Police are trying to track down a “white or Latino and in his late 50s, about 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build and dark hair that is gray at the temples” for at least one bank robbery in Carlsbad (The Old Codger) and a string of 14 robberies around the county.
In yesterday’s robbery, the man entered the Pacific Trust Bank on Bernardo Center Drive off Interstate 15 Monday at 11:05 a.m. He did not use or simulate a weapon and made off with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.
We’re guessing once you start walking into banks and asking for money and get it, it might be kind of hard to stop. This guy doesn’t even wear a disguise. . . or is that the disguise? If you’ve seen him call police at (619) 531-2299, the FBI at (858) 5651255 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS.

In a recent statewide CalAware survey of information access at local law enforcement agencies the Carlsbad Police Department scored 95 out of 100 to get the highest rating in North County, according to a story in the North County Times.
The Vista and San Marcos substations of the Sheriff’s Department both received scores of 62.5 and grades of D minus. . . . Oceanside police scored 72.5 for a grade of C minus, Escondido received an 88.5 for a B plus, and Carlsbad was awarded an A for coming in with a 95. . . Only Carlsbad police provided information without turning around and asking questions of the requester, the report states.
And we agree. Each time we’ve called the Carlsbad Police department for information we have found them amazingly helpful, friendly, and forthright. The San Diego Sheriff’s office, however, is a completely different story. They reportedly “reacted angrily” to the results of this survey, and have been little help. One call to the Encinitas substation regarding a man hit by a train in Carlsbad returned no information at all because they “didn’t have access to that information.”
Congratulations to Carlsbad’s finest and thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Jenny McCarthy, the former Playboy Playmate, best selling author, and autism activist, along with her five-year-old son Evan plugged in the power cord at Legoland last night to light the “world’s largest Lego holiday tree.”
The ceremony, which also featured Carlsbad Firefighters and Santa Claus, brought special meaning to more than 3,000 California families coping with autism as LEGOLAND California’s President and General Manager John Jakobsen presented $10,000 to Talk About Curing Autism (TACA).
Legolands’ Jakobsen also announced that beginning today they will be “offering all active fire and law enforcement with valid ID and up to three immediate family members a complimentary fun-filled day at LEGOLAND.” Season’s greetings.

If you’ve been cruising the Village lately and noticed that many of the shop windows have been painted up with colorful holiday scenes, you can thank Vista artist Alli Thoeni and The Carlsbad Village Business Association. According to a Barbara Henry story in the North County Times, Thoeni has already dressed up the front windows of 15 businesses.
It’s first stage of what the downtown merchant’s group is billing as its first full-scale, month-long holiday celebration. . . “We’re very excited,” said Robin Young, the association’s executive director. She said that she hoped some elements of the holiday schedule —- especially the extended shopping hours on Wednesdays —- become permanent.

The 65-year-old dam at Lake Calavera that nearly flooded the mobile home park at the Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course in January of 2005, and has “failed inspections by the state Division of Safety of Dams,” is getting a needed upgrade according to a story in the San Diego Union Tribune.
“Although they won’t have it all done by the start of the rainy season, we’re very pleased the city has finally gotten around to putting in the controls and controlling the level of the lake,” said Bill Arnold, president of Rancho Carlsbad’s homeowners association. . . “In 2005 the lake was already full, we got a couple inches of rain and had a near disaster,” Arnold said.
The total cost of the upgrades are being estimated at $6.1 million.

As much as we love Carlsbadistan, there are times when we’re not that sad to be away. One of those days is Black Friday (especially when there is no real surf). And the best place to NOT be is the mall.
Fox 6’s Antonio Castelan did a little live broadcasting from the No Fear store at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets to get the pulse of the mad Christmas shopping bonanza that began at midnight Friday morning. No Fear workers said their busiest time of the day so far was the midnight to 3 AM. Good, lord. People certainly are programmed to buy, buy, buy. We’re proud to say we didn’t buy one thing today. Did you?
