Carlsbad Chamber CEO Interviewed

by The Editors on November 4, 2007

According to an interview in the San Diego Union Tribune, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce has the “second largest chamber membership in San Diego County and the 10th-largest in California.” We did not know that. In fact, we didn’t even know that Ted Owen was the president and chief executive officer or that he had a staff of 15 employees. But we’re learning all kinds of things today thanks to Mr. Owen:

This is a very civil city that has $80 million in the bank. We had an $8 million surplus at the end of 2006, and the city pretty much likes to listen to its residents and provide them things. . . They wanted a golf course; we built one. They wanted an aquatic park; we’re building one. They wanted (a water desalination plant); we’re building one. Those things cost money, and a city with wealth and that’s well-run can do that.

Hey Ted, we’d like a proper skateboard park near the Village. Are you building that?

You built Us a golf course my ass…you built the affluent Carlsbad “newbies” and tourist a golf course.

An Aquatic Park…who really wanted that? I guess its a great place to send the nanny and kids when mommy is getting her face lift and daddy is at the public golf course!

Fortunately the desalination plant won’t be built here. We have the lagoon the thank for that, not the council!

Now for you Mr. Owen, we want a skatepark in, or very near, the village of Carlsbad!!! Skateboarding was banned iin the late 90s in this area but nothing was built to replace the streets! Don’t give me that waste of concrete off Faraday. First, an architect who thinks of a skateboard as that thing that hovers in Back to the Future designed the park. Unfortunately skateboards don’t work that way! Lets make a park designed by someone who understands skateboarding and has stood one on before!

The location is key. Kids skated in the village because it was skating distance form their school or home. Now why make a park 5 miles away. I have seen kids walking up El Camino on the side of the road…is that safe!!!! I know the council is completely stupid, but why the current location….hmmmm……kids will be kids and no kid likes wearing pads when they skate. The current location of the park (snug between the police station and fire station) sure does make it convenient for police to circle the block stopping at their will to ticket a few harmless teenagers.

hmmmm…Atleast these tickets bring revenue to the city and those hard at work police officers are making a last minute stride to meet their monthly quota!

Oh, guess what…the current skatepark is going to be leveled for….drum roll… a police training facility…..typical!

I propose a park be built on Buena Vista Way between Valley St and Highland. There is a large open space enclosed by embankments. Kids have skated here for over 10 years. The only current use is to store unwanted city structures. The location is near residential and school sites and would be ideal for CHS skate PE.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
