TGIF Aug 7: The Screamin’ Primas

by The Editors on August 3, 2009

Screaminprimas.JpgOkay, so The Screamin’ Primas may not be the musical apex of the 2009 TGIF Jazz In The Park season, but they are kicking off the Calavera Hills Park leg of this Carlsbadistan concert series with a “tribute” to the late, great “Rat Pack” era Las Vegas lounge singer Louis Prima. He was the guy responsible for “Jump, Jive and Wail, Just a Gigolo, and That Old Black Magic. But don’t let that scare you because:

This eight-piece tribute band is no pale imitation, capturing the energy, emotion and excitement of Prima’s late 1950s Las Vegas Night Club show via live re-creations performed in the original Louis Prima style.

By the way, if you need an exciting original live act for your next party or corporate event? The Screamin’ Primas are your answer. At least that’s what it says on their website.

Magic On The Coast

by The Editors on July 31, 2009

073009 11

The highlight of our evening on the streets of Carlsbadistan for the somewhat subdued launch of Thursdays On The Coast was a performance by Tonette The Magician in front of the Carlsbad Theater. Her best trick was making everyone walk away with a smile.

There is more music and art planned for tonight, so look for it if you’re in Carlsbadistan for the evening.

Roddie RomeroWe said it last year and we’ll say it again: Mmmm, dees shore am shweet jazz een doe pox. Roddie Romero & The Hub City All-Stars add a little Cajun to Carlsbadistan’s Poinsettia Park this Friday Night July 31, 2009 as they bring a little Southern Louisiana rhythm and soul to Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz In The Parks.

In their 2008 TGIF debut, the audience picked up on it right away – a rich gumbo of heartfelt Louisiana rhythm and soul, plus supreme musicianship – right out of Cajun country. This year brings them back for a repeat of bon temps at Poinsettia. Acclaimed as the tightest band to rise from the Louisiana swamps, Roddie Romero & the Hub City All- Stars were Grammy-nominated in 2008 for their double album, “The La Louisianne Sessions.”

TGIF July 24: Lowrider Band

by The Editors on July 21, 2009

Lowrider

All our friends know the lowrider and it would be silly to think that we would miss out on the band formerly known as War when The Lowrider Band playing at Poinsettia Park this Friday night at 6 PM as part of the TGIF Jazz In The Park.

After losing the rights to the name War years ago in a court battle, Harold Brown, B.B. Dickerson, Lee Oskar and Howard Scott from the landmark ’70s soul-rock band now play their music together as the Lowrider Band, a reference to one of their biggest hits and a song that earned them lifelong respect in Latino car culture. The group’s signature funk-rock sound – a steamy Afro-Latin R&B groove, always with a social message grounded by their distinctively breezy Southern California vibe – propelled a series of ’70s hits, including “Slippin’ Into the Darkness,” “All Day Music,” “The World Is a Ghetto,” “The Cisco Kid,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” and “Low Rider.” Today the funky jam band is on a mission to stake their rightful claim as the indisputable authorities of their top hits.

Great after linking this post all up we can’t get that song out of our heads. . . low ride er, goes a little slower. . .

Top Pic Bios.Jpg

TGIF Jazz In The Parks moves a little closer to town this week as Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca bring their rockin’ blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms to Poinsettia Park this Friday July 17, 2009 from 6-8 PM.

Ricardo Lemvo has established himself as a pioneer with his innovative music. Lemvo’s blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms with pan-African styles (soukous, Angolan semba and kizomba) has been described by the Los Angeles Times as “seamless and infectious. . . .This Congo-born artist of Angolan ancestry is the embodiment of the Afro-Latin Diaspora which connects back to Mother Africa via the Cuban clave rhythm. Lemvo is truly multi-cultural and equally at home singing in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Lingala, and Kikongo.

This will be the band’s third season playing TGIF Jazz In The Parks so most everyone knows what to expect.

TGIF July 10: Bill Magee Blues Band

by The Editors on July 7, 2009

Billmagee.JpgBill Magee is known as the hardest working man in San Diego Blues and one look the list of upcoming shows on his website proves it. Seems like he’s playing somewhere almost every night of the week. On Friday July, 10, 2009 Magee and his band will make their ninth appearance at Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz In The Parks at Stagecoach Park on Carlsbadistan’s eastern front.

After getting his start forming the duo-guitar band, Jimmy James and the Flames with Jimi Hendrix, Magee played with B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Otis Redding, John Lee Hooker, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, Wilson Pickett, and Bo Diddley in venues such as Madison Square Garden, The Filmore East, and both Yankee and Shea Stadiums. This is smokin’ southern blues at its finest, with a few influences from Chicago and Kansas City thrown in for good measure. Bottom line: every time Bill performs, it sounds like he invented the blues.

TGIF July 3: Big Time Operator

by The Editors on June 30, 2009

E800 Front Tgif2005-04.JpgIt just wouldn’t be summer without a show from San Diego’s own big band swingers Big Time Operator. Their concert this Friday July 3, 2009 at Stagecoach Park marks the band’s 10th appearance at TGIF Jazz In The Parks.

Tradition-true and yet completely contemporary, the swingin’ players in Big Time Operator have a look, a feel, and a totally contagious enthusiasm that’s hard to beat and impossible to ignore. Their reputation as Entertainers Extraordinaire is backed up by five San Diego Music Awards as Best Big Band. Led by singer Warren Lovell, Big Time Operator excels at playing classic big band arrangements, latin arrangements, and impressive original songs.

Kind of makes us wish we’d taken those swing dancing lessons our friends kept telling us about.

TGIF June 26: Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas

by The Editors on June 23, 2009

Nathan WilliamsOn his myspace page Nathan Williams of Nathan & The Zydeco Cha Chas proudly proclaims: “I’m The Zydeco Hog!!” and we’ve no reason to doubt this down-home, accordion-squeezing Louisiana musician.

The accordion-driven dance music of this Creole band is the expression of a remarkable South Louisiana family. Joining founder Nathan Williams (accordion), brother Dennis Paul Williams brings his jazz-influenced guitar chops to the group. Rubboard player Mark Williams is a cousin and keyboardist Nathan Williams Jr. takes the tradition to the next generation. With surprising musical turns and a distinctive Caribbean lilt that reaches back to the very beginnings of Creole culture, Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas deliver uplifting, new music that stays true to its history.

Nathan and his Cha Chas family will be rocking Stagecoach Park this Friday night June 26, 2009 from 6-8 PM. Spicy, delicious, we’re sure.

TGIF June 19: Canned Heat

by The Editors on June 16, 2009

Wl 4Color2.JpgTalk a walk back to Woodstock this Friday night at Stagecoach Park as the counter culture electric blues of Canned Heat take the stage for opening night of The City of Carlsbadistan’s 2009 TGIF: Jazz In The Parks.

Canned Heat’s unique blend of modern electric blues, rock and boogie earned them international attention and secured their niche in the pages of rock ‘n’ roll history with their performances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival (along with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Who) and a headlining slot at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. Now celebrating their 40th anniversary, Canned Heat is still going strong. Anchored throughout by the steady hand of drummer/band leader Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra (a member since 1967), Canned Heat is on track to carry the boogie-blues it made famous well into the 21st century.

Save us some cheese and crackers please. It’s a long walk to the Eastern Front.
