This week, test your senses with a blind flight and try to win a free tasting. Masquerading as bottles of malt liquor in simple, brown paper bags, the wines we choose will exhibit typical characteristics of common varietals. Swirl it, sniff it, sip it, and take your best guess. After the dust settles, we will take the best guesses and the winners will be rewarded with a deep sense of pride… and a free tasting.

Carlsbad Has Great Credit

by The Editors on March 26, 2009

Carlsbad CityStandard & Poor’s recently upgraded the City of Carlsbadistan’s credit rating from AA to AAA, according to a release sent out by the city.

Carlsbad, with a population that now exceeds 100,000, is located just 35 miles north of San Diego. Growth in the city has been in our view strong over the past five years with 10%-13% annual assessed valuation growth and good trends in local sales and transient occupancy tax taxes. We view the Legoland theme park and several resort hotels as strong tourism magnets. Also, we believe that strong financial management has resulted in healthy general fund surpluses and reserves, and a new formal policy requires and unreserved fund balance of no less than 30% of expenditures, although the city targets 40%-50%. The city actively monitors its budget and has made adjustments in fiscal 2009 to account for slowing TOT and sales taxes, in particular auto sales. We understand that adjustments are also being made in the 2010 budget to preserve its strong liquidity.”

Looks like City of Carlsbad Finance Director Lisa Irvine is doing a great job. Follow the jump for the entire press release.

Callaway Suing To Find Web Commenter

by The Editors on March 25, 2009

Callaway-LogoSomeone in the Yahoo Finance message boards has been sharing opinions about Carlsbad’s own golf giant Callaway Golf that Callaway doesn’t seem to like. So, the company filed a lawsuit in San Diego Superior Court to subpoena Yahoo Finance and require them to hand over information regarding the identity of the poster, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The lawsuit claims that, as a vendor or employee, the poster would have agreed not to disclose confidential information. It contends that around March of this year, the poster revealed information about the company’s operations. . . .Most posts on the Yahoo chat board for Callaway in the past two months don’t appear to reveal inside information. Several discuss the recent performance and attire of Phil Mickelson, a Callaway-sponsored player. . . One post is titled “Could golf get any more boring?”

It appears that the person they are hunting down is posting under the name “billclauson”. (Click here for a collection of his posts). And we have to agree, the posts seem pretty benign. Even this one from February 12, 2009:

I have been in and out of Callaway for many years. I just think the economy and the state of golf make any “golf” company a sell at this time. Callaway stock and golf related investments are going nowhere for the forseeable future. We may have seen the hayday for golf sometime back.”

Nothing that most people wouldn’t agree with there. Thankfully, Judge William Nevitt Jr. denied Callaway’s subpoena request, but it’s still nice to know that Callaway’s corporate lawyers have time to troll the Internet looking for fights.

Be Aggressive: Still Life With Pom Poms

by The Editors on March 25, 2009

Beaggressive1

A new play about cheerleaders opens at the New Village Arts Theatre on April 4, 2009. Be Aggressive, by Annie Weisman, is the story of Laura, a 17-year-old cheerleader whose life turns around when her mother is killed in a car accident, according to Dramatists.com.

. . . she is thrust into the role of caregiver for her precocious younger sister, Hannah, and her brittle father, Phil. Escape comes in the form of a ferocious fellow cheerleader. Leslie has a brochure about the Spirit Institute of the South, a two-week intensive where they can learn real cheer, the kind with Bible belt intensity. All they need is two weeks and a thousand bucks.

We won’t tell you the rest except to say that the story takes place in “Vista Del Sol” which most will recognize as San Diego. The play is directed by Kristianne Kurner and features NVA ensemble members Dana Case, Amanda Morrow, Daren Scott, Amanda Sitton and Rachael VanWormer with Caitlin Kunkle, Rachel Robinson and Alyssa Schindler.

Be Agressive runs April 4 to 26, 2009 nightly at 8 PM Thursday through Sunday with a matinee on Saturday at 3 PM click here for tickets. (Pay what you want previews are April 2 and 3)

Kite Surfing At Tamarack

by The Editors on March 22, 2009

Mar2109 93

With 20 to 25 mile per hours winds blowing sand down the beach, the conditions were perfect for kite surfing. This afternoon four guys were out ripping the waves and launching thirty feet into the air. The wind was blowing so hard that anything laid down on the sand would be buried in 10 minutes.

Happy 10th Birthday Legoland

by The Editors on March 21, 2009

Lego Bday

There’s nothing that makes us feel older than realizing the theme park we voted against has been in Carlsbadistan for 10 years already. March 20, 2009 was Legoland California’s official 10th Birthday in Carlsbadistan and while we may disagree with some of their recent expansion plans we have been amazingly surprised by what good neighbors they have been for the past decade. The place is virtually invisible and we like it that way.

Yesterday, in a private after-hours birthday party (which we were not invited to) workers busted out a 10-foot-tall birthday cake made entirely of cake and frosting. . . gotcha. No, the cake was not-surprisingly made entirely of Legos.

The model took 13 model builders weeks to create and features LEGO replicas of some of the Park’s most popular attractions sitting atop five tiers. Some of the models are animated including a moving pirate ship, turning dinosaur head, and illuminated candles. Guests can marvel at the giant LEGO birthday cake all summer long and view birthday-themed fireworks every Saturday.

Happy 10th Birthday Legoland. Don’t change a thing.

Callaway Golf Clothes From Perry Ellis

by The Editors on March 19, 2009

Callaway LogoCarlsbadistan’s golf company Callaway just signed a deal with Perry Ellis International to “design, manufacture and distribute Callaway-branded golf and sportswear,” according to a story in the Los Angeles Business Journal.

The partnership will get Callaway apparel in both deaprtment stores and sporting good stores. . . . “This relationship allows both companies to complement each other’s strengths and concentrate on their individual core capabilities. We see this as an incredible opportunity for us to help expand Callaway’s presence in the apparel market,” Oscar Feldenkreis, president and chief operating officer of Perry Ellis International, said in a statement.

For companies that don’t care all that much about how the clothing turns out, licensing is like free money. And right now, free money is good. Right?
