Carlsbadistan’s 99-year-old Army and Navy Academy is hoping to make some major renovations if they can get their plans approved by the city of Carlsbad, according to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times.
Officials with the private military high school want to tear down a number of aging buildings, give some other structures a face lift and add new dormitories, classrooms and sports facilities. Also planned is a pedestrian bridge across Carlsbad Boulevard, linking the main campus buildings with the sports fields.
Hurry up and get this approved. We’re tired of nearly getting hit every time we try to cross Coast Highway in front of the ANA campus.

The older we get the less bummed we are by news like this story about Warren Mingus, 88, and his wife from the San Diego Union-Tribune.
An elderly couple were found shot dead in their La Costa home Thursday in what appears to the county’s second murder-suicide case reported on the first day of 2009. . . . When police entered the house on Cannas Court, a short street less than half a mile from the intersection of Aviara Parkway and El Camino Real, just before 5 p.m., they found the bodies of an 88-year-old man and a 90-year-old woman, who had apparently died from bullet wounds, Carlsbad police said. . . An acquaintance of the pair told officers they were both in failing health and were suffering from numerous medical issues.
We just hope this is something they planned together. Our thoughts are with their families.

We just learned that the Carlsbadistan Police department has its own Gypsy hunter. According to a story in the North County Times Detective Patricia Parra (not pictured right) is looking into “eight reports of home and car repair scams from elderly victims since October.”
Parra, who specializes in fraud and crimes against the elderly, became aware of scams associated with ethnic Gypsies several years ago and says she has been expanding her expertise ever since, . . . She is quick to say that individuals should not stereotype or hold prejudices. . . . But she said she has found, through her investigations and arrests, that most home and auto repair scams that follow a specific pattern have been committed by people who consider themselves ethnic Gypsies.
Do not steal our tears, gypsy.

When Carlsbadistan’s Jennifer Cushman, 26, died May 19, 2008 after brain surgery at Tri-City Medical Center she helped save four people by donating her organs. Today, Cushman along with 37 other organ donors, are being “honored New Year’s Day with a floral tribute during the annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena,” according to a story in the North County Times.
Her organs helped save the lives of four people including a 14-year-old girl, said Sharon Ross, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit organ-donation organization, Donate Life California, and outreach manager for Donate Life’s chapter serving San Diego and Imperial counties.

Tomorrow night (January 2, 2008) Carlsbadistan’s finest will be holding a top secret sobriety check point on PCH just south of Tamarack, according to a press release in the North County Times. The spot is great because with water on both sides of the road there really is no way to escape.
People driving with open containers, registration problems, broken windshields, no front license plate, or bongs that take up half the front seat are discouraged from driving the coast between Cannon and Tamarack on Saturday night. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

Former Carlsbad City Council candidate Thomas K. Arnold weighs in on The Lossings-At-Carlsbad in today’s North County TImes.
Most sensible minds now agree that the golf course never should have been built. While it is true that taxpayers initially voted in favor of building a new municipal golf course in 1990, in light of all the delays and cost overruns, the matter really should have been brought back up to a public vote before construction actually commenced. . . . But that’s all water under the proverbial bridge, and the question now is what to do with this white elephant as it continues to bleed red ink.

To be honest, we love kicking off the New Year properly, however, we’ve never liked staying up ’till midnight to do it. That’s why for the past couple years we’ve been going to Legoland where we can watch the “brick drop” at 6 PM and be home before all the guns start going off.
Here’s what’s going on tonight:
Like the famous Times Square party, Kids’ New Year’s Eve features a countdown followed by a huge LEGO® brick dropping 22-feet into 2009 along with a dazzling fireworks display over Miniland. The event also features a special performance by kids’ pop-rocker Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players.
The celebration begins at 3 PM today and is included with a regular admission.
