Jason “The Punisher” Lambert in UFC 88

by The Editors on August 21, 2008

Thumbnail Crop-1.PhpCarlsbadistan’s resident cage fighter Jason Lambert will make his middleweight debut at UFC 88 “Breakthrough” on September 6, 2008 at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia according to Sherdog.com.

The bout will mark Lambert’s debut at middleweight, who spent the entirety of his seven-year career toiling in the 205-pound ranks. After reeling off a trio of Octagon wins in 2006, Lambert (23-8) has dropped his last three out of four, necessitating a change of pace for the Carlsbad, Calif. resident. . . . The well-rounded Lambert holds a key knockout victory over Renato “Babalu” Sobral at UFC 68 “Uprising” in March 2007, where the father of one came back from deficit to overcome the regarded Brazilian.

Finally, someone to cheer for.

Carlsbad Middleweight Wins Comeback

by The Editors on July 25, 2008

Dannyperez 240X230 20080725Carlsbadistan’s middleweight boxer Danny Perez won a decision last night in his first fight in more than two years, according to a story in the The Sweet Science.

Nice combinations in the third round by Perez as a toe to toe battle ensued. Stanisavljevic landed a couple shots but took many more in return as his face was bloodied. The fourth and the fifth came and both men waged war. Perez’s 37 year old opponent fought on as Perez constantly peppered his body and face. By the sixth and final round Perez had completely dominated Stanisavljevic, who’s slower and less talented than Perez but still put up a good fight.

We knew there were a lot of fighters in Carlsbadistan, but we didn’t know there were any boxers.

Carlsbad Lightning BU-8 Champs

by The Editors on July 24, 2008

Full 589

We’re not even going to pretend we understand anything about the convoluted world of kids soccer nor it’s organizations. That said, apparently:

The Carlsbad Lightning BU-8 Red team, led by coach Bob Barbosa, prevailed over a tough Del Mar Sharks team, 4-1, to grab their first championship of the season at the Carlsbad Cup. . . .Multiple goals were scored in the tournament by Christian Kampfl, Ryan Anderson, Cole Miller, Jet Trask and Ryan Ashby. Outstanding defensive play was provided by Bennet Chergosky, Juan Ibanez and Ethan Cohen. Star goalies included Cooper Ward and Logan Schmitt.

This of course follows the Carlsbad Lightning GU-12 Black Championship win on Monday. Two questions: how many “championships” are there in a season? And, do these kids get a blue ribbon and a trophy each and every time they kick the ball?

Carlsbad’s RyGuy Kicking It In Ireland

by The Editors on July 16, 2008

Carlsbad soccer player Ryan Guy, 23, is reportedly “making a name for himself in the Irish Premier Division,” according to a story on Yanks Abroad.

Guy has shown a nose for the goal, bagging 4 goals already this season. The 23 year old debuted in April of 2007 for the Irish club, after a professional stint with the Southern California Fusion of the National Professional Soccer League, the US’ fourth tier.

He’s also getting used to living in Ireland.

“It’s hard for me to believe I’ve been here a year and a half already. It was rough and tumble, frustrating to say the least for the first five months or so when I was going through the work permit process and unable to get on the pitch. When it did finally go through however, I was fortunate to put in good performances when questions were asked of me.

2008 Carlsbad Triathlon: Down Under Thunder

Boyd Conrick, of Newcastle, Australia and Rachel Challis, of Carlsbadistan (by way of Christchurch, New Zealand) bested the field of nearly 1000 as the 2008 City of Carlsbad Triathlon finished up today at 9:20 AM under perfectly clear, warm skies. Conrick’s time of 1:08:37.8 was one-minute off Michael Simpson’s winning time in last year’s race.

Conrick Fin2Conrick was the first out of the water and for the rest of the race no one ever got close. “It was a great race,” he said moments after crossing the finish line. “I love the ocean swims, you know. I felt good.”

Having competed in the Lake Stevens Half Ironman just last weekend, where he placed 7th, Conrick was not sure he was going to be 100 percent for this race.

