Carlsbadistan’s grand daddy of drag racers, Ron Capps, returns to Pacific Raceways in Seattle, Washington for the NHRA Northwest Nationals and the site of his first professional NHRA win, according to a story on The Auto Channel.
Since then, he has won 29 titles in the Funny Car class, including his 1998 triumph in Seattle. He was also runner-up at the NHRA Northwest Nationals in 2001, 2006 and 2008, and No. 1 qualifier in 1997. So, it’s safe to say that Seattle is a favorite venue for the California native who drives the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger Funny Car in the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
Watch Ron this weekend on ESPN2 at 7 PM Saturday and 8:30 PM Sunday. Finals on ESPN3 Sunday at 4 PM.

Most of the more attractive, single, motivated NFL fans already know this, but Carlsbadistan’s La Costa Resort & Spa is currently hosting the annual NFC Rookie Symposium where 252 new draft picks get a four-day intro into what it means to be a professional football player, according to the North County Times.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell kicked off the annual rookie symposium Sunday evening by talking to the league’s newest players about a range of topics, including taking responsibility and honoring the game. . . “I talked on personal conduct. I didn’t speak about anyone in particular in that case,” Goodell said. “But I did talk about what I call protecting the shield. My job is to protect the integrity of the NFL and to make sure the game is as safe as possible.”
Wonder how those evening parties are going?

Yesterday (June 19, 2010) between 9 AM and 1 PM Encinitas-Based K5 Boardshops introduced dozens of people of all ages to the quickly growing sport of stand up paddling. Equipment from the major SUP manufacturers, including boards and paddles, was on the beach and free to demo at California Water Sports on the Carlsbadistan Lagoon.
Yes, we tried it. It was fun. We didn’t even get wet. It was a lot like canoeing standing up. Or, like hiking on water. . .

Former USD Men’s Basketball Coach Brad Holland has been named the new Executive Director/CPO at Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, according to a release sent out yesterday.
“I am delighted to say that we have identified the person we believe is best prepared to lead us into the future. Brad Holland’s experience and ability to inspire those around him make him an exemplary leader,” stated Scott Chelberg, the Club’s Board President. “We are excited to welcome him into our Clubhouse, and watch him interact and connect with our young members, board members, as well as community and business leaders.”
Holland is the all-time winningest basketball coach in USD history and he even won a World Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. That doesn’t happen without amazing leadership skills. Holland sounds like a welcome addition to the team.

It was windy on the Carlsbad 5000 course today as Ethiopia’s Ali Abdosh (2) and defending champ Bekana Dab (1) made Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge do all the work on the way down to the Tamarck Turn. They were probably hoping that it would tire him out. It didn’t.
Kipchoge was able to move out in front on the way back into town and by the time he made it to the turn onto Carlsbad Village Drive Kipchoge had the race well in hand. It wasn’t enough for a world road record, (Sammy Kipketer’s 13:00), but it was enough for the win and the confidence to know that the record is within reach.
