Carlsbad Police Officer Honored

by The Editors on June 4, 2008

Last October we reported that an unnamed, off-duty Carlsbad Police officer who was visiting Belleville, Illinois had saved a woman who had been stabbed, by jumping in and taking action. Now we know who that officer was. It was Sgt. Matt Lowe.

At the 88th annual California Peace Officers’ Association awards luncheon at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on May 20, 2008 Sgt. Lowe was honored for his work.

You have handed out awards today to the best and the most courageous individuals, and I want to congratulate these people,” Schwarzenegger said. “The California Peace Officers’ Association has made extraordinary contributions.”

Congratulations, Sgt. Lowe. Thanks for being such a great representative of Carlsbad and law enforcement in general.

Welcome To The Charter Carlsbad

by The Editors on June 4, 2008

Thanks to a landslide vote yesterday (we forgot to vote) Proposition D collected 82.2 percent of the votes making Carlsbad a “charter” city, according to a story in the North County Times. This means the City of Carlsbad will have a little more local control and the freedom to get around some state laws.

With Tuesday’s passage of Prop. D, Carlsbad can exempt itself from some, but not all, state requirements. A charter city can’t refuse to follow state public meeting laws or traffic regulations, but it can set its own election standards and create its own process for handling construction contracts.

And this apparently means saving money by not necessarily being forced into paying union wages when it comes to building things.

Carlsbadistan Star Of High Gas Prices Story

by The Editors on June 4, 2008

2008-06-01T234145Z 01 Nootr Rtridsp 2 Business-Markets-Oil-Col-1When the Reuters new agency sent out their “rising oil price” wire story to the world they were kind enough to include a photo showing what many in the US consider outrageously high gas and diesel prices. That photo was taken in at our local Carlsbadistan Exxon station. Because we’re probably paying more for gas that everyone else in the nation.

No, we don’t consider it a blessing.

Same-Sex Couples Chomping At The Bit

by The Editors on June 4, 2008

If the California Supreme Court decision stands then on June 17, 2008 same-sex marriages licenses will be streaming out all over the state, according to a story in Today’s Local News. This comes as great news for a long-time Carlsbad couple.

Carlsbad residents Linda Sanders and Evelyn Thomas, who will celebrate their 18th year as a couple June 30, plan to get their marriage license in San Marcos on June 17. The couple plan to be among the first to wed under California’s new same-sex marriage ruling. . . . “We’re going to get our license the very first day they’ll let us,” Sanders said. “We figured that we should get it done right away because we know there’s going to be an effort to stop it.”

Eighteen years is long time to wait to make it legal. We guess we’ll see what happens. There are some pretty rich people against it.

Clifton’s Harley Ride For Breast Cancer

by The Editors on May 29, 2008

Dave2Carlsbad’s David Clifton, 62, left this morning from VG Donut & Bakery in Cardiff to ride his motorcycle for three months to raise money for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation. We’ve never figured out how this stuff really works, but apparently, just saying you’re going to do something silly, like ride a motorcycle aimlessly around the county all summer, is enough to get people to donate money.

I’ve been thinking about making the trip for a zillion years,” David Clifton said. “And I’m hoping this is a unique enough deal that it will raise awareness for all women . . . If one lady goes to get an exam, that’s all I would need. I’d like to help find the cure sooner, quicker, faster.”

Clifton says that by showing up places he’s going to be doing great work for to find a cure. Guess it’s better than cruising the country for Satan. We wish David lots of luck. Click here to make a donation.

Pilot Overshot The Carlsbad Runway

by The Editors on May 9, 2008

According to a story in Aviation Week , the Cessna CE-510 that “ground looped” McClelland-Palomar Airport on April 19, 2008 was as a result of landing too fast, too far down the runway. Apparently the pilot. . .

. . . crossed the runway threshold 15 knots fast and landed close to the middle of Runway 24, according to a preliminary NTSB interview with the pilot.

Once the pilot realized he couldn’t stop the aircraft on the remaining runway, he intentionally ground looped the aircraft to stop it before it ran off the west end and down a steep ravine. . . . During the flight, the right PFD began to flicker and the autopilot disengaged.

The pilot reported that he was “fatigued by the workload associated with coping with the system” and he banged up California Natural Products plane.

Grand Bar Puncher Gets Paid

by The Editors on May 7, 2008

A Vista jury awarded New York Yankees fan Mario Melendez $25,000 in his lawsuit against Red Socks fan David Sanborn of Oceanside on Tuesday. The lawsuit centered about a baseball rivalry fight on July 3, 2006 at Carlsbad’s Grand Avenue Bar & Grill.

No criminal charges were filed in the case, but Melendez sued for damages in Vista Superior Court – for injuring his hand when he punched Sanborn. . . .“He grabbed me and picked me up,” he told jurors. “I really thought he was going to body-slam me.”

Sanborn said Melendez challenged him to a fight, then sucker-punched him. According to court records, Sanborn’s attorneys argued that Melendez “consented” to the fight, which lasted a few seconds, ending when Melendez punched Sanborn.

While both men claim slightly different versions of the story it seems that the jury agreed with Melendez’s version. And the puncher got paid.