“I didn’t know whether my legs would be recovered, you know. But I got in a good rhythm on the swim and I didn’t push too hard on the bike, and then I went around one of the turns halfway on the bike and I realized those guys weren’t catching me and they were together, so I pushed a little harder and then got a good lead on the run and then was able to go off hard and then ease off a little in the last half mile.”

The women’s pro field was so small that Challis felt she didn’t really have that much competition even though she finished in 1:17:51.6. “There were only two pros in the field so that was already a good head start I’m sure the others are preparing for half Ironman and Ironman racers,” she said.

Challis-1But this is more than a race for the 32-year-old mother of two toddlers. “It’s still good to be back,” she said. “This is the first race that I did after my two year old was born two years ago. He was only two months old, so now I have to do it every year now. So it’s nice to win it finally.”

But those were just the winners. The real stories are your stories. Please follow Tom In Carlsbad’s lead and let us know how your race went in the comments section. The best stories will win Carlsbadistan sticker packs.

Damn, It’s Carlsbad Triathlon Time Again

by The Editors on July 9, 2008

Tri Finish
Canadian Michael Simpson winning the event last year.

The City of Carlsbad Triathlon and Health & Wellness Weekend rolls into Carlsbadistan July 13, 2008 and that means several things: No surfing from Tamarack north, nor walking on the seawall Sunday morning, and a beautifully closed Coast Highway. It also means some extra entertainment for our morning coffee sipping.

It appears that it is still possible to register so if you’ve always thought about doing this triathlon there still may be time. Or, just relive the magic of last year’s event by clicking here to view our stunning coverage.

Vigilucci’s Beach Bocce World Championships

by The Editors on July 9, 2008

ArtworkFew things in life are more fun than rolling your balls on the beach. And at 28th Annual Vigilucci’s Bocce Ball World Championships on Saturday July 12, 2008 at Del Mar’s Dog Beach that exactly what 300 people are going to do.

What’s the Carlsbadistan hook? This year the money being raised at the event is going to the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Club.

“It’s such an awesome event, North County’s cleaner answer to the Over-the-Line tournament in San Diego,” said Pat Maldi, marketing director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. “It’s a party on the beach —- bocce ball with sand, food and fun.”

The event is sold out, but the next best thing to playing with your balls is watching someone else play with theirs. Play begins at 8:15 AM and complimentary parking (and a Shuttle) is available at the Del Mar Racetrack. For more information click here to email Pat Maldi, or call (760) 729-0207 x303.

Rod Laver On 2008 Wimbledon Finals

by The Editors on July 7, 2008

LaverCarlbadistan’s Rod Laver (they guy whose shoes we have loved for years) watched the Wimbledon Finals in awe yesterday according to a Jay Paris story in the North County Times.

It was the best match I’ve ever seen,” said Laver, the greatest tennis player ever. “I know (NBC’s) John McEnroe said that, and I have to agree him. I was watching it and thinking, ‘How do you win a point?’ ”

That was something,” said Laver, mimicking other drained fans after Sunday’s 4-hour, 48-minute final. “Seeing some of those shots that Nadal was hitting, you would think he would mis-hit a bunch of them. Those shots are coming off the grass where the bounces aren’t always even and it was windy.”

He didn’t lose any records, but winner Rafael Nadal joined Bjorn Borg and Mr. Laver as being the only three players in “the Open era” to win consecutive French Open and Wimbledon titles.

CHS Field: Arsenic And Lancers

by The Editors on July 4, 2008

The football field at Carlsbad High School was condemned yesterday after soil tests showed elevated levels of arsenic six inches below the field, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The routine testing was part of the school’s planned expansion, which was to include the demolition of the football field and track at the end of this year’s football season. With the results of last week’s tests, however, orange fencing has been assembled around the field and the Lancers will be playing on a new surface earlier than they imagined.

Maybe that’s why other teams have such a hard time winning at Swede Krcmar Field.
