Carlsbadistan Star Of High Gas Prices Story

by The Editors on June 4, 2008

2008-06-01T234145Z 01 Nootr Rtridsp 2 Business-Markets-Oil-Col-1When the Reuters new agency sent out their “rising oil price” wire story to the world they were kind enough to include a photo showing what many in the US consider outrageously high gas and diesel prices. That photo was taken in at our local Carlsbadistan Exxon station. Because we’re probably paying more for gas that everyone else in the nation.

No, we don’t consider it a blessing.

Same-Sex Couples Chomping At The Bit

by The Editors on June 4, 2008

If the California Supreme Court decision stands then on June 17, 2008 same-sex marriages licenses will be streaming out all over the state, according to a story in Today’s Local News. This comes as great news for a long-time Carlsbad couple.

Carlsbad residents Linda Sanders and Evelyn Thomas, who will celebrate their 18th year as a couple June 30, plan to get their marriage license in San Marcos on June 17. The couple plan to be among the first to wed under California’s new same-sex marriage ruling. . . . “We’re going to get our license the very first day they’ll let us,” Sanders said. “We figured that we should get it done right away because we know there’s going to be an effort to stop it.”

Eighteen years is long time to wait to make it legal. We guess we’ll see what happens. There are some pretty rich people against it.

At $882 an ounce, gold mines are looking better and better, aren’t they. Follow the jump for all the details.

Free Beer Money For Carlsbad College Students

by The Editors on June 3, 2008

Anheuser Busch BeerCarlsbadistan students who are planning on getting a post-secondary degree in hospitality and tourism management can apply with the Carlsbad Convention and Visitor Bureau for their chance to win one of three cash scholarships worth approximately $1,300.

These scholarships are a long time coming,” commented Kurt Burkhart, the bureau’s Executive Director. “Our desire has always been to do this in partnership, and we feel fortunate to have found a partner with the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and, to the best of our knowledge, we’ll be the first tourism bureau in San Diego County to directly award cash scholarships to students.”

With the cost of college these days, it looks like these scholarships could go a long way toward the average college student’s beer tab, at least for a quarter. Entries are due July 15, 2008. Follow the jump for all the details.
