4th Annual Carlsbad Beach Fest June 4

This Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 8 AM to 3 PM we’ll be joining the City of Carlsbad Beach Preservation Committee. California State Parks, the Friends of Cardiff & Carlsbad State Beaches, and the Carlsbad Village Athletic Club for the 4th Annual Carlsbad Beach Fest at Frazee State Beach at Pine Ave. You probably should, too.

“The goal of the event is to highlight our coastal playground as an irreplaceable resource, and to show appreciation for its beauty and value,” said Tammy Urie, special events director for the Carlsbad Village Athletic Club which is helping to organize this year’s event.

Celebrating recreation paradise through good beach stewardship

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The City of Carlsbad Beach Preservation Committee invites residents to celebrate and enjoy the beauty and value of Carlsbad beaches at the fourth annual Carlsbad Beach Fest from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at Frazee State Beach at Pine Avenue. One mile of beach from Tamarack Avenue to Pine Avenue will provide exciting sports activities, live entertainment, and opportunities for the public to participate in beach and ocean clean-up. The event is presented by the California State Parks in partnership with the Carlsbad Village Athletic Clubs (CVAC), the Friends of Cardiff & Carlsbad State Beaches, and the City of Carlsbad Beach Preservation Committee to benefit Carlsbad’s State Beach Parks and the Carlsbad community.

“The goal of the event is to highlight our coastal playground as an irreplaceable resource, and to show appreciation for its beauty and value,” said Tammy Urie, special events director for the Carlsbad Village Athletic Club which is helping to organize this year’s event.

Mayor Matt Hall will help kick off festivities by sending runners and walkers on a first-time ever, low tide race on the sand. Other featured activities and attractions include:

  • A massive beach clean-up with hundreds of volunteers;
  • Free sports clinics and amateur play in paddleboard, surfing, kayaking, beach volleyball, beach soccer, ultimate frisbee, and Zumba fitness;
  • Kite flying contest;
  • Pro AVP Beach Volleyball players battle it out at a King & Queen Tournament near Pine Avenue;
  • Gigantic sand sculptures created by U.S. Champions Archisand reflecting this year’s theme, Recreation Paradise through Good Beach Stewardship.
  • Educational booths and green vendor displays highlighting beach and environmental stewardship
  • Live music at four stages from such notable bands as The Professors, Paddy’s Pig, Jerome Dawson & Wazabe Blue, Fula Bula, and exciting entertainment from Polynesian dance & drum group, Varua Tahiti e’.

On the same day the city will host a cleanup of invasive plants along the trail at the north shore of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon located between Carlsbad Boulevard and the coastal rail line, in partnership with the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation.
