Adrian Demain At Hensley’s April 28

by The Editors on April 28, 2008

Selfportrait-1As fans of The Cheap Lei’s and of Adrian Demain (as both a skateboarder and musician) we have to mention that he is playing at Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill tonight at 8 PM.

We would have liked to posted this a few days ago, but for some reason we haven’t been keeping up on the Hensley’s music schedule. We’re going to blame it on them.

Carlsbad Mankinis At Coachella

by The Editors on April 28, 2008

Carlsbdistanian’s Patrick Hoyny and Matt Hultberg, along with two friends from Vista, represented the Village well at the Coachella Music Festival this year by cruising the grounds in matching Vans, colored socks, hip-packs, and Speedos, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

“These are not Speedos,” clarified Hernandez, 29. “They’re male bikinis. We’re not endorsing Speedos.” . . . “Unless,” said Huerta, 24, “they want to pay us.”

“We’re here for us!” Hultberg declared. “We’re the best thing here this year … except for Prince.”

We’re guessing we’ll be seeing more of this on the beach this summer.

Joanie Mendenhall’s New Album

by The Editors on April 27, 2008

Jmendenhall3-1

Tonight, Carlsbad piano teacher and pop-music songstress Joanie Mendenhall is playing The Casbah with Matt Curreri and The Ex-Friends, but what we’re most interested in is her new album. At her day job at Carlsbad’s Giacoletti Music, Mendenhall teaches piano to 35 students a week, but in another part of her musical life she writes sweetly pleasant and hooky pop songs that will be collected on an album titled On A String, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Due out this summer on her own Good Tonic Records label, “On a String” is a winning collection of 10 songs that strike a balance between rootsy charm and finely honed craft. It features such stellar area musicians as Mitch Manker on trumpet and flugelhorn, Archie Thompson on tenor sax and Ben Moore, who engineered “On a String,” on organ. Moore co-produced the album with Mendenhall, guitarist-violinist Ray Suen and drummer Tyler Ward.

Watch for this album because Joanie is really good. Just click and listen to all three songs (especially Empty Your Heart). . . trust us.

Queen & Deep Purple At La Costa 6

by The Editors on April 19, 2008

Queen ConThe seminal rock band Queen only captured one of their concerts on film. And that was in November of 1981 when Under Pressure was topping charts in the UK and stopped off in Montreal Canada on the way home from Japan.

Now, Queen fans will get to relive (or in our case, see for the first time) that concert in it’s “digitally restored” and “newly mixed and mastered in DTS Surround Sound” glory on Monday night, April 28, 2008 at the La Costa 6 Cinemas in a “pure digital” presentation of Queen & Deep Purple.

Always a great live band, with arguable the greatest frontman of all time in Freddie Mercury, they excelled themselves with the cameras rolling.

It’s one night only and tickets are $10. Having never seen Queen, we think this might be the next best thing, and no one is required to sit through Deep Purple.

The Library Gets Kicked All Funky

by The Editors on April 17, 2008

Funky1

The Carlsbad Recreation Department’s Battle of the Bands winners, The Funky Kicks got the Rock The Library concert series rolling tonight at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad Library on Dove Lane. We’ve seen their stickers showing up all over Carlsbadistan, so we thought we should go check them out.

Funky2An enthusiastic crown of more than 100 fans showed up to hear the local band groove out their set of original and cover songs. We were impressed. The band plays tight, clean, funky rock that get heads bouncing.

Those who didn’t get a change to catch the library show can see the band this weekend. Gregory Kellogg, the band’s lead singer, invited everyone to come here them play this weekend. “We’re playing on Saturday at the Calavera Hills Park. You know where that is right?” he said. “And then on Sunday we’re playing at the Oceanside Pier for the 420 Remix.”

Thank God It’s Full: Jazz In The Park

by The Editors on March 27, 2008

Eccrowd-1

The annual Carlsbad TGIF Jazz in the Park series has gotten so popular that it is outgrowing its venues according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times. So event planners are going to change things up a bit.

The plans will be unveiled at a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Stagecoach Park, 3420 Camino de los Coches. . . . Under the city’s tentative plan, no concerts will be held at downtown’s Pine Avenue Park, because it isn’t big enough to hold thousands of people, Gordon said.

But it appears that some aren’t too happy about the changes. Especially news about moving the stage at Stagecoach Park. Or in our case, we’re not happy about not being able to walk to any of the TGIF events next year (which ruins half the fun in our opinion). Maybe Carlsbadistan will just have to start their own concert series.

Laurie Anderson at The Museum of Making Music

by The Editors on March 21, 2008

Carlsbad’s Museum of Making Music is presenting an evening with performance artist/musician Laurie Anderson on Monday April 7, 2008 at 7 PM. Ms. Anderson takes a break from her current Homeland Tour to present a “casual discussion and violin demonstration” as part of MMM’s newest exhibition, The Violin in America. For those who don’t know her:

Laurie Anderson is an American experimental performance artist and musician who plays violin and keyboards and sings in a variety of experimental music and art rock styles. Initially trained as a sculptor, Anderson did her first performance art piece in the late 1960s. Throughout the 1970s, Anderson did a variety of different performance art activities. She became widely known outside the art world in 1981 when her single “O Superman,” reached number two on the UK pop charts. She also starred in and directed the 1986 concert film, Home of the Brave. –from Wikipedia

We know her best from the song Excellent Birds (performed with Peter Gabriel). Ms. Anderson is a pleasant reminder that the 80s New Wave scene (that we loved so much) had moments of depth and artistic integrity. This is a don’t miss evening.

Tickets are $25 for general admission, $15 for students and Museum Members.
