Upper Deck Sticks With Tiger Woods

by The Editors on December 16, 2009

Image.AspxCarlsbadistan’s trading card giant Upper Deck Co. announced yesterday (December 15, 2009) that they, unlike Elin Nordegren, would be “continuing their relationship” with Tiger Woods.

“Upper Deck will maintain its exclusive agreement with Tiger in both our sports cards and memorabilia categories, and we look forward to his eventual return to the PGA Tour,” Upper Deck CEO Richard McWilliam said in a statement. “Tiger and his family have our full support.”

That sounds great. We’re looking forward to a limited-edition Upper Deck Tiger’s Girlfriends set. Wonder if that’s in the works.

Warren Miller’s Dynasty Comes To Carlsbadistan

by The Editors on December 1, 2009

For the past 60 years nothing has marked the start of winter like a trip to the annual Warren Miller ski movie. On December 6, 2009 Warren Miller Entertainment’s newest film Dynasty will show at 4 and 7 PM at the Carlsbad Village Theatre.

Warren Miller’s Dynasty takes you on a breathtaking global tour of China, Alaska, Norway, Colorado, British Columbia, and more. Join legendary WME athlete Chris Anthony as he treks into China’s interior on a search for the birthplace of skiing; follow mountaineering marvel Chris Davenport to Norway’s highest peaks; reunite with the pride of the Midwestern ski community, Luke and Adam Schrab; and catch a rare glimpse at historic clips from Warren Miller Entertainment’s vault of vintage footage.

The fact that the real Warren Miller has nothing to do with these movies doesn’t seem to slow anyone down. It’s a brand and it’s a good time. Tickets for the show are $18 each and can be purchased at the box office or at the San Marcos Sport Chalet.

J.P. Theberge Wins Gold In Australia

by The Editors on September 13, 2009

Podium JpChallenged Carlsbadistan triathlete, J.P. Theberge, won gold in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series on the Gold Coast of Australia yesterday, September 12, 2009, in the T5 category for below-knee (BK) amputees.

Theberge said he didn’t feel like he had a World Championship race in him after what he called “a hectic flight from LA to Australia with three kids in tow,” but on race day it didn’t seem to affect him at all. Here’s how he called it on his blog Challengedracing.com:

I had a terrible swim, coming out of the water 8th overall beaten out of the water not only by two other T5 competitors, but also an arm amputee (who, in theory, I should have an advantage over) and a paraplegic (Aussie badass wheelchair racer, Bill Chaffey). . . I started the bike with two T5s in front of me, Ricaldo and Andre. . . Finally at around mile four, Peter Harsch, the Paratri team manager yelled out that I was :41 seconds behind. I knew I could catch him. . . I finished the line 1:24 minutes ahead of Rivaldo, almost seven minutes ahead of Scheiber and 14 minutes ahead of Paul Martin (who, surprisingly, had a lousy race.

Congrats J.P. For the rest of the story, click the link.

Rotary To Snuff Magee Shuffleboard Courts

by The Editors on September 1, 2009

Shuffle Down

It seems an underground group of Carlsbadistan shuffleboard players are none too happy about plans that the City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Rotary club have to “fill in” the Magee Shuffleboard courts to make room for more seating around a soon to be moved gazebo.

“We’ve been playing on the courts for over a year now and were completely blindsided when we heard that they were going to be torn out,” one player said. “Seriously, they’re tearing out recreational space so they can put in another gazebo for homeless people to hang out in?”

The courts’ pathway to destruction began about a year ago when the City of Carlsbad’s lease ran out on Rotary Park (the strip of grass East of Village Faire and West of the train tracks that is mainly frequented by homeless people). That strip of lawn is owned by the North County Transit District and without the lease, the park’s centerpiece gazebo needed a new home.

After exploring several different location options The Rotary Club and the City of Carlsbad apparently decided that the gazebo should be relocated to Magee Park, according to Carlsbad Parks and Rec Supervisor Paul Meadows. And once discussions began it became apparent that the current layout of the shuffleboard courts would not be consistent with the plans for the Rotary Club’s completely refurbished gazebo.

While the gazebo will be located just south of the shuffleboard courts the unevenness of the playing surface would cause problems for walking and sitting in the area in front of the Gazebo. “At that point we came in to do a redesign of the shuffle board courts,” Meadows said. “They’re going to fill that in for seating for the Gazebo.”

Did Rotary or The City of Carlsbad put it up for public comment? No. “There was no public forum for it,” Meadows said. “It was just decided. One of our men who works there says he’s never seen anyone play there.”

Maybe the underground group of shuffleheads have been too far underground. “We’re obviously not down there all the time, but we use the courts enough that we’re extremely interested in keeping them,” another player said. “What is the City trying to do? We don’t have a usable skatepark, they stalled on our swimming pool, and now they’re going to take our shuffleboard courts away. I don’t get it.”

Meadows said that anyone with concerns regarding the Magee shuffleboard courts should contact Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department Kyle Lancaster at (760) 434-2826.

Hill And Major Win 2009 Carlsbad Triathlon

Fountain Hills, Arizona’s Cam Hill, 42, and Encinitas’ (by way of Queensland Australia) Kate Major, 31, (pictured below right) won the 2009 Carlsbad Triathlon today July 12, 2009. Athletes swam 1k, biked 25k, and then ran a 5k before hitting the finish line near the Hemlock stairs just north of Tamarack on Carlsbad Blvd.

071209 136On a course that saw 1,200 athletes start under bright blue skies and finish in dense coastal fog Hill moved quietly into the lead and stayed there. But then, he’s apparently been doing that on monthly basis since May when he won The Sahuarita Lake Triathlon. In June he did the same at the Tribal Sprint Triathlon. So when he crossed the finishline in Carlsbad with a time of 1:09:17 it wasn’t all that much of a surprise, at least to Hill.

“It it felt pretty good,” Hill said in the finish area. “The bike was tough a little head-wind nice rolling hills, but it was good.”

For Major, who was the first of the women out of the water,it wasn’t the the bike that was tough. “The swim wasn’t the toughest today,” she said. “It was more the run, actually.”

Carlsbad Triathlon Shuts Down The Beach

by The Editors on July 11, 2009

063009P 50

In “these economic times” it would be logical that people wouldn’t go out and make things even harder for themselves, but apparently, the current financial climate is just giving people more time to train, and train, and train. And that’s one more reason the Carlsbad Triathlon continues to sell our year after year.

The race begins early tomorrow morning July 12, 2009.

Stallga Norte Park: The Wait Continues

by The Editors on April 21, 2009

042109 57ATonight, April 21, 2009, with a standing-room only crowd (most wearing bright yellow “Alga Norte Now” stickers) and even more out in the hall pressing posters up against the glass, the Carlsbad City Council voted 3-2 to push off the decision to begin construction on the Alga Norte Park by what could be another year.

The council was faced with 26 public comments in favor of the Alga Norte Park and five options presented by City staff:

1. Continue the project hold.
2. Build the park as designed
3. Rough Grade the site
4. Build just the aquatic center
5. Build everything but the aquatic center

When the discussions were over Mayor Bud Lewis, along with Councilmen Matt Hall, and Mark Packard voted in favor of the “rough grade” (option 3) on the Alga Norte Park property, while Ann Kulchin and Keith Blackburn voted against the motion.

Leave it to the convoluted workings of city politics to have the no votes be in support of building the park. “I am going to vote no on that because I think we have studied it to death,” Ann Kulchin said. “I think the time to build it is now.”

And for once we agreed with her.
