City Council Scrambles Against NRG’s New Plant

by The Editors on October 17, 2009

Industrial-TmThis Tuesday, October 20, 2009 the Carlsbadistan City Council will be considering the passage of a moratorium on coastal power plants to prevent NRG from putting in its proposed second power plant on the Encina Power Station property, according to a release sent out by the City of Carlsbad.

If passed, this action would prohibit a second power plant proposed by NRG, requiring the state to overrule the city if the plant is to be approved. . . Also under the resolution, no development application will be accepted, processed or approved that would expand the size, location, generating capacity or use of the Encina Power Station for the duration of the moratorium. . . . The resolution under consideration would establish an emergency ordinance on the building or expanding of power plants on Carlsbad’s coast, meaning it would go into effect immediately and could last for up to two years.

Anything that slows the industrialization of the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon is fine by us, but why stop at the power plant? Why not throw in a little rider prohibiting a desalination plant as well? No harm in that really.

Follow the jump for the entire release.

Border Patrol Snags Another Ponto Panga

by The Editors on October 14, 2009

Looks like the U.S. Border Patrol is making some headway against the coyotes running illegal immigrants into Ponto Landing on what seems to be a monthly schedule, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune. They caught another panga on October 13, 2009.

U.S. Border Patrol agents patrolling the shoreline saw the panga boat about 3:30 a.m. Agents for U.S. Customs and Border Protection then intercepted the boat about eight miles west of La Jolla and found the two men aboard. . . The men, ages 29 and 49, are Mexicans who were in the country illegally, officials said. . . An investigation determined that the men had earlier dropped off six people at the Carlsbad beach. Two of the six were later apprehended.

Guess we’ll have to see if they catch the next scheduled drop the second week in November. . .

Carlsbadistan’s Sweat Lodge Disaster Connection

by The Editors on October 14, 2009

Sweatx-LargeJames Arthur Ray, the self-help author whose five-day “Spiritual Warrior” retreat at Arizona’s Angel Valley Retreat Center resulted in two deaths and 19 other injuries during a “spiritual cleansing” in a “crudely built sweat lodge,” is apparently based in Carlsbadistan, according to a story in USA Today.

Ray’s company, James Ray International, is based in Carlsbad, Calif. His publicist, Howard Bragman, declined to comment Friday and didn’t return a call Saturday from The Associated Press.

The victims had reportedly paid between $9,000 and $10,000 for the five day retreat. Apparently that fee included a day-and-a-half of no food. According to the story it will be between three and four weeks before they know if criminal charges will be filed.

Carlsbadistan Street Faire November 1

by The Editors on October 14, 2009

Cbstreetf08 16Join 100,000 of your closest friends on Sunday November 1, 2009 as the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce hosts the 35th Annual fall Carlsbad Street Fair in the Village of Carlsbadistan. Browse through acres and acres of items from over 900 venders at “the nation’s largest one day faire.”

Find items that you can find at any other street faire in North America. Buy stuff that will make you wonder what you were thinking when you finally get it back into your home. But that’s not the fun of street faire. The fun is just mingling with your friends an neighbors on streets void of traffic.

“The faire is a social happening of major proportions. With almost more attendees than Carlsbad residents, the event nearly doubles the population of Carlsbad for one day,” said Ted Owen, president and chief executive officer of the Carlsbad Chamber. “Fun, food and great prices are the faire’s main ingredients.”

And we have to agree with Ted. We’ll see you there.

Carlsbad Vandals Cause $150,000 In Damages

by The Editors on October 9, 2009

Vandals hit a empty city building at the 24-year-old sewage treatment plant on Tamarack, according to a Michael Burge story in the San Diego Union-Tribune and now the City of Carlsbadistan is offering a $10,000 reward for the arrest of those responsible.

vandals. . . ripped up the walls and ceilings of vacant city buildings and stuffed the debris into a sewer main, causing a minor spill and major damage. . . City Public Works Director Glenn Pruim said city crews were at the plant Sept. 29 working on something else when they heard a noise, investigated and saw raw sewage surging out of a manhole. . . They contained the spill so it didn’t overflow into a storm drain and find its way to a stream or lagoon, Pruim said. . . The city estimates the damage at $150,000.

Not to blame this on “the kids,” but maybe if the City built a proper skateboard park the youth of Carlsbadistan would have something a little more productive to do in their spare time.

Zombie PizzaCarlsbadistan’s favorite local iPhone applications developer Appy Entertainment has just released its newest game, Zombie Pizza for the iPhone.

The basic premise of the game is that flesh eating Zombies have taken over. As a player you have managed to become an apprentice pizza chef whose main goal is to keep the hungry zombies at bay with your pies.

Make the brain, stomach, and other body part covered creations fast enough and the zombies will stay full and leave your corpus intact. Take too long, and you become the lunch instead of the pizza.

Zombie pizza is a light hearted, easy to play, addictive game that has been a hit with the kids as well the adults. The progressively challenging, and funnier levels keep the attention for more than the first round. At 99 cents it’s a bargain and easy to throw on the iPhone for some quick entertainment.
