Carlsbadistan Keeping Sheriff Chopper Busy

by The Editors on September 9, 2009

The San Diego Sheriff’s helicopter was busy again of the skies of Carlsbad this morning (September 9, 2009) after someone was reportedly trying to break into cars on the 7200 block of Columbine Dr, just south of Aviara Parkway, according to a story in the North County Times.

No suspect was found and no thefts were reported, though police found several cars had been opened. . . A person with a flashlight was reportedly looking inside cars in that area about 1:30 a.m., the dispatcher said.

Nice work from whoever called the Police.

Chopper was over our house for about 45 min, and when I called the PD to find out what was going on, they said they were after someone breaking into cars in the area, and that we should remain indoors because they had tracking dogs out in the area. Chopper finally seemed to corner someone in the backyard of a neighbor’s house 2 doors down, and I heard over the helo’s loudspeaker, “this is the Carlsbad police dept. We see you. Come out with your hands up. Come out with your hands up or we are sending in the dog.”. 30 sec later, the chopper suddenly left and I figured that the cops on the ground had detained the suspect. I called the PD the next day, and the dispatcher said that they had not caught the suspect. Wonder what happened – usually once you have someone trapped in a backyard with a helo overhead, it’s pretty much game over.
