Carlsbad 5000 Not So Fast Anymore?

by The Editors on April 3, 2009

Crw-3374-Tm.Jpg

The Carlsbad 5000 bills itself as the “World Fastest 5K” but San Diego Union-Tribune writer Don Norcross has discovered that on the men’s side at least there hasn’t been a record broken in Carlsbadistan since 2000 when Sammy Kipketer’s ran the race in 13 minutes. Norcross asks the question, “Why the lull?”

“Because the world record was such an incredible performance that it was unfricking real,” said Tracy Sundlun, vice president of the Competitor Group, which owns the race. . . .By comparison, the women have continued taking an eraser to the record book. From 2002 through 2006, women broke the world record four times and tied it once. . . Kipketer’s 2000 mark was stunning, shattering the existing world mark by 12 seconds. Eighteen years old at the time, Kipketer took the first mile out in a shocking 3 minutes, 59 seconds. . . . As Kipketer steadily pulled away from the field, the late Mike Long, who recruited the elite athletes, made a prescient remark aboard the press truck. . . “He’s going too fast,” Long said. “How will we ever break this new record?”

Apparently, getting the fastest runners to race here is just too expensive. What happened to the joy of running?

The race takes place Sunday April 5, 2009 in The Village of Carlsbadistan. And who knows, maybe Maregu Zewdie can pull something out this year.

California Newspaperman Huttenhoff Dies

by The Editors on April 3, 2009

HuttenhoffCarlsbad resident and former newspaper publisher Robert L. Huttenhoff died on March 27, 2009, according to a story in The Salinas Californian. He was 88.

An advertising man when he first joined the newspaper’s staff in 1950, Huttenhoff lived in Salinas until 2001. After stepping down as publisher, Huttenhoff served another year as president of Salinas Newspapers Inc. before retiring in 1985.. . In retirement, Huttenhoff maintained a display of newspaper memorabilia that included his first Speidel paycheck. . . “He really was part of the growth of the industry,” daughter Roni Leonard said. “He was just an advertising sales person, then he was advertising sales director, then publisher. Salinas changed his life. He became way more than he ever thought he would be.”

Huttenhoff, who had just renewed his drivers license this year, had back surgery on March 6 and was in rehabilitation. His death was sudden and unexpected.

Carlsbad’s Hunter S. Thompson?

by The Editors on April 2, 2009

KlingWe’ve read Carlsbadistan Realtor Jim Klinge’s Bubbleinfo.com real estate blog in the past, but now a lot more people will after Klinge was written up in the LA Times as the “Hunter S. Thompson” of Real Estate.

Rather than downplay the greed and excess that caused the region’s travails, he revels in exposing them. . . . He surveys the wreckage with a pocket video camera, shooting footage of vacant, once-pricey houses turned into eyesores, voiced over with his deadpan narration. Then he posts them on his website, at www.bubbleinfo.com. . . They’re shaky, noisy clips full of coarse images and language. . . “Would you spend a million dollars for that house?” he says in one video, showing a two-story, boxy wreck with the rushing sound of a freeway in the background.

Klinge’s direct approach reportedly allowed him to sell 43 homes last year, most of the customers coming from his blog. While we’re not going to agree with the HST reference, it is refreshing to see a Realtor who at least appears to be involved in the business of selling homes.

Carlsbadistan’s Plain White T’s Merch Girl

by The Editors on April 1, 2009

Blurt2 Tease T245.JpgWhen the Plain White T’s are on the road, someone has to sell their T-shirts for them. For the past four years that has been Carlsbadistan’s Aileen Burns, according to a story in the San Diego Reader.

My responsibilities include picking designs, ordering, handling shipments on tour, selling merchandise during shows, settling with venues, and keeping track of stock,” says the 24-year-old Carlsbad resident. . . “The hardest thing about my job is uncertainty about our future scheduling. I can’t plan things very far in advance because we may or may not be on tour. It’s also difficult to have a personal life because you’re never in one place very long. And, as a female, sometimes the job can be tough, physically.”

