During the summer the the Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team, The Lancer Dancers, placed first in their home qualifying routine at the Elite UDA Dance Camp held at the University of San Diego. That gives them the opportunity to compete in the UDA National Championships in Orlando, Florida February 5-7, 2009. Now they just have to raise the money to get the entire team there. But they have an idea. . .

The Lancer Dancers are teaching dance classes for children in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade at CHS. . . The Kid’s Classes will begin September 23rd for and run for 10 weeks. Dance students will learn dances, technique, and have a chance to perform at the Lancer Dancer Showcase in December at the Carlsbad Performing Arts Center as a “Jr. Lancer Dancer.”

Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team Qualify for Shot at National Title

The Carlsbad High School Varsity Dance Team, The Lancer Dancers, received FIRST PLACE for their Home Qualifying Routine at the Elite UDA Dance Camp held this summer at the University of San Diego (USD). Their first place award qualified them to compete at the UDA National Championships in Orlando, Florida this coming February 5th-7th at the Walt Disney Resort. This national competition is broadcast live on ESPN2. Last year over 300 teams competed for the championship in front of a live audience of 10,000 people. The Lancer Dancers have won this competition 7 times in the past, but not last year. This has inspired the team to work even harder. “We have a very strong team this year and we really want that national title and the white jackets more than ever. We work hard everyday to achieve this goal and believe we can do it”, said last year’s team captain, Rylee Blair.

Before the girls can bring back a national title they need to raise significant funds for airfare, hotel, costumes, and competition fees. The team is seeking donations, sponsorships, offering children’s dance classes, and holding other fundraising events such as a golf tournament on October 19th, 2009 at the El Camino Country Club.

The Lancer Dancers are teaching dance classes for children in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade at CHS. The dance students get a unique opportunity to learn from and work with members of the varsity dance team that in many cases they have seen perform at community events and games. “I remember watching the Lancer Dancers perform when I was little and thinking ‘Wow! I want to do that’. It inspired me to try harder and get better”, said Lancer Dancer, Camille Posard. The Kid’s Classes will begin September 23rd for and run for 10 weeks. Dance students will learn dances, technique, and have a chance to perform at the Lancer Dancer Showcase in December at the Carlsbad Performing Arts Center as a “Jr. Lancer Dancer”. Team member Lani Yamanaka said,” The reason I love to teach the kids classes is seeing how excited they are to dance and be with us. They will randomly run up say hi and give you a hug. It’s fun.”.
