The Weir At New Village Arts Theatre

by The Editors on September 20, 2015

Theweir

The New Village Arts Theatre is happy to present The Weir, written by Conor McPherson, directed by Kristianne Kurner opening on October 10, 2015. But the even better news is that beginning October 2, 2015 NVA will be running some “pay-what-you-can” previews. Here’s what The Weir is about:

You can always count on a pub to be the one place you want to go where everybody knows your name — which is especially true for the townsmen who congregate at Brendan’s pub for their daily pint. However, all familiarity gets shaken up when a mysterious woman enters the bar and the men instinctively regale her with fascinating tales of spirits from the past and present. But one story proves to be much more chilling and real to the men than they could ever imagine. Winning the Laurence Olivier Award for “Best New Play,” this haunting production of The Weir makes its NVA debut!

TGIF Aug. 21: The Glenn Miller Orchestra

by The Editors on August 17, 2015

What better way to close out the City of Carlsbad’s TGIF Concerts in the Parks than with the blue-hair waving sounds of The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. Who is that? Well, maybe you should ask your grandmother (or great-grandmother?) and she’ll tell you that Glenn Miller’s Orchestra was the swingingest thing since the New York World’s Fair in 1939.

The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra is one of the most popular and sought after big bands in the world for both concert and swing dance engagements. The orchestra plays more than 300 live performances around the world each year and is pleased to close out the TGIF 2015 concert series.

We’re just hoping there will be more people in the audience than in the orchestra. Calavera Hills Community Park is located at 2997 Glasgow Drive, Carlsbad, California. If you don’t want to hassle with parking leave the car at Sage Creek High School and ride a shuttle. Shuttle service operates between 4:30 and 9 PM.

Variety called Louie’s Playboy Jazz Festival performance “… a triump… a sharp, uncluttered Jazz ensemble.”

TGIF July 31: Tommy Castro & The Painkillers

by The Editors on July 27, 2015

The City of Carlsbad’s TGIF Concert in the Parks returns to rock this Friday evening (July 31, 2015) with the R&B sounds of Tommy Castro & The Painkillers.

After years of playing guitar-driven blues and R&B backed by a tight horn section, Castro introduced The Painkillers live in 2012, creating a lean, mean four-piece lineup, with the drum chair now held by David Tucker. Fueled by Tommy’s voice and guitar plus bass, drums and keyboards, the band released the 45rpm single Greedy / That’s All I Got later that year (both songs are included as bonus tracks on the new CD). Greedy quickly became one of Castro’s most-requested songs. The Chicago Sun-Times calls his music “fiery and soul-drenched.”

Poinsettia Community Park is located at 6600 Hidden Valley Road, in Carlsbad, California. And remember to make parking easier, park at North Coast Calvary Chapel and get a ride to the park in a shuttle.
