Carlsbadistan’s Hunter Stewart is an 8-year-old trophy kart driver who is racing to find a cure for breast cancer, according to a story in AutoWeek magazine.
He does this not simply because his 34-year-old mom, Alycia, has the insidious disease. He does this because he believes it is the right thing to do. Hunter races a Ford Ranger Trophy kart to raise money and awareness for a cure. If his first season is an indication, he might get the job done.
Hunter finished fourth in the championship “earning a ride on the top-flight Team Adrenalin Trophy truck for ’08.” Aside from all the other money he has raised Hunter donated $1,000 of his own allowance money last year to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and has been featured on the Ellen Degeneres Show. We hope the best for Hunter and his mother Alycia.

When the 2008 Carlsbad Marathon starts at 7:30 AM on Sunday morning 10,000 runners of comically diverse shapes and sizes will be pounding the streets of Carlsbadistan.
After the starter’s gun goes off, Marathoners will head for the coast passing the Buena Vista Lagoon through the village of Carlsbad to Carlsbad Boulevard (Highway 101). You’ll head south on the 101 to Palomar Airport Road (PAR). After a 3 mile trip inland on you’ll return to the coast and again head south on 101 to a quick U-turn near La Costa Avenue back up the cost to the finish line.
We’ll be out watching along the course. If you’re running let us know how it goes.

We feel badly about not warning anyone of the upcoming Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon scheduled for January 20, 2008, so this news makes us feel even worse. That’s right, registration is closed.
Registration for both the Carlsbad Marathon and the Carlsbad Half Marathon have reached participant capacity and have now closed, announced In Motion, Inc., the event’s organizer. Scheduled for January 20, 2008, the marathon and half marathon race fields have been capped at 1,500 and 7,600 entrants, respectively.
That’s not to say you can just run along without a number or sneak in with a charity organization.

Carlsbad’s Kelly McCann, a member of the Duke University Blue Devils women’s soccer team, made a major contribution to their weekend win over the University of Georgia and helped move the Blue Devils in the NCAA Sweet 16 on Sunday.
Junior Kelly McCann played the ball to the right side of the field just outside Georgia’s penalty box. Redmond, a native of Morristown, N.J., latched on to the pass, took a touch back inside to put the ball on the left foot, and struck a bending ball into the top left corner of the Bulldog net. Betos made a diving effort and got a hand on the shot but couldn’t catch enough to parry it wide. . . “Kelly McCann played a really good entry ball to her,” said [Robbie] Church. “She turned and started to run at their back line. I noticed that none of their back players stepped to her. She knows that if they don’t step to her she has the freedom to hit. She then cranked it and it was a great goal.” . . McCann, who is from Carlsbad, Calif., posted her fourth assist this year.
Yeah, that’s how we do it in Carlsbadistan. Congrats, Kelly.

Yesterday, at Magnolia School, The Silver Surfers soccer team won the “Boys Under 10” divisional championships. We’re guessing there were a couple other winning teams in other divisions as well (for instance, the girls under 10 The Pink Panthers), however, those player’s parents didn’t send us a photo.

Rachel Morris, the sophomore golf champ from Carlsbad High School, rounded up her second San Diego Sectional girls individual title with a one under par 71 November 7, 2007 at Warner Springs Ranch.
“I had already won, so I knew I could do it again,” Morris said. “That gave me confidence. There was also a little bit of pressure, but I just focused on playing my own game.” . . . Morris opened with two of her four birdies on the first three holes in the shotgun start. . . . “I’m really excited,” Morris said. “I played well and shot a good score.”

Well, if the Carlsbad Lancers football team had to lose a game then it might as well have been to the Oceanside Pirates. Before tonight the Lancers hadn’t lost since September 2005 and all of Carlsbadistan can all take cold comfort in knowing that last night’s game in Oceanside was never even close.
The Pirate offense marched up and down the field at will, while Carlsbad’s offense couldn’t score a point and rarely made it’s first downs. The Lancers’ only touchdown was scored by an intercepting in the first half. Ouch. But streaks of any kind tend to play with people’s heads, so it’s probably good that this one is over and the Lancers can get back to basics. . . playing the quality football that we all know they are capable of.

We said it will be big news when the Carlsbad Lancer football team finally loses a game. And we hope there is no big news under this weekend’s friday night lights. Tonight the Lancer football team will be playing the Oside Pirates in Oceanside at 7 PM. Not following high school football at all we’d have to guess that this will be a pretty big game, especially when you consider that the Lancers have a 25 game winning streak rolling.
We’d go to the game ourselves if it weren’t for our long standing rule about not being in Oceanside after the sun goes down. Go Lancers. . . !
