Mid-Morning Head-On Collision

by The Editors on December 15, 2007

The driver of a silver Chevrolet pickup truck swerved into oncoming traffic and head-on into a Time-Warner cable van Friday morning at 11:15 on Avenida Encinitas near San Carlos Street according to a story on CBS8.com.

Officers were actually on their way there. Another driver had just placed a call to them. . . . “Apparently, the pickup truck was being followed from Leucadia by a witness who saw the car was swerving on the road, driving erratically,” Carlsbad police spokesperson Chad Oppenheim said.

Both drivers were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa Opening Soon

by The Editors on December 15, 2007

Image001-1

When development is done well, it’s all good. And the new Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa, which opens in February 2008, appears to be doing it right. Tucked in behind Legoland and right next to The Crossings Golf Course, the hotel will have 350 guest rooms, 13 suites and 25,000 square-feet of meeting space, a new spa and a restaurant. While The Ocean Pearl Spa sounds great, we’re looking forward to the Twenty/20 Grill. Check this:

The airy 5,200 square-foot destination restaurant will offer artisanal vineyard California cuisine in an elegant, yet casual setting with 1,700 square-feet outdoor dining patio and sweeping views of the Carlsbad coast. With its globally inspired menu anchored in locally grown, organic products, sample dishes planned for the winter season include Char-grilled Lamb Loin with a roast red grape sauce, crispy potato croutons, and a fresh wild berry salad; and the Local Growers Vegetable Risotto, a vegetable lover’s paradise with char-grilled tomatoes, baked zucchini, eggplant, warm fennel and corn.

Great, now we’re hungry and we have to wait two months. Hopefully it will be as good as it sounds. We’ll let you know. The Sheraton is accepting reservations for arrival on or after March 15, 2008. Sounds like a great place for a big wallet spring break.

Okay, How About One More?

by The Editors on December 13, 2007

Taylor Knox was eliminated today during his round two heat against Kauai’s Roy Powers. So that’s it for Taylor in this contest, and that might just be it for our 2007 Billabong Pro Pipeline Masters coverage as it looks like it’s going to be pretty flat for the remainder of the waiting period.

[Editors’ Note: Here, we even have some video from day three, but don’t tell anyone.]

101 Bandit Suspect Caught in NorCal

by The Editors on December 13, 2007

A man police suspect of being the 101 bandit who they believe is responsible for at least one Carlsbad bank robbery on November 15 and 15 others since July may have been caught near Marysville, California yesterday.

Arthur Cheney, 64, of Napa was arrested at 4:20 p.m. after a California Highway Patrol officer saw him driving on Highway 70 in a 2002 Mercedes CL 500 with a paper license plate, CHP Sgt. Scott Klocker. A car matching that description has been linked to bank robberies from Palm Desert to the Bay Area, including San Jose and Palo Alto.

Apparently, when the CHP pulled him over and searched the car they found a “sticky note” with a handwritten message: ‘Robbery – 100s and 50s only.’ Officer Klocker joked, “We call that a clue.”

Rock ‘n Roll Founder Ike Turner Dies

by The Editors on December 12, 2007

RocketAccording to a story in the North County Times Ike Turner died today at 11:38 AM in his San Marcos home. He was 76 years old.

A groundbreaking guitarist, pianist and bandleader who helped pioneer both early rock ‘n’ roll and modern rhythm and blues, Turner’s reputation was tarnished by his drug addiction, stint in prison and allegations on film and in print that he abused Tina Turner, his famous former wife.

We know he lived in San Marcos, but we used to see his Benz (with personalized plates) around town so much that we’ve made Ike Turner an honorary Carlsbadistanian and we’re sad to see the musical genius go. He will be missed.

A Little Of What We Saw Yesterday. . .

by The Editors on December 12, 2007

Other than the fact that Taylor Knox got fourth place in his first heat, this really has nothing to do with Carlsbadistan. But we shot it, so peep it if you want. It’s day one of the 2007 Billabong Pro Pipeline Masters from the North Shore of Oahu.

Lr1000587470-1On the Twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a ocean front lot on the beach at Terramar. . .

We’ve written about Carlsbadistan’sLand of Gold” before. It’s a street called Tierra Del Oro and we thought it had been completely built out, but it appears that the Riley’s have decided against building their 6,215 square foot Terramar dream home (which was approved by Coastal Commission and the City of Carlsbad). Instead, they’re selling the empty lot along with all the plans and permits for a sweet $6.15 million.

Approx 60′ Beach frontage. Approved plans for a magnificent home (three story from the beach side) with an elevator, a phenomenal master suite, three additional bedrooms, five baths, office, retreat, gym, music room, great room, game room, full bar, gourmet kitchen with a walk-in refrigerator, two car garage and direct beach access on a double cul-de-sac street.

Last minute shoppers should contact Tom and Peggy Cozens and ask them about MLS listing #071085779. It really is the perfect stocking stuffer.

City To Spend $200,000 On Consultants

by The Editors on December 11, 2007

We like the Encina Power Station Smoke stack. But NRG‘s new plans for the location do not require water-cooling or a 400 foot tall stack. But they do require approval from the City of Carlsbad. So what should the City of Carlsbad do about these new plans? According to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times, they’ve decided to spend money on consultants.

. . . the City Council agreed to spend $200,000 on outside consultants to investigate a new Encina power plant proposal that’s been submitted to the state Energy Commission.

Here is some free consultation: we for one are not interested in any NRG plans that call for 100 foot tall smoke stacks. Seriously, who is that going to impress?

Angulo3

To be clear: we are in no way suggesting that you should gift one of these boards to anyone who is going to ride it in Carlsbad. Oceanside is fine. But not Carlsbad, please. That said, Legends Surf has some great stand up paddling boards and paddles in stock. In fact, they are becoming SUP central it seems.

The board we think the SUP in your family might like is the Angulo Model . It’s 11′ 9 ” x 31 ” x 4.25″ with clear top and bottom, plus graphics, 2 +1. Fins and pad included. It’s great for the big man in anyone’s life. And right now it’s only $1950.00. But again, please, make sure the person you buy this board for only surfs it in Oceanside. Thank you.

Legends Surf, 2658 State Street, 760/730-9071.
