The weekend, January 22-24, 2010, is Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon weekend in Carlsbadistan. For locals, it means that a few roads will be closed and we’ll have a lot of extremely fit guests in town. For the nearly 10,000 people who will be competing in the Marathon and Half Marathon it means running one of the most beautiful courses in the world.
Carlsbadistan’s world famous weight loss company Jenny Craig has been sued by Weight Watchers over what they say are “deceptive claims” about weight loss rates, according to a story on Brandweek.
The Jenny Craig TV spot in question claims that consumers, on average, lose over two times as much weight as those on Weight Watchers’ program. It shows actress/spokesperson Valerie Bertinelli in a lab setting surrounded by “scientists,” where she refers to the comparative results as the outcome of a “major clinical trial run by serious lab geeks.”
Weight Watchers says no such “clinical trial” was ever conducted.
“The trials cited by Jenny Craig (available on its website) are, in fact, two separate studies, conducted ten years apart for entirely different purposes than comparing the efficacy of the Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers weight-loss programs . . . The Jenny Craig ‘trials’ do not relate to WWI’s current offerings.”
Sounds like a heavyweight title match or something. . .
Each year the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce honors local businesses that rise above the rest at the Annual Business Awards Dinner. This year 52 businesses have been named as finalists in eight different categories.
“Businesses are the driving force of our area’s economy and we want to applaud the individuals and companies that have worked hard to keep our region on track during these difficult times,” said Toni Padron, the chamber’s executive vice president and chief operating officer.
The winners will be announced at the chamber’s Annual Business Awards Dinner Feb. 26 at the Four Seasons Resort Aviara, where former Channel 10 news anchor Carol LeBeau will be master of ceremonies. More than 500 people, including prominent and high-profile business leaders, elected officials and community members, will attend the awards dinner. News was leaked Wednesday afternoon that the former home of Cypress Gardens Adventure Park in Winter Haven, Florida has been purchased and will soon undergo restructuring to become the second LEGOLAND in the United States and just the fifth in the world. An official announcement is expected soon.
Guess we can start waving good-bye to all our East Coast Legoland visitors . . .The official press conference is tomorrow and the Governor of Florida is reportedly attending. (Follow the jump for the official press release)
On Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 7 PM Carlsbadistan’sMuseum of Making Music is presenting an evening of music and conversation in a special multi-media performance combining live music, discussion, and video presentation by two renowned American electronic music pioneers, composers, and synthesists: Dr. Herb Deutsch of Hofstra University and Dr. John Eaton of the University of Chicago.
The program starts with music and conversation by Dr. Deutsch (pictured above), whose serendipitous encounter and collaboration with Dr. Moog in 1964 launched the development of the Moog synthesizer and impacted the future of electronic and rock music in the U.S. Then, the evening will continue with a video-presentation and demonstration by Dr. John Eaton, MacArthur Fellow and recognized composer and performer of electronic and microtonal music.
If you, like us, prefer music of a more electronic nature, then this presentation should not be missed.
Valishia, the 32-year-old homemaker from Carlsbadistan who was hoping to win the heart of airline pilot Jake Pavelka on the ABC show The Bachelor: Wings of Desire, was cut from the herd last night according to a story on Reality TV World.
“All I know is I put it all out there and I put my life on hold to be here and I’m not the woman he wants,” said Valishia after her ouster. . . “I came with a heart that was open to finding someone that would love me the way I would love them. But I’m used to things not going my way, and that’s something I’ve learned to live with.”
We’re not exactly sure if we think more of her for not getting chosen or if she’s just the bottom of the bottom of the barrel.
It began pouring rain close to 4 PM today (January 18, 2010) and then just as quickly as it arrived, it was gone. And in its place a double rainbow over Carlsbadistan. By the time we got our camera out, it was gone. It’s that how it always works?
Don’t know why this seemed to appropriate today. . . maybe it’s because we’re all so bummed at The Chargers right now. If only they had “done their thing.”
Carlsbadistan-based trading card giant The Upper Deck is reportedly going to court on January 26, 2010 for allegedly counterfeiting 60,000 Yu-Gi-Oh! trading cards, according to a story in the North County Times.
In 2008, Konami Digital Entertainment, maker of the popular card game, brought a civil suit accusing Upper Deck of copyright infringement and counterfeiting their cards. Several Upper Deck executives refused to testify, but there was still undisputed testimony confirming that the company had manufactured fake cards, a statement from Konami said.
What a wonderful way to negotiate licensing fees. Nice that we tax payers can get involved, huh?
