This Friday night (June 29) is Teen Late Night @ The Library (for 6th Grade and older). After the library closes a crew from the Rueben H. Fleet Science Center is going to do a hands-on experience about collecting evidence from a crime scene. It’s kind of like supervised cops and robbers. Advanced sign-up is required. And hopefully, it’s not too late. We never know with this stuff.

According to the San Diego Business Journal:
Upper Deck Co. had officially made a bid buy rival Topps Co. for about $425 million, a move that could undermine an attempt by former Walt Disney Co. head Michael Eisner to acquire the trading card company. . . Upper Deck, a Carlsbad-based trading card and sports entertainment publishing company said late Monday that its offer values Topps’s shares at $10.75 each and would expire on July 24.
This story is much more complicated that it seems as Upper Deck had to force Topps into considering it’s offer. And some are suggesting that Topps managment hadn’t told share holders that Eisner was planning on “retain existing management.” For more on those details check out this story from AZcentral.com.

There’s nothing like a write up in the local paper to help a high school grad get where she’s going. Carlsbad’s Miranda Hann, 18, got the full deal in the San Digeo Union Tribune when writer Leah Masterson broke it down for everyone.
Miranda Hann isn’t your typical teenager. . . Throughout her high school career, she spent weekends and summers volunteering for organizations that nurtured her love of science and her desire to enter the field of medicine. . . For three years, Hann volunteered every weekend in the Maternity Unit at Tri-City Medical Center.
Right on, Miranda.

According to the North County Time, a motocycle rider (possibly running with two others) crashed last night at 9:22 PM on Interstate 5 just south of Tamarack.
The CHP closed off the freeway at 9:30 p.m. during the investigation causing traffic to back up. . . Motorists called to report that three motorcycles were speeding on the freeway just prior to one rider crashing, he said. . . the rider was thrown from his motorcycle, which caught fire, Sanchez said. The rider was conscious and suspected of driving under the influence, he said.
We’re hoping he was wearing one of those annoying broom-head helmets, because they come in so handy for sweeping up after motorcycle accidents.

If things go as the Carlsbad Unified School District hopes the next five years will bring $223 million of improvements to district facilities including rebuilding Carlsbad High School, building a second high school, and upgrading six other schools.
Known as the facilities master plan, the 137-page document details $223 million in spending and provides construction options for each project, including costs and scheduling. The master plan includes some changes from previous district thinking. . . “The facilities master plan is not just another binder that will sit on my shelf,” school board President Kelly Moors said Tuesday. “It’s a working document that I will carry with me as I visit schools and talk to residents. It’s a step-by-step description of what will happen, and when, at each site.”
We’re looking forward to it. For all the details, click the link.

Today at 8:30 AM, in a water hazard on the second hole of La Costa Resort and Spa’s North Course an Environmental Waterworks worker who was cleaning the lake apparently fell into 3 feet of water and then disappeared. A co-worker who saw him alerted emergency crews and two other began immediately search for the man.
He was skimming the water’s surface to remove algae, leaves and debris, when he fell into deeper water. . . It appears his waders filled up with water and he drowned, said Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain. . . . Rescue divers found his body tangled in weeds about 12 feet underwater, said Battalion Chief Mike Kennedy of the Carlsbad Fire Department.
It was reportedly the man’s first day on the job. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Problem lots are where an architect’s genius can shine. And the lot at 4240 Hillside Dr. in Carlsbad is a problem. It’s at the bottom of a drainage and surrounded by tile-roofed pink houses (okay, salmon, to be fair). The lot rolls perpendicularly across a ravine that is taller on the Hillside Drive side that on the hill side side. It is a lot that the average home builder would take one look at and run away.

Two men died last year in a crash that their families believe was caused by Chinese tires failing on the van they were driving. And, on May 4 they sued the company that imported those tires. Now:
U.S. safety officials have ordered a New Jersey tire importer to recall as many as 450,000 tires that it bought from a Chinese manufacturer and sold to U.S. distributors. . . Foreign Tire Sales Inc., of Union, New Jersey, said an unknown number of the light truck radials it imported since 2002 from Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co., of Hangzhou, China, could suffer tread separation, a problem that led to the largest tire recall in the U.S. in 2000.
That’s where Carlsbad comes in. K&D Tire Wholesalers LLC, of 300 Carlsbad Village Dr #108A-134 Carlsbad was one of seven tire distributors that FTS sold to. The tires to watch out for include: Westlake, Compass, Telluride and YKS.

AT&T has finally released the details on the pricing structure for the Apple iPhone service plans. The iPhone will have three different pricing plans identical except for the minutes. All will have unlimited data, unlimited mobile-to-mobile, and a measly 200 SMS text messages (one of the reason’s we’ve always hated Cingular) included in their price. The plans are priced at $59.99, $79.99 and $99.99.
It’s obvious that Steve Jobs did not get his way when it came to bargaining on what or how AT&T would charge for their services. Sadly, the 200 free SMS max and no built-in iChat are pretty close to deal killers for us.

At a meeting this Wednesday (6 PM Carlsbad City Hall, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive) Carlsbad school board trustees will meet to discuss a proposed $80 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Problem is it’s about $1 million more than the schools have coming in.
Technically, it’s a deficit-spending budget,” said Walter Freeman, the district’s deputy superintendent of business services. However, Freeman said, the shortfall will be offset by $1.3 million is state grants the district received last year but plans to use this year to hire more high school counselors and buy art, science and physical education supplies.”
Might we suggest the “shortfall” be made up with bake sales and magazine subscription drives?