So that’s where she’s been all this time. . .

Carlsbad Police vs. Skateboarders

by The Editors on March 31, 2009

Mar3109 58

Two skateboarders and a photographer were trying to get a little work done on Oak Ave. across from the Carlsbad Village Inn this afternoon around 2 PM and had barely gotten their lighting set-up before they were literally swarmed by Carlsbad Police Officers: three cars and a motorcycle responded to this crime (man-on-man coverage?).

The polite and cooperative skateboarders were told to put their hands behind their backs, told to spread their legs and then each of them were patted down, told to sit with their hands in their laps and then asked for their IDs. We do not believe any of the officers even saw either of the guys actually rolling on their skateboards.

While we’re happy that Carlsbadistan’s finest are so quick on the response, we kind of wish that conscientious, working skateboarders were given a little less vigorous treatment. Maybe simply being asked to leave by one officer would have been more appropriate. But then, that’s just us, and we probably know too much about Carlsbadistan’s importance in skateboarding history to really understand the reality of skateboarding behind a crime in our city.

Tony Hawk Skateboard Giveaway

by The Editors on March 31, 2009

4444644.JpgAbout an hour and a half ago (9:30 AM) Carlsbadistan-based pro skateboarder Tony Hawk Twittered a little message to his 200k followers: “Whatup Twit-talkers! I have a couple of complete skateboards to give away today. Stay tuned.”

Then at 10 AM he posted notes to the location of the first drop. It was on Palomar Oaks Way just south of Palomar Airport Rd. for the kids in the 760.

Sadly, we missed the Tweet by by 10:50 AM there was already a winner. It was Carlsbadistan’s KT Alch who said the location was “Right down the street from my office.”

Let the Twitter scavenger meme begin. . .and follow Tony because he says he’s got more skateboards to give away.

Joey Buran Inducted Into Surfing Hall of Fame

by The Editors on March 31, 2009

Winning-Pipe-Masters.Jpg

Joey Buran began surfing 1973 and went on to become one of the best surfers ever to come from Carlsbadistan. Now, 36 year’s later Joey is joining Quiksilver co-founder Jeff Hakman, Endlesss Summer director Bruce Brown, and surfer Pat O’Connell as inductees into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame on Friday, July 24, 2009 in front of Huntington Surf & Sport in Huntington Beach, California.

Buran began life landlocked in the mid-west (Cleveland), but moved to Carlsbad in 1972. He started surfing in 1973 at the age of 12 and by 1975 was already ranked as the top amateur surfer in California. After turning pro in 1978 Buran defeated Rabbit Bartholomew in his inaugural man-on-man event, won his first pro title in Oceanside and reached the final round of the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii defeating, among others, two-time reigning champion Rory Russell. He received the nickname “California Kid” from ABC’s Wide World of Sports.

Since then Buran has worked mostly as a pastor with Calvary Chapel and in 2007 became the head coach of the US National Surf Team. Congrats, Joey. You’ve done Carlsbad proud.

A Desal Message From Surfrider

by The Editors on March 30, 2009

Desal PlantThe Surfrider Foundation is opposed to the desalination plant that Poseidon Resources wants to put in Carlsbadistan’s Agua Hedionda Lagoon. In an email sent out to members today they said the following:

If Poseidon Resources is granted a final permit on April 8th for the Carlsbad Desalination plant, it will require ENORMOUS AMOUNTS of energy to make new water. If upgraded, the North County and South Bay Water Reclamation plants would require LESS THAN HALF THE AMOUNT of energy to make new water of the same quality – and dramatically reduce discharge of partially treated sewage to our local marine environment. . . Carlsbad Desalination would kill millions of fish and larvae each day. North County and South Bay Water Reclamation plants would kill zero fish and larvae per day.

The Surfrider Foundation is also encouraging everyone to read and sign Surfrider and Coastkeeper’s petition to help prevent Poseidon from building such a wasteful and destructive desalination plant.
