Carlsbadistan Star Of High Gas Prices Story

by The Editors on June 4, 2008

2008-06-01T234145Z 01 Nootr Rtridsp 2 Business-Markets-Oil-Col-1When the Reuters new agency sent out their “rising oil price” wire story to the world they were kind enough to include a photo showing what many in the US consider outrageously high gas and diesel prices. That photo was taken in at our local Carlsbadistan Exxon station. Because we’re probably paying more for gas that everyone else in the nation.

No, we don’t consider it a blessing.

Same-Sex Couples Chomping At The Bit

by The Editors on June 4, 2008

If the California Supreme Court decision stands then on June 17, 2008 same-sex marriages licenses will be streaming out all over the state, according to a story in Today’s Local News. This comes as great news for a long-time Carlsbad couple.

Carlsbad residents Linda Sanders and Evelyn Thomas, who will celebrate their 18th year as a couple June 30, plan to get their marriage license in San Marcos on June 17. The couple plan to be among the first to wed under California’s new same-sex marriage ruling. . . . “We’re going to get our license the very first day they’ll let us,” Sanders said. “We figured that we should get it done right away because we know there’s going to be an effort to stop it.”

Eighteen years is long time to wait to make it legal. We guess we’ll see what happens. There are some pretty rich people against it.

by The Editors on June 3, 2008

Carlsbad based Case Financial, Inc. (which used to provide litigation funding to attorneys but as of February 2008 is “developing uranium claims in the State of Wyoming”) has signed an exploration agreement with Trio Gold Corp to provide $4 million dollars to explore 29 gold claims near Elko, Nevada.

According to Case Financial, Inc. CEO Michael Schaffer “The Carlin Trend is the most prolific gold area in North America and hosts as many as 30 gold producing mines and development projects, on which over 100 million ounces of gold production and inventory have been identified, including world class deposits such as Newmont Mining’s Carlin mine and Barrick Gold’s Meikle mine.”

At $882 an ounce, gold mines are looking better and better, aren’t they. Follow the jump for all the details.

Free Beer Money For Carlsbad College Students

by The Editors on June 3, 2008

Anheuser Busch BeerCarlsbadistan students who are planning on getting a post-secondary degree in hospitality and tourism management can apply with the Carlsbad Convention and Visitor Bureau for their chance to win one of three cash scholarships worth approximately $1,300.

These scholarships are a long time coming,” commented Kurt Burkhart, the bureau’s Executive Director. “Our desire has always been to do this in partnership, and we feel fortunate to have found a partner with the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and, to the best of our knowledge, we’ll be the first tourism bureau in San Diego County to directly award cash scholarships to students.”

With the cost of college these days, it looks like these scholarships could go a long way toward the average college student’s beer tab, at least for a quarter. Entries are due July 15, 2008. Follow the jump for all the details.

by The Editors on June 1, 2008

People began gathering at the Tamarack railroad crossing at 10:30 AM today as word spread through Carlsbadistan that an “old-time steam engine” was on it’s way down the track.

That steam engine was the historic exSanta Fe 3751 which pulled the last steam passenger train between Los Angeles and San Diego in 1953. It is currently owned by the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society.

This historic engine will be steaming back to Los Angeles today and is scheduled to leave the Santa Fe Station in downtown San Diego at 2:30 PM. Those interested in seeing it on its way north should be at the Carlsbad tracks between 3:10 and 3:40 PM.

City Fires Cannon Road Connection

by The Editors on May 30, 2008

Cannon280We’ve never wanted another direct connection between Oceanside/Vista and Carlsbadistan and now it looks like we’re safe for the foreseeable future as the City of Carlsbad has decided that finishing the Cannon Road connection would be too costly, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

We’ve always had that (Cannon Road) on the drawing board and all the (environmental) agencies have known about it, but based on what I’ve seen with the agencies, it’d be difficult to do,” Carlsbad Mayor Bud Lewis said.

Though the connection was apparently approved in 2002 at a cost of $14.5 million, now thanks to environmental hurdles and inflation it would be more in the $30 million according to Carlsbad City Engineer Bob Johnson.

All we can say is thank you, thank you, thank you for keeping Cannon closed.

Callaway Drags Its Balls To China

by The Editors on May 30, 2008

Carlsbad based Callaway Golf has announced that they are closing their 70,000-square-foot golfball manufacturing facility in Gloversville, NY on July 31 and laying off 120 workers as a way of taking “advantage of lower manufacturing and shipping costs in China,” according to a story in the Triangle Business Journal.

We have an obligation to our shareholders and employees to run as efficiently as possible,” said Michele Szynal, a Callaway spokeswoman. “This obviously makes financial sense for us.”

We think Michele meant a responsibility to Callaway’s remaining employees, as they don’t seem too bothered by cutting 120.

Koko Beach Lightens Up

by The Editors on May 29, 2008

Koko Beach

Koko Beach has been one of our long-time favorite late-night Carlsbadistan dining spots. There is nothing better than a Teriyaki Chicken (or Top Sirloin) dinner with a bowl of French Onion Soup, salad, and warm bread at 11:45 PM when you just don’t feel like anything else. And the lounge is a legendary secret spot for professional imbibers. That’s why we’re wondering what is up with the new windows. We can’t think of anything we do at Koko Beach that will be enhanced by more light, but then we’re sure it’s going to be better once we get used to it.
