San Diego Union-Tribune art critic Robert Pincus has written an overview of Carlsbad resident Kennth Capps‘ solo sculpture show Metered which is currently running at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery.
On the gallery floor are sculptures like “Emit” (1984) and “Convert B” (1984) that evoke missile heads or bombs. Capps’ four “Equator” works (1996-2007), are inspired by celestial bodies; each resembles a fragment of a planet with a broad ring like Saturn’s and there is one of them in each corner of the room. Some floor works, like “Axis 4” (1984) – a ribbed semi-spherical contour – are solid forms, while others such as “Purge A” (1988) are hollow and you can peer within. Capps mostly uses muted color but he isn’t beyond using a brilliant color, as with the red in “Equator 337°” which works so well that you wish for a couple more flourishes in the exhibition.
Metered runs through August 17 and admittance is free at the Cannon Gallery at 1775 Dove Lane.

Carlsbadistan’s J.P. Theberge, who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident in 1997, brought home a gold medal for Team USA in the Vancouver BG Triathlon World Championships amputee division held June 6, 2008.
The race itself went great, even though they ended up shortening the swim by 400 meters due to hypothermia in the women’s race the day before. I was actually 15th out of the transition area and started reeling people in one by one on the hilly bike course. I averaged 23 mph on the bike and finally overtook the number two guy on the last loop. . .

A Carlsbadistan reader did exactly what we should have been doing all along. He walked right in the back door of the new Apple Store at The Forum Shopping Center, snapped a few pictures, and did a little reporting.
The only slight delay in construction is they are waiting for tile and panels. That was the information the construction supervisor gave me. He asked me who I was I said I was from the Cupertino office, what he made of that was strictly his interpretation.
We wish those panels and tile would hurry on up.

Carlsbad’s own fine food company The Carlsbad Gourmet will be featured on the first episode of the Food Network’s brand new show Road Tasted with the Neely’s.
The new program is a mix of two shows from last season Road Tasted and Down Home with the Neelys. Now, rather than cooking at home Pat and Gina Neely are hitting the road “in search of the best local, handcrafted foods along with finding all sorts of people, personalities and adventure along the way.” Their first stop: Carlsbad to spend the day with Russ Bruhn in the Carlsbad Strawberry Fields.
Airing July 13, 2008, the show will feature the Carlsbad Gourmet’s Strawberry Jalapeño Spread along with their “Award Winning Ruby Red Strawberry BBQ Sauce.” Not to mention amazing views of both the Strawberry Fields and The Flower Fields.
It’s nice to see Carlsbadistan getting a little national recognition for fine flavors. Now, we just need to taste some to see if it really lives up to the hype.

San Diego Union-Tribune photographer Crissy Pascual caught 8 year old Carlsbadistan ripper Brock Crouch during the Free Flow Tour amateur skateboard contest at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA in Encinitas on Sunday. According to the story more than 70 skateboarder competed in the contest.

On Sunday June 29, 2008 the National Football League kicked off it’s 12th Annual Rookie Symposium right here in Carlsbad. That means that 252 new NFL players are in Carlsbadistan for four days to learn everything they can about what it means to be a professional football player.
On Monday the players will hear presentations on substance abuse (particularly steroid policy and awareness) and financial advice. Tuesday, the focus is a youth football clinic and player conduct. The symposium concludes Wednesday with a sex education guide (particularly an HIV overview) and life skills emphasis.
Sounds like helpful info. Hopefully, some of our kind Carlsbadistan manners will rub off on them. The conference ends tomorrow (July 2, 2008)

We mentioned the Cadillacs of Comedy a few weeks ago, but we had no idea how big they were getting. The letters on the marquee must be at least a foot tall.
