All The NFL Rookies Are Here

by The Editors on July 1, 2008

Mcfadden IncludeOn Sunday June 29, 2008 the National Football League kicked off it’s 12th Annual Rookie Symposium right here in Carlsbad. That means that 252 new NFL players are in Carlsbadistan for four days to learn everything they can about what it means to be a professional football player.

On Monday the players will hear presentations on substance abuse (particularly steroid policy and awareness) and financial advice. Tuesday, the focus is a youth football clinic and player conduct. The symposium concludes Wednesday with a sex education guide (particularly an HIV overview) and life skills emphasis.

Sounds like helpful info. Hopefully, some of our kind Carlsbadistan manners will rub off on them. The conference ends tomorrow (July 2, 2008)

Reiley Makes Quarters At Pier Pressure

by The Editors on July 1, 2008

Reilly

Carlsbad Surfer Brent Reiley made it to the quarter finals of Nike 6.0’s 2008 Pier Pressure in Huntington Beach June 29-30, 2008. He was edged out by Australia’s Julian Wilson who went on to win the entire event, but that still leaves the Carlsbadistan ripper in 6th place on the ASP North America Pro Junior Tour.

Congrats, Brent.

My What Big Letters You Have

by The Editors on July 1, 2008

Cadsofcom-1

We mentioned the Cadillacs of Comedy a few weeks ago, but we had no idea how big they were getting. The letters on the marquee must be at least a foot tall.

You know what they say about comedians with big marquees. . . we’ll just let Don Friesen, Anthony Griffith, and Mark Anderson tell you next Friday or Saturday night at the Carlsbad Village Theatre, 2822 State St., Carlsbad. Tickets are $15. Call (760) 434-5922.

Today’s Local Schofield

by The Editors on June 30, 2008

Bre-1

Former Carlsbad High School surf team member and current top UCSD distance runners Bre Schofield got a little profile (and photo shown above) in yesterday’s Today’s Local News. The 19 year old seems to have an amazingly bright future ahead of her in track and field.

When she’s not at MiraCosta College for a summer philosophy class or online completing a geology course, Schofield spends most of her time preparing for a new challenge: the upcoming women’s cross country season. . . . “It’s not often that a college athlete gets to practice a new sport,” said the 5-foot-4, 115-pound Schofield, who blossomed as one of UCSD’s top track distance runners last season. “It’s something new not being on the track, so it’s going to be twice as exciting to see what I can do.”

Congrats, Bre. We hope training goes well and that you have time to surf every once in a while. Because nothing should get in the way of your surfing.

No Grace On New Cell Phone Law

by The Editors on June 30, 2008

While the O-side Police Department is giving residents a one-month grace period before enforcing the new “hands free cellphone law (California Vehicle Code 23123 and 23124)” that goes into effect tomorrow (July 1, 2008), Carlsbad officers are going to dive right in and begin handing out tickets right away, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain said his city’s officers will be given the same discretion in issuing tickets or warnings that they have with any other traffic violation.

So remember to keep those cellphones below the window when you’re texting your way down Coast Highway.

It was just another one of those perfect days at the beach that makes Carlsbadistan world famous. But then we’re a little bit biased, obviously.

CHS Surf Team Second in NSSA Champs

by The Editors on June 28, 2008

Leave it to a crew of “home-school” Hawai’ian kids from Elite Element to squeak by Carlsbad High School Surf Team in the finals of the NSSA National High School Surf Championships.

Elite Element — which is a home-school program — defeated Carlsbad (Calif.) High in the final. The finals were run in 3- to 4-foot waves at Lower Trestles.

Congrats, CHS. It’s a shame we can’t all live in Hawaii and go to school only when we don’t feel like surfing.

Javina Magness Makes It Through

by The Editors on June 28, 2008

Fullstage

She was sippin’ water and suckin’ throat lozenges most of the set, but that didn’t keep blues diva Javina Magness and her band from rocking the crowd all the way to the outfield at Stagecoach Park last night, for concert two of Carlsbad’s TGIF Jazz in The Park 2008.

We didn’t catch the first bit of Magness’ show because, as usual when we venture that far into Carlsbad’s Eastern Front, we got lost. From the looks on the faces of the packed baseball field everyone was enjoying Javina’s efforts.

The new baseball diamond venue may lack a little of the flavor of the old location, but it sure makes it easy for all the picnickers. And that new jumbo-sized dance floor seemed to be extremely popular.

Follow the jump for all the photos.

Carlsbad Apple Store: Inside The Black Box

by The Editors on June 27, 2008

ApplestorepqWe’ve been keeping tabs on the construction going on at The Forum Shopping Center in Carlsbad because it will soon be home to Apple’s newest retail store.

Right now it’s just a big black box. While we were hoping that this location would be open in time for the iPhone 3G launch on July 11, a sneak peek inside the store suggests that we’ll all be waiting a little longer than that.

Then again, who knows. Apple has worked magic in the past and we are talking about the launch of the Jesus Phone 3G with GPS. So anything is possible.
