The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce is inviting everyone in Carlsbadistan to celebrate as the McClellan-Palomar Airport commemorates its 50th anniversary on June 27, 2009. The event, which is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature “vendors, food and entertainment for the whole family.”

With 215,847 takeoffs and landings in 2007 by private planes, corporate jets and commuter airline flights, McClellan-Palomar is one of the busiest single-runway airports in the country. There are 344 aircraft based at the airport, 83 of which are jets or jet props. . . “Between public and private investment, more than $100 million has been put into McClellan-Palomar Airport over the last five years,” said Airport Manager Willie Vasquez. “We’re having this event because we want the public to come and see what has been done.”

Orion Aviation will offer 30-minute Discovery Flights of the coast and scenic area surrounding the airport in a Cessna 172 with a qualified flight instructor for $25 per person. Barnstormers also will offer rides for a price in its 1927 Travel Air biplane.
