In their efforts to do anything it takes to turn our lagoon into a desalination plant, Poseidon Resources has submitted to more “plans” to the California Coastal Commission on Wednesday, according to a story in the North County Times.
One plan is to reduce the desalination plant’s effect on ocean life. The second is to reduce the energy needed by the plant, which would in turn reduce generation of greenhouse gases. . . The plans were requested by the commission as a condition of approving the project, said Scott Maloni, a Poseidon vice president. . . . The Coastal Commission plans to meet sometime in early August in Oceanside to vote on the plan.
Nice to see Poseidon moving in the right direction.

We are continually amazed that Carlsbadistan’s action sports icon Tony Hawk can get out there and do a 24-city, 18-state Boom Boom Huckjam Tour in 38 days. But starting July 18 in San Antonio, Texas he’s going to do it again. By the time he gets to San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium on August 23, he will have already done 22 shows.
Huck Jam — which includes skateboarding, BMX bike jumping, freestyle motocross stunts and lots of loud rock and rap music — is now an independent show that uses outdoor venues. . . . “It was a huge thing, hauling all that equipment to arenas,” Hawk says. “The outdoor shows are more manageable.”
The man is obviously indefatigable. Be sure to watch the video at USA Today. And if you want to see the Huckjam at Qualcomm Stadium on August 23, 2008, click here for tickets.

Steve & Barry’s LLC, the 276-store Port Washington, NY-based clothing chain with a retail outlet in Carlsbad’s Westfield Plaza Camino Real, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today according to a story on NBCSanDiego.com.
“The generally poor environment for apparel retailers has reduced funding to our suppliers, landlords and to our company,” Steve Shore and Barry Prevor, co-founders and co-CEOs, said in a statement. “It has become increasingly difficult for us to continue operating normally under these circumstances.”
Good-bye big box chain store, have a nice day.

Few things in life are more fun than rolling your balls on the beach. And at 28th Annual Vigilucci’s Bocce Ball World Championships on Saturday July 12, 2008 at Del Mar’s Dog Beach that exactly what 300 people are going to do.
What’s the Carlsbadistan hook? This year the money being raised at the event is going to the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Club.
“It’s such an awesome event, North County’s cleaner answer to the Over-the-Line tournament in San Diego,” said Pat Maldi, marketing director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. “It’s a party on the beach —- bocce ball with sand, food and fun.”
The event is sold out, but the next best thing to playing with your balls is watching someone else play with theirs. Play begins at 8:15 AM and complimentary parking (and a Shuttle) is available at the Del Mar Racetrack. For more information click here to email Pat Maldi, or call (760) 729-0207 x303.

According to a report released today by the National Insurance Crime Bureau there were 28,074 car thefts in the “San Diego Carlsbad San Marcos” area last year or one car stolen for every 943.71 people.
That gives Carlsbadistan a 33% share of the bronze medal in the car theft Olympics. Gold goes to Modesto, CA and Silver to Las Vegas/Paradise, NV.
The car most often stolen? The 1995 Honda Civic. Apparently, it parts out really well.

Bijan Plikat and Marianna Silva keeping it slow.
While most high school students are spending the summer speeding around in cars from one event to another, a group of Carlsbad High Schools students have decided to drive 55 in the right hand land and then to wave their hands out the window to encourage other drivers to slow down as well, according to a story in Today’s Local News.
After learning about how their counterparts in Europe deal with high fuel costs, many of the roughly 150 juniors and seniors in the foreign language classes have started a campaign to “slow down and save gas. . . “It’s taking responsibility for my own actions,” said Naomi Tirronen, who graduated last month. “I do need to save gas and money. If everyone didn’t buy gas as often, maybe demand would be lower and prices wouldn’t go up so high.”
Good luck, kids. Driving 55 mph on SoCal freeways probably makes you more of a hazard, especially if you’re distracting people with all that hand waving. But it’s a nice thought.

A new genetic test from Invitrogen that can gauge a patient’s response to a new breast cancer drug was approved by The Food and Drug Aministration today, according to a story on CNNMoney.com.
Herceptin was the first of a new class of cancer drugs which destroy cancer cells without also killing normal cells. It works by targeting the HER-2 gene, which encourages tumor growth. However, only about 20 percent of breast cancer patients have cancer caused by the gene. . . .The Spotlight HER2 CISH test from Invitrogen identifies which patients are likely to respond to Herceptin based on the amount of HER-2 gene in their tumors.
Invitrogen stock was up 72 cents on the news.
