A downed, live power line forced Carlsbadistan Police and Fire to close Magnolia Ave. at Pio Pico and one block east this morning before 8, according to the Carlsbad Fire Department.
“The line is still live so we’re keeping the street closed until the utility company can get here.”
This put a cramp in many students’ morning commute, but should be cleared up sometime this morning. Special thanks to a Carlsbadistan new tipster for alerting us to this breaking story.
A semi truck hauling shop towels caught fire on Interstate 5 just north of La Costa Avenue in Carlsbadistan on Tuesday morning at 4:30 AM causing traffic to back up for miles.
The incident was further complicated when the big rig began to spill fluid, which officials feared would leak into a nearby lagoon. A hazardous-materials team was sent out, as were officials from the Department of Environmental Quality. Sixty gallons of diesel fuel spilled, some of it possibly making its way into Bataquitos Lagoon.
When a house on Alyssum Road in Carlsbad went up in flames on Sunday, October 20, 2008, firefighters were surprised to find 40 pot plants growing in one of the bedrooms.
Firefighters from Encinitas and Carlsbad found a small fire in an upstairs bedroom of the home. They were able to knock it down in about five minutes, but in the process, they stumbled upon 40 to 40 marijuana plants.
While it appears the plants survived the fire, things may not go so well for the occupants of the house as the scene was turned over to “investigators upon the discovery.”
Thanks to a 5-0 decision by the Public Utilities Commission we get to keep our 760 area code, but were going to have to dial 10 digits
The new area code will be the third overlay in California, following the 424 area code in Los Angeles and 657 in Orange County. A phase-in period for the new area code is scheduled to begin in May, leading to mandatory use in October 2009.
All new numbers in Carlsbadistan will get the 442. Start programming those phones.
Carlsbadistan -based writer/photographer Sean O’Brien has posted some amazing photos of the Juliet Fire on his blog. Check them out to see just how close the Camp Pendleton fire looks at night.
Carlsbadistan’sJohn Frisbie was sick of the gasoline bills he was paying to get from him home in Carlsbad to his job at Rady Children’s Hospital in Kearny Mesa, riding the Coaster was fine, but all those busses just wasn’t doing it for him according to a story in the North County Times. That’s when he got a Segway scooter.
Frisbie said it took him about 15 minutes to learn how to ride the Segway, which is balanced by gyroscopes to keep the rider upright. Frisbie said he’s fallen only once, and that it was his fault. . . “You have to make sure the tires don’t leave the ground. Make sure to take bumps slowly, or the gyroscopes will get off and you’ll fall off,” he said. . . . His new toy is attracting plenty of attention. Passing drivers honk and wave as he rolls by. He’s had people turn their cars around and ask him where he got the Segway.
Sadly, there is absolutely no way to ride a Segway without looking like a total tool. But don’t tell John we said that.
Thesa Graves, 19, of Carlsbad was killed and three others were injured after she ran a red light and “collided with a newspaper delivery truck” at around 10 PM Friday October 10, 2008 at the corner of Carlsbad Village Drive and El Camino Real, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The teen was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Three passengers were hospitalized with unknown injuries. . . . Firefighters had to use rescue equipment to free the four occupants of the Toyota Corolla from the wreckage.
The victim suffered a 3-inch cut to his arm and a 3-inch cut to his stomach. He was taken to Mercy Hospital by helicopter, where he was reported in stable condition, said Carlsbad police Sgt. Keith Blackburn.
A 24-year-old man who was running from the scene with a knife was arrested. That must have been the helicopter we twittered about at 11:06 PM.
Our party crashing skills are seriously lagging as we missed the first two nights of the Fortune Most Powerful Women conference at the Four Seasons Aviara October 1-3, 2008. Here’s a little of what we’ve missed in addition to hanging out at the lobby bar pretending to be gigolos.
