Dini’s Front Patio Is Always Loaded

by The Editors on March 16, 2008

Dinis 31608

Those looking to roll into St. Patrick’s Day smoothly have already posted up on the patio at Dini’s on Coast Highway. For people who enjoy watching the sun set with a good drink in their hand, Dini’s is always the place. Just be careful, their cocktails are so well-crafted that they can (and occasionally do) sneak up on you. Which can be trouble, especially when you’re peddling your Electra cruiser home.

The Flying Elephant Interview

by The Editors on January 18, 2008

Mollyvol1MHensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill owner Matt Hensley has had a storied career that spans the world of professional skateboarding, music, and now the hospitality industry.

Skateboarding Magazine music writer Arlie Carstens recently interview Matt for the February 2008 issue of the magazine and found out why Matt just couldn’t stay off the road.

Flogging Molly tours really hard. I mean hard-touring bands look at our schedule and go, “Goddamn, you guys are f—kin’ crazy.” Ten years of that just got to me; I was missing too many of my kid’s games, and I just got manically depressed over all of it. One day I just freaked the f—k out and said, “I’m gonna walk away, I just can’t do this anymore.” And then I had to do something with myself, so I started a pub—a musical place—so I could be around music still and kind of keep it together. But I dunno, after doing it for a while and taking some time away from it (the band) I kind of came to the realization that the grass is always greener no matter what you do. Not being in the band anymore just kind of screwed my whole gig up; it’s such a big part of my life and who I am, it’s just weird to not be part of that anymore. It just doesn’t feel right. So after talking with those guys and going back and forth, they were happy to have me back.

And if all this makes you thirsty for some Guinness and “sweet piano playing” blonde rocker then stop by Henley’s tonight, January 18, 2008 from 7-10 PM to check out Taryn Donath. This girl can tickle her some ivory. Seriously.

Pizza Port’s Hop Suey Double Big In Boulder

by The Editors on October 15, 2007

Dsc00410.JpgAccording to a Denver Post Food Section blog, the Southern Sun brewpub in Boulder, Colorado is celebrating the Hop Harvest during the month of October and one of their featured beer samples is Pizza Port’s Hop Suey Double IPA:

It’s 9 percent alcohol, and it’s so hoppy it could strip paint. And I loved it. It carried plenty of citrus, but the emphasis hinged entirely on the powerful hops. I’d love to down one of these. But three in an evening? It might be too much hop.

Looks like the mountain hippies like it.

Carlsbad Village Dries Up

by The Editors on October 1, 2007

For the past 55 years if you wanted to stroll the streets of Carlsbad (or hang out in a public park) with an open container it was perfectly legal. Later this month, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times, all that is going to change.

For the first time in Carlsbad’s 55-year history, the city will prohibit the possession of open containers of alcohol on sidewalks, streets and other public areas in the downtown, except in fenced “beer garden” areas at street festivals or other special events.

And guess who was behind this new ordinance? Carlsbad’s bar owners. Interesting, huh?

Hensley Can’t Quit Flogging Molly

by The Editors on September 28, 2007

MatIt’s hard to keep a traveling according player tied down. Last January Matt Hensley announced that he was quitting the band Flogging Molly and was going to spend a little more time with his family in Carlsbad. He even bought Squid Joe’s and turned it into Hensley’s Flying Elephant Pub & Grill. But now, with a new album in the works, it appears that the former pro skateboarder is getting back in the band.

Matt says of his return, “The truth is that my life makes sense again, and I feel like I’m where I need to be in this world.” He also ads, “I missed the feeling of ‘knowing where you’re at.’ Being the accordion player in this band is my zone; where I belong. I got emails all the time from people who care deeply about the band. I missed being able to affect people in a positive way.”

While we’re going to miss seeing him around Hensley’s, Flogging Molly fans around the world are going to be much happier that Matt has returned to the band.

City Council Approves Entertainment Regs

by The Editors on September 19, 2007

We knew that the vote on AB# 19,171 was mostly formality, but last night at City Council it official passed with a unanimous vote according to a story on NBCSanDiego.com.

The ordinances go into effect Oct. 25. Anyone who is found to be in violation of the rules faces fines. The exact amounts have not yet been made public.

While trying to logically regulate drunk people is always a losing battle, it’s nice that City Council cares enough to try something.

Carlsbad Party Regulations Up Again

by The Editors on September 18, 2007

When the Carlsbad City Council meets tonight one of the topics they will be discussing is a new set of “entertainment regulations” that hopes to make the Village a little quieter. According to the North County Times the new regulations look a little like this:

  • obtain an entertainment license if they serve alcohol and offer entertainment such as live music;
  • pay a $200 license fee that would be good for three years;
  • have employees trained through a state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board certified program;
  • have at least one security guard on the premises;
  • close between 2 and 6 a.m.;
  • between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., meet a new city noise standard of 65 decibels, up from the initial 60-decibel proposal.

None of it sounds unreasonable, especially when you consider the problems the Village has been having lately.

Justice Dept Sikh’d on Carlsbad Restaurants

by The Editors on August 24, 2007

When Dave Bindra, 22, tried to get into Carlsbad’s Ocean House Restaurant and Grill on July 27 wearing a turban, he was stopped at the door because of rules against do-rags, beanies and other “head wear associated with street gangs,” according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

. . . when he explained to Ocean House manager Steve Town that his turban was not a do-rag, but a religious expression that he never removes in public, Town said, “ ‘Beanie, do-rag or turban, you still have a towel on your head and you’re not going in.’ ” . . . Town denies he made the “towel” remark and said Bindra and his friends were denied entry because they were being aggressive.”

Bindra was told the same thing at the Coyote Bar. Then the religious man and his friends went back to the Ocean House and got into a yelling match with management. Now, Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund has complained to the US Justice Department and a San Diego law professor thinks Bindra might have a strong case. . . The story has even been picked up by The Times of India.
