Big Carlsbad Art Splash

by The Editors on September 26, 2010

Through The Looking Clothes

Thousands of people cruised Carlsbadistan’s Armada Drive on September 25-26, 2010 for the Annual Art Splash street art fair. While some vendors had hoped the good weather would bring more people over the two days, that didn’t stop those who were there from having a great time with jugglers, musicians, cake walks, politicians looking for votes, and most importantly, artists sharing their love of art with everyone.

Rotary Club of Carlsbad Candidates Forum

by The Editors on September 22, 2010

The Rotary Club of Carlsbad will apparently be hosting City Council candidates forum on Thursday night September 23, 2010 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Carlsbadistan. We’ve heard rumor that those who do not wish to dine with the Rotarians can simply attend the forum portion of the evening which reportedly begins at 7:20 PM.

As you might have noticed, the level of communication between Carlsbadistan.com and the Rotary Club of Carlsbad could easily be raised. And yes, we’re working on it.

New Village Arts Goes Into The Woods

by The Editors on September 22, 2010

CinandstepsistersCarlsbadistan’s New Village Arts Theatre will kick off the first musical they’ve ever produced when Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods directed James Vasquez opens Saturday, September 25, 2010.

Once Upon a Time… a baker and his wife embark on a quest into the woods, to fulfill the witch next door’s request and lift a curse that has kept them from having a child. Along the way, they meet Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), Cinderella, two handsome princes and a motley assortment of other characters, all on quests of their own. Stephen Sondheim’s enormously popular musical answers the question of what really happens after “happily ever after” and includes some of the most beautiful songs in the musical theatre canon, including “Giants in the Sky”, “Children Will Listen” and “No One Is Alone.”

A cocktail party with the director and the cast will be held directly following the opening show. Click here to buy tickets online or for more information click the link.

Susan Weller Opening At Ivanffy-Uhler Gallery

by The Editors on August 20, 2010

WellerOn Thursday, August 26, 2010 Carlsbadistan’s Ivanffy-Uhler Gallery will be hosting an opening reception for artiest Susan Weller.

Weller’s paintings are both reflections of her life spent near the ocean and of her travels in Europe. Weller lives and works in Laguna Beach and in Verona, Italy, in a 12th century palazzo, where she is inspired by the country’s rich cultural and architectural history. Art critic Roberta Carasso, Ph.D., says, “The artist is drawn to generations of history embedded in the facades” of ancient buildings. “Layers of generational narratives, each with its own mystical essence, find their way into her art.”

Those who enjoy the kind of art that hangs in the lobbies of some of the world’s largest corporations will not want to miss this.

TGIF August 20: Earl Thomas

by The Editors on August 16, 2010

Earl ThomasHard to believe it’s over, but what better way to shut down the 25th anniversary season of Carlsbadistan’s TGIF Jazz in the Park than with the Blu-ro-so-funk of Earl Thomas playing Calavera Park.

His 1991 major label debut Blue . . . Not Blues blended the sensuality of Stax soul with the grittiness of modern electric blues, but the real indication of his talent is the power of his voice and his knack for crafting memorable contemporary blues and this is what made Earl Thomas one of the most highly respected blues artists in the world.

And he’s playing Carlsbadistan. Earl Thomas is your last chance this summer. He is likely the best vocalist to Carlsbadistan in years. Don’t put TGIF Jazz in the Park off any longer. Just go. Show starts at 6 PM.
