Man Dies In Semi Roll-Over At 78 & I-5

by The Editors on September 17, 2009

Img00230Hfghf.JpgA man in his 30s died this morning on the 78 connector to southbound Interstate 5 when a semi-truck trailer rolled over and crushed the Lexus he was driving, according to a story on NBC San Diego.

Witnesses told investigators that the Lexus was on the left side of the big rig, when the big rig started fishtailing and then rolled, crushing the car shortly before 7 a.m. . . . Here’s what is currently closed: Southbound I-5 to eastbound SR-78, Cassidy Street onramp to southbound I-5, Westbound SR-78 to southbound I-5.

From the photo we’re guessing they mean the East-bound 78 connector from the I-5 south.

So many times I’ve been on that ramp and had problems because motorists just don’t know how to merge courteously and cautiously. I wonder how this event played out.

It’s a terrible tragedy.

This is so sad. I am always afraid on this ramp and try to stay away from trucks going on this ramp. I hope CALTRANS considers this crash and has trucks use an alternate method to get onto the I-5 from 78. So many old onramps/offramps need to be updated. My prayers to the family.
