Carlsbad’s Bolt PR Wins Agency Of The Year

by The Editors on April 16, 2010

Bolt Pr - Influencesd AwardsCarlsbadistan’s power PR agency Bolt Public Relations (Caroline Callaway, Jesse Garner, Anne Carr, and Dana Flower pictured right) brought home the Agency of the Year Award at the first annual #influenceSD awards show held Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Anthology in downtown San Diego. Bolt beat out 29 other San Diego agencies for the recognition.

Caroline Callaway, president of Bolt PR, explained, “One element in the new media space that intrigues us is one that has been a driving force in our agency’s PR services: the opportunity like never before to have a voice, spread a message, and communicate to thousands, if not millions, in real-time and on your own terms. Rather than relying on the tabloids to tell a story or doing damage control through a press conference, influentials can broadcast the message on their own terms through their Twitter feed, blog or Fan Page.”

We know Bolt is for real because they found us on Twitter and have been in constant contact ever since. And we’re not the easiest to get along with. Seriously. Congrats, you deserve it. [click to continue…]

Carlsbad Library’s Spring Better Books Sale

by The Editors on April 14, 2010

Library Sale
Holly Moyer (left) and Kitty McMahon sort through books to find the best of the best.

The Friends of the Carlsbad Library volunteers are busy lately sorting and pricing books in preparation for the group’s Spring Better Books Sale, according to Publicity Chairman Tiffany Porter.

The sale is set for May 1-2, 2010 in the Community Room of the Georgina Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive. It will feature the best of the best – hundreds of like-new volumes that have been culled from donations to the Friends of the Library used book store throughout the year. . . . “These books deserve a special look,” said Marianne O’Leary, coordinator of the event, as she prepared items for the sale, assisted by volunteers Kitty McMahon and Holly Moyer.

Without giving too much away let us say this: we know there will be some amazingly good books in this sale because we nearly cried when we dropped some of them off.

For more information on the sale follow the jump.

TK Arnold Dreaming Of The Right Christmas

by Thomas K. Arnold on April 14, 2010

Img-1376I want to get the proverbial ball rolling early in Carlsbad for a massive, citywide Christmas-slash-“holiday” celebration centered on the beloved village.

I know December is a long way off. And I realize there are other, much bigger issues of civic concern, including building a long-promised pool complex, unraveling the Village H disaster, and reining in those overblown public-employee benefits.

But can’t we all take a little time out and stage something truly memorable? We’ ve already dropped the ball completely with the Fourth of July. Carlsbad has no parade and no public fireworks display. The closest thing we’ve got is fireworks at Legoland, and the citizens of Carlsbad are so hungry for something, anything even remotely celebratory, that each year they crowd into the business parks west of Legoland to watch the 10-minute show, creating a huge traffic jam.

Eliud Kipchoge Wins 2010 Carlsbad 5000

by The Editors on April 11, 2010

Crw 5410

It was windy on the Carlsbad 5000 course today as Ethiopia’s Ali Abdosh (2) and defending champ Bekana Dab (1) made Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge do all the work on the way down to the Tamarck Turn. They were probably hoping that it would tire him out. It didn’t.

Kipchoge was able to move out in front on the way back into town and by the time he made it to the turn onto Carlsbad Village Drive Kipchoge had the race well in hand. It wasn’t enough for a world road record, (Sammy Kipketer’s 13:00), but it was enough for the win and the confidence to know that the record is within reach.

Kenya’s Kipchoge Chases Carlsbad 5k Record

by The Editors on April 8, 2010

Cbad5K09 1-1

While the most fun comes from actually running in the Carlsbad 5000 with the civilians, there is a deep, deep elite field in this Sunday’s 25th running of the “world’s fastest 5k.” Two-time Olympic medal winner Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya will lead the field to take down Sammy Kipketer’s 13:00 road 5k record set in Carlsbad in 2000.

“Nobody has come close to Sammy’s mark since 2001,” recalls running historian Toni Reavis, 20-year broadcaster of the race. “That record has taken on a Beamon-esque stature in the ensuing years, especially Sammy’s first miles in under 4:00!”

The elites will start at 12:15 and be finished by 12:30 so if you want to catch them, be on the course. Click here for photos from last year, here for previous Carlsbadistan coverage, or follow the jump for more information.

Approximately 25 supporters and staff of Carlsbadistan’s Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park attended a group photo opportunity at 10 AM today (April 8, 2010) in front of the historic barn. Mick Calarco, Recreation Services Manager, says, “Thanks to everyone who came this morning to be in the photo. Historic sites like Leo Carrillo Ranch are special to our community. Through our restoration activities, we plan to continue our efforts to preserve the ranch as a beautiful piece of Carlsbad’s history for all to enjoy.”

The Goetz Seawall Stays!

by The Editors on April 8, 2010

Img 7993

In another example of how much easier it is to get permits for something that is already built, the Carlsbadistan Planning Commission last night (April 7, 2010) agreed four to one to grant the proper permits for the construction of the $750,000 seawall built last summer at Terramar, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.

The commission’s vote was 4-1, with Commissioner Bill Dominguez opposed and Commissioners Marty Montgomery and Michael Schumacher absent. The four commissioners who voted in favor of granting the permits mentioned both public safety and bluff conditions north of the new wall as reasons for their decision. . . “I don’t have any problem at all approving this … it really is a major public safety issue,” Commissioner Hap L’Heureux said, commenting that the public staircase invites people into an area where people are likely to end up right next to bluffs.

As much as we think people should ask before building gigantic walls on the coastline, the Goetz wall is about as nice a wall as can be imagined. If it causes all the sand to disappear (as opponents suggest) then we’ll all know last night’s decision was a bad one.
