we mentioned that Robert Hoehn, the co-owner of Carlsbad’s Hoehn Motors donated $25,000 in support of banning gay marriage (Prop. 8). Recently, his business has been picketed and he’s not happy about it, according to a story in USA Today.

I just hate being pigeonholed as a hate monger or bigot,” says Robert Hoehn, who contributed $25,000 to the campaign for Prop 8, which amended California’s Constitution to exclude same-sex marriage. “I have friends in the gay community, and I don’t think any of them would say that. . . . Hoehn has seen protesters outside his Carlsbad, Calif., car dealerships, his name and business have appeared on websites publicizing donors, and he has received “the most vitriolic kinds of e-mails, letters and phone calls.”

Guess Mr. Hoehn is experiencing some of the costs associated with supporting legislation that denies the personal rights of others.
