by The Editors on April 27, 2008

Normal 627541188 1209296267Add motocross racer Jason Lawrence to the growing list of action sports stars who call Carlsbad home. Last night, Lawrence, placed second in the AMA Supercross Lites class in Seattle, Washington last night and brought home his first AMA Supercross Lites Championship.

While Dungey pulled away from the field, Lawrence moved into second place and rode to the first AMA Supercross Lites championship of his career. Yamaha’s Broc Hepler, of Kittanning, Pa., finished in third place. The win for Dungey was his third of the season.

“Once I settled into second place, I was really nervous,” said Lawrence. “I just wanted to keep it on two wheels and ride a smart race. I was really comfortable when my Yamaha teammate Broc Hepler was behind me.”

Congrats, Jason.

Ethiopia’s Zewdie Takes 2008 Carlsbad 5000

by The Editors on April 6, 2008

At about 12:30 PM the Pro Men took to the streets of Carlsbad for the Carlsbad 5000 main event. The breezy, sunny day awaited them. After waiting out there for 25 minutes, it was shocking to see how fast they sprinted by. Then again, they are some of the fastest humans in the world. So that puts it in perspective.

The winner? Maregu Terefe Zewdie of Ethiopia finished the 2008 Carlsbad 5000 in 13:34, followed by the UK’s Mo Farah, and Haron Lagat of Kenya. Kenyan’s swept the women’s podium: Vivian Cheruiyot with a time of 15:14, followed by Rose Kosgei, and Genoveva Kigen.

The big question: what happened to American miler Alan Webb? Rumors have him pulling out at the two mile mark. We know he was in 8th place going into the turn at Tamarack, and was at the back of the lead pack at Cherry St. But somewhere between Cherry and the finish line Alan Webb pulled out of the race and was not listed as a finisher.

According to the running blog Coach Joe English, Webb dropped out a half mile from the finish, not because he was injured, but because he was “hurting.”

”I was hurting,” Webb said. “I was putting in surges just to stay up where I was. As soon as we turned around that second time I was done. It’s the only time I’ve dropped out of a race for no other reason than I was hurting.”

“I’m always trying to push deeper and go harder,” Webb said. “It’s in there, I just need to get it out of me. Hopefully this won’t be my last time in Carlsbad. I look forward to coming back and doing better.”

The 2008 Carlsbad 5000 Is On

by The Editors on April 6, 2008

Crw 3385

Master’s Women (40 and over) were the second to go this morning on a perfect Carlsbadistan day. Racers who worried yesterday about overcast and cloudy skies had nothing to fear today other than five kilometers of asphalt.

With the pro men getting out of the start at 12:15 there is still time to see history made as American mile record holder Alan Webb, 25, starts on his Road to Beijing in the Carlsbad 5000 (click the link for the USA Today Story). He’s hoping to grab a world road record. And it looks like today might be the day.

“I wanted another go in a longer race on the road before the start of the track season,” said Webb, who ran the 1,500 meters at the Athens Games in 2004 but didn’t make it out of the first round. “I know the world record on the road was set here. I’ve heard about it over the years, and winning it is a big deal. It’s not a local 5K. It’s a pretty big deal.

And it will be an even bigger deal if Webb can shatter the record. For more photos follow the jump.

Pfankuch Tied For Lead In SCORE Points Race

by The Editors on April 4, 2008

Carlsbad desert racer Adam Pfankuch is currently tied with Bakersfield’s Cory Boyer for the “Overall and Class 1-2/1600 points after two rounds of the five-race 2008 SCORE Desert Series,” according to a story on WhoWon.com.

While admittedly off to a great start, both Boyer and Pfankuch are continuing to decide on a race-by-race basis if they will be able to push through to November’s season-ending 41st Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. Obviously being up front in their Class point standings makes it an easier decision and an easier task of finding the sponsors needed to press forward. Both will have a second driver at the SCORE Baja 500, Cory will have has father Rick and Pfankuch will team with veteran Rick St. John, Carlsbad, Calif..

From dust to glory.

Acura Tennis Classic Sold To China

by The Editors on April 2, 2008

Acuraclassiclogo-1Each summer, we’d look forward to pretending that Carlsbadistan is an Ivy League city by donning our tennis whites and attending a slew of tennis matches at the Acura Classic at the La Costa Resort & Spa. So last year we learned that the event had been sold to the Women’s Tennis Association, we were bummed. Now it all makes sense.

The WTA Tour purchased the event from Raquel Giscafre and Jane Stratton, the officers of Promotion Sports Inc., whose rationale in divesting themselves of the tournament was that they thought they had taken it as far as they could. Having acquired the Acura, the WTA, acting to realize the vision of Larry Scott, its chairman and CEO, sold the tournament to tennis interests in Beijing.

How do you say, “Cool,” in Mandarin?

Carlsbad Racer Wins San Felipe 250 Again

by The Editors on March 19, 2008

From MotocycleUSA.com:

Adam Pfankuch, Carlsbad, Calif., earned his fifth win in San Felipe in Class 1-2/1600 in a VW-powered Mirage. Class 1-2/1600 had the largest field in the race with 28 starters.

Adam finished 15th overall among the cars and trucks in the 22nd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 with an average speed of 46.46 MPH. Sounds a little like Pfankuch dominates his class.

Carlsbad’s Upper Deck Turns 20

by The Editors on March 12, 2008

Random Key 79252 File Jordan.Michael.1Carlsbadistan’s own trading card company Upper Deck turns 20 this year and to celebrate the company is producing a limited-edition card set featuring all the athletes (like Michael Jordan) who helped made Upper Deck famous.

Upper Deck was founded in 1988, but as every collector knows, the first set from the leader in sports trading cards debuted in 1989.

As Upper Deck prepares for the 20th anniversary of that historic set, a special collecting experience is being offered in the months leading up to the release of Upper Deck’s 2009 Series 1 Baseball. The company is producing a limited-edition, 80-card set featuring athletes from professional baseball, football, basketball and hockey that have helped make Upper Deck the collector’s choice over the last 20 years.

Happy Birthday, Upper Deck. Twenty-years and we’ve never bought one of your cards or products. Is that possible?

La Costa QB Set To Freeze Ass Off

by The Editors on January 31, 2008

La Costa Canyon quarterback Jose Mohler announced Monday night that he will be accepting a full scholarship to North Dakota State University, in Fargo North Dakota.

“I just hit me all of a sudden,” Mohler said. “I was sitting on the plane and I thought, ‘I can totally see myself playing there. . . . “It was quite frigid when I went there,” Mohler said. “But other than that, it was a great fit. The players were all really great, they play in a dome and the coaches said I’d have a chance to contribute pretty soon. I can’t wait to get started.”

Mohler doesn’t even begin to know what cold is. Seriously.
