Cottingham Named Boys & Girls Club Event Chair

Honorary ChairThe Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad has announced that Life Technologies‘ Chief Legal Officer John Cottingham has been named the honorary chair for the clubs’ Havana Nights Annual Gala, according to a press release.

Mr. Cottingham has served as the chairperson of his company’s annual Global Volunteer Day, in which Life Technologies allows all of its employees worldwide to participate in volunteer activities arranged at the local level. Through this activity he became involved in the Boys & Girls Club, and has spearheaded the company’s initiatives to support the Club. . . In addition to the ever-increasing activities of Global Volunteer Day, Life Technologies has also secured the naming rights for the Learning Center at the new Bressi Ranch Clubhouse currently under construction. “There is a great natural synergy between our company, which has scores of bright, talented, highly educated employees who are eager to share what they know. The kids down the street at the Boys & Girls Club are equally eager to learn,” said Cottingham. “Our Foundation seeks out opportunities to assist with science education internationally, so it just makes sense for us to connect with these kids right here in our backyard.”

(Carlsbad, CA, August XX, 2009) – John Cottingham, Chief Legal Officer of Life Technologies, was recently named the honorary chair for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s “Havana Nights” Annual Gala.

Mr. Cottingham has served as the chairperson of his company’s annual Global Volunteer Day, in which Life Technologies allows all of its employees worldwide to participate in volunteer activities arranged at the local level. Through this activity he became involved in the Boys & Girls Club, and has spearheaded the company’s initiatives to support the Club.

In addition to the ever-increasing activities of Global Volunteer Day, Life Technologies has also secured the naming rights for the Learning Center at the new Bressi Ranch Clubhouse currently under construction. “There is a great natural synergy between our company, which has scores of bright, talented, highly educated employees who are eager to share what they know. Prior to his present post, Mr. Cottingham served as General Counsel of Invitrogen and one of its predecessor companies since 1996. From 1988 through 1995, he served as an international corporate attorney in Washington DC office of Fulbright and Jaworski LLP. Although he was not a member of a Boys & Girls Club as a child, he did spend lots of time each summer in a similar environment at the summer camp his father ran in western North Carolina. “If I can make a small contribution that allows children to engage in wonderful activities in a safe, nurturing environment, then that brings me great satisfaction,” stated John. “I think it’s an important part of our culture that we generate opportunities like this to help youth develop. And besides, it’s a lot of fun!”

The “Havana Nights” Annual Gala will take place at Four Seasons Resort Aviara on Saturday, August 29, at 5:00 p.m. More than 500 business and community leaders are expected to attend this social event of the season complete with lavish cuisine, lively entertainment provided by the Mar Dels, and an exhilarating auction. The event is projected to raise $200,000 in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s proven after-school programs. Havana Supper Club attire/black tie is optional.
