North County Times writer Sarah Gordon reported yesterday that Carlsbadistan could have a new police chief real soon.
Spokeswoman Kristina Ray said 113 people applied for the job, some from within the department, but she said she could not disclose any details about the final field. . . A consultant hired by the city to conduct the search, Dave Morgan, a retired city manager from Anaheim, interviewed 20 candidates by phone in November. . . On Dec. 18, seven of those applicants were interviewed at the Carlsbad Safety Center by a panel of city and regional leaders, Ray said.
We can only hope for the best.

The Carlsbadistan City Council took a step in the right direction by voting not to add any amendments to the No Skateboarding laws that would include inlines and “similar forms of transportation,” according to a Randy Kalp story in The Coast News.
Jim Young, a 20-year resident of Carlsbad, told the council inline skating in the city is part of his lifestyle. The 51-year-old said restrictions on any type of skating or anyone outside exercising seem to be punishing people for getting outdoors and trying to take care of their health during a time when obesity is a national issue. . . “I feel a little disheartened that somebody from Oceanside comes to my city and tells me that I can’t take care of my health,” he added.
We agree. Next step for the council is to repeal the “no skateboarding” laws.

A tree that fell onto two southbound lanes of Interstate 5 yesterday (January 11, 2010) closed the Tamarack offramp and caused traffic to back up well into Oceanside, according to story on San Diego 6.
The California Highway Patrol reports the tree is blocked two right lanes of the freeway and the off ramp to Tamarack. . . The 50-foot tree was split in half and had to be cut up before the lanes could reopen.
It took workers until approximately 3:30 PM to get the tree out of the way and the lanes opened back to free-flowing traffic.
The Tamarack/I-5 zone certainly seems to get more than its share of traffic action, doesn’t it?

The Carlsbad Boys & Girls Clubs apparently played a large part in Gregorio’s Restaurant owner Greg Nelson’s life and because of that he has decided to donate the entire 2010 profits from the restaurant to the clubs, according to a post on the Gregorio’s Restaurant website.
People can’t always write checks, but we all need to eat,” Greg states simply. “Everyone does restaurant nights for charity; I took that idea and expanded it. . . .the Boys & Girls Club provided a place for my brother and me every day after school,” said Greg Nelson. “It’s critical the Club is able to continue offering the growing number of youth in our community a safe place that helps them grow into productive, responsible and caring results. I hope everyone will come to Gregorio’s for a delicious meal, and support this important project at the same time.”
Nelson hopes to raise $250,000 to help the club complete their new Bressi Ranch Clubhouse. Not a bad way to go. We hope Gregorio’s is extremely profitable this year, because the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Clubs can always use the money.

Pete Biltchik, a resident of Oceanside who claims to regularly walk the Carlsbadistan Seawall, has asked the City of Carlsbadistan to amend all the skateboard restrictions to include Rollerblades as well, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.
City officials are proposing to amend the city’s existing skateboarding restrictions to add Rollerblades, roller skates and “other similar forms of transportation.” The proposed amendment is tentatively scheduled to go before the City Council for a final vote next week.
Guess the only way to legally get around in Carlsbadistan will be in gas-guzzling, pollution spewing cars. What kind of message is the City Council trying to send?
